Cigarette butts(CBs)are one of the most common types of litter in the *** to the toxic substances they contain,the waste generated poses a harmful risk to the environment,and therefore there is an urgent need for alternative solutions to landfill ***,this work presents a possible revalorization of this waste material,which implies interesting environmental *** were used as sacrificial templates for the preparation of CaO-based materials by impregnation with calcium and magnesium nitrates followed by flaming *** materials presented enhanced porosity for their use in the Calcium Looping process applied either to thermochemical energy storage or CO_(2)capture *** influence of the concentration of Ca and Mg in the impregnating solutions on the multicycle reactivity of the samples was *** improved multicycle performance was obtained in terms of conversion for both applications.

The climatic variability hypothesis(CVH)predicts that organisms in more thermally variable environments have wider thermal breadths and higher thermal plasticity than those from more stable ***,due to evolutionary trade-offs,taxa with greater absolute thermal limits may have little plasticity of such limits(trade-off hypothesis).The CVH assumes that climatic variability is the ultimate driver of thermal tolerance variation across latitudinal and altitudinal gradients,but average temperature also varies along such *** explored intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance in three typical Mediterranean saline water beetles(families Hydrophilidae and Dytiscidae).For each species,we compared two populations where the species coexist,with similar annual mean temperature but contrasting thermal variability(continental *** population).We estimated thermal limits of adults from each population,previously acclimated at 17,20,or 25℃.We found species-specific patterns but overall,our results agree with the CVH regarding thermal ranges,which were wider in the continental(more variable)*** the two hydrophilid species,this came at the cost of losing plasticity of the upper thermal limit in this population,supporting the trade-off hypothesis,but not in the dytiscid *** results support the role of local adaptation to thermal variability and trade-offs between basal tolerance and physiological plasticity in shaping thermal tolerance in aquatic ectotherms,but also suggest that intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance does not fit a general pattern among aquatic *** such intraspecific variation could lead to inaccurate predictions of the vulnerability of aquatic insects to global warming.

since indoor clothing insulation is a key element in thermal comfort models,the aim of the present study is proposing an approach for predicting it,which could assist the occupants of a building in terms of recommendations regarding their *** that,a systematic analysis of input variables is exposed,and 13 regression and 12 classification machine learning algorithms were developed and *** results are based on data from 3352 questionnaires and 21 input variables from a field study in mixed-mode office buildings in *** temperature at 6 a.m.,indoor air temperature,indoor relative humidity,comfort temperature and gender were the most relevant features for predicting clothing *** comparing machine learning algorithms,decision tree-based algorithms with Boosting techniques achieved the best *** proposed model provides an efficient method for forecasting the clothing insulation level and its application would entail optimising thermal comfort and energy efficiency.

Cold spells and severe weather may have detrimental effects in wild birds,but owing to the stochastic nature of these events,it is not always possible to measure their *** January 2021,a strong snowstorm known as‘Filomena’affected spain,mainly the region of Madrid(Central spain),which was fully covered with snow and suffered freezing temperatures for a *** bird surveys conducted in the winter-spring of 2020 and 2021(before and after Filomena)at same locations,we addressed the possible impact of the cold spell in three widespread gamebirds:Wood Pigeon(Columba palumbus),eurasian Magpie(Pica pica)and Red-legged Partridge(Alectoris rufa).No significant abundance differences were found between years for none of the species and hunting pressure was only significantly reduced for Partridges,hence this species may have been negatively affected by *** suggest that in response to Filomena,Pigeons conducted partial migration in search of better conditions,while Magpies aggregated in certain areas of Madrid and Partridges endured the harsh conditions within their home *** results highlight the importance to alleviate negative impacts of extreme weather events in wild birds through management actions,especially for sedentary species.

