Thinning and in-stream wood recruitment in riparian second growth forests in coastal Oregon and the use of buffers and tree tipping as mitigation

Many aquatic habitats in coastal Oregon have been impacted by historic land use practices that led to losses of in-stream wood and associated degraded fish habitats. Many of these streams are now bordered by stands of dense second growth forests（30–80 years） that are incorporated into riparian buffer zones with low wood recruitment and storage. Thinning in riparian zones is one management option to increase the rate of large tree growth and eventually larger in-stream wood, however, it raises concern about impacts on current wood recruitment, among other issues. Using a forest growth simulation model coupled to a model of in-stream wood recruitment, we explore riparian management alternatives in a Douglas-fir plantation in coastal Oregon. Alternatives included：（1） no treatment,（2） single and double entry thinning, without and with a 10-m buffer, and（3） thinning combined with mechanical introduction of some portion of the thinned trees into the stream（tree tipping）. Compared to no treatment, single and double entry thinning on one side of a channel, without a 10-m buffer, reduce cumulative instream wood volume by 33 and 42 %, respectively, after100 years（includes decay）. Maintaining a 10-m buffer reduces the in-stream wood loss to 7 %（single entry thin）and 11 %（double entry）. To completely offset the losses of in-stream wood in a single entry thin（on one or both sides of the stream）, in the absence or presence of a 10-m buffer,requires a 12–14 % rate of tree tipping. Relative to the notreatment alternative, cumulative in-stream wood storage can be increased up to 24 % in a double-entry thin with no buffer by tipping 15–20 % of the thinned trees（increased to 48 % if thinning and tipping simultaneously on both sides of the stream）. The predicted increases in in-stream wood that can occur during a thin with tree tipping may be effective for restoring fish habitat, particularly in aquatic systems that have poor habitat conditions and low levels of in-stream wood due to h

Dear editor,Penile fracture is an infrequent urologic emergency with a nationwide incidence of 1 in 100000 men in the United states.1 Blunt trauma during sexual intercourse(penile-perineal impact)is the primary cause of penile fracture,but a variety of alternative mechanisms of injury have been reported in the literature.2 The vast majority of penile fractures occur in the external corpus cavernosum and manifest with the classic“eggplant deformity.”The location of these fractures makes them amenable to repair through a circumcising,degloving incision.

The Tongariro Power Development scheme（TPDs） is used to regulate flow in the headwaters of the largest catchment on the North Island of New Zealand（the Waikato）.Two small dams,the Rangipo Dam and the Poutu Intake Dam,were constructed in 1973 and *** flow regime of the river is managed to divert freshes into the power scheme,but allows flows larger than 100 m;s;to be released,to rework and transport sediment through the catchment. In this paper, non-equilibrium ignition conditions for magnetized cylindrical deuterium–tritium plasma in the presence of an axial magnetic field have been investigated. It is expected that temperature imbalance between ions and electrons as well as the axial magnetic field will relax the threshold of ignition ***, ignition conditions for this model are derived numerically involving the energy balance equation at the stagnation point. It has been derived using parametric space including electron and ion temperature(T_e, T_i), areal density(q R), and seed magnetic field-dependent free parameters of B/q, mB, and BR. For B/ρ e minimum fuel areal density exceeds between ρR >0.002 g cm^(-2), ρR> 0.25 g cm^(-2), and ρR > 0.02 g cm^(-2),respectively. The practical equilibrium conditions also addressed which is in good agreement with the corresponding one-temperature magnetized mode proposed in previous studies. Moreover, it has been shown that the typical criterion of BR ≥(6.13–4.64) × 10~5 G cm would be expectable. It is also confirmed that the minimum product of areal density times fuel temperature in equilibrium model is located in the range of T = 6–8 keV for all these free parameters, depending on the magnitude of the magnetic field. This is the entry point for the non-equilibrium model consistent with equilibrium model.

Frequency response analysis of the liquid-filled pipeline is an important way to obtain the dynamic behavior of piping systems subjected to internal/external excitations. This study applies Laplace transform to hyperbolic partial differential equations which describes the axial motion taking into account Fluid structure Interaction (FsI). An effective and convenient method to tackle frequency analysis and to pick up resonance frequencies of the system was developed, four wave modes in the frequency domain being used in combination of solution. The efficiency of this method is well proved with the examples.

An experimental investigation were performed on the effect of the impulse electron-beam irradiation upon microstruc-ture of the surface layer and on wear resistance of a cutting tool for sintered TiC/NiCr cermet. The results showed that the surface electron-beam treatment of the TiC/NiCr cermet is an efficient method for investigating the mi-crostructure and phase composition in the surface layer of the powder composite and there are optimal regimes of electron-beam treatment, which ensure a substantial increase in the resistance of the cermet to wear during cutting of metals.