ethanol has emerged as a promising alternative to fossil fuels,but its use can lead to significant dilution in lubricants,particularly during cold start or heavy *** dilution can affect the performance of additives,including friction modifiers like molybdenum dithiocarbamate(MoDTC),which are designed to reduce friction under extreme contact *** research suggests that ethanol may impact the performance of MoDTC,prompting this study’s goal to investigate the effects of ethanol on MoDTC tribofilms and their friction response under boundary lubrication ***,reciprocating tribological tests were performed with fully formulated lubricants containing MoDTC with varying ethanol *** results indicate that a critical ethanol dilution level inhibits friction reduction by MoDTC activation,resulting in friction coefficients(COFs)similar to the base *** tested with simple mixtures of polyalphaolefin(PAO)+MoDTC showed increased COFs with added *** of tested surfaces using Raman spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPs),and X-ray absorption spectroscopy near the edge structure(XANes)revealed the presence of sulfates,MoO_(3),Mos_(2),and Mos_(x)O_(y)compounds in the tribofilms formed on the surfaces,with and without ethanol diluted in the ***,the addition of ethanol increased the sulfates and MoO_(3)content of the tribofilms at the expense of friction-reducing compounds such as Mos_(2)and Mos_(x)O_(y).These findings suggest that ethanol dilution in lubricants containing MoDTC creates an oxygen-rich interfacial medium that favors the formation of compounds with insufficient friction-reducing capabilities.

Phase change materials(PCMs) designate materials able to store latent *** change state from solid to liquid over a defined temperature *** process is reversible and can be used for thermo-technical *** present paper aims to study the thermal performance of an inorganic eutectic PCM integrated into the rooftop slab of a test room and analyze its potential for building thermal *** experiment is conducted in two test rooms in Antofagasta(Chile) during summer,fall,and *** PCM is integrated into the rooftop of the first test room,while the roof panel of the second room is a sealed air *** work introduces a numerical model,which is built using the finite difference method and used to simulate the rooms' thermal *** thermal simulations of the PCM room are performed for other Chilean locations to evaluate and compare the capability of the PCM panel to store latent heat thermal energy in different *** show that the indoor temperature of the PCM room in Antofagasta varies only 21.1℃±10.6℃,while the one of the air-panel room varies 28.3℃±18.5℃.Under the experiment's conditions,the PCM room's indoor temperature observes smoother diurnal fluctuations,with lower maximum and higher minimum indoor temperatures than that of the air-panel *** simulations in other cities show that the PCM panel has a better thermal performance during winter,as it helps to maintain or increase the room temperature by some degrees to reach comfort *** demonstrates that the implementation of such PCM in the building envelope can effectively reduce space heating and cooling needs,and improve indoor thermal comfort in different climates of Chile.

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of inertia of nonlinear springs on the dispersion behavior of discrete monoatomic chains with lumped and distributed *** developed model can represent the wave propagation problem in a non-homogeneous material consisting of heavy inclusions embedded in a *** inclusions are idealized by lumped masses,and the matrix between adjacent inclusions is modeled by a nonlinear spring with distributed ***,the model is capable of depicting the wave propagation in bi-material bars,wherein the first material is represented by a rigid particle and the second one is represented by a nonlinear spring with distributed *** discrete model of the nonlinear monoatomic chain with lumped and distributed masses is first considered,and a closed-form expression of the dispersion relation is obtained by the second-order Lindstedt-Poincare method(LPM).Next,a continuum model for the nonlinear monoatomic chain is derived directly from its discrete lattice model by a suitable continualization *** subsequent use of the second-order method of multiple scales(MMs)facilitates the derivation of the corresponding nonlinear dispersion relation in a closed *** novelties of the present study consist of(i)considering the inertia of nonlinear springs on the dispersion behavior of the discrete mass-spring chains;(ii)developing the second-order LPM for the wave propagation in the discrete chains;and(iii)deriving a continuum model for the nonlinear monoatomic chains with lumped and distributed ***,a parametric study is conducted to examine the effects of the design parameters and the distributed spring mass on the nonlinear dispersion relations and phase velocities obtained from both the discrete and continuum *** parameters include the ratio of the spring mass to the lumped mass,the nonlinear stiffness coefficient of the spring,and the wave amplitude.
