Influenza pandemics are unpredictable recurrent events with global he.lth,economic,and social consequences.The objective of this review is to provide an update on the.latest developments in early diagnosis and specific treatment of the disease and its complications,particularly with regard to respiratory organ failure.Despite advances in treatment,the rate of mortality in the intensive care unit remains approximately 30%.Therefore,early identification of potentially severe viral pneumonia is extremely important to optimize treatment in these patients.The pathogenesis of influenza virus infection depends on viral virulence and host response.Thus,in some patients,it is associated with an excessive systemic response mediated by an authentic cytokine storm.This process leads to severe primary pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome.Initial prognostication in the emergency department based on comorbidities,vital signs,and biomarkers(e.g.,procalcitonin,ferritin,human leukocyte antigen-DR,mid-regional proadrenomedullin,and lactate)is important.Identification of these biomarkers on admission may facilitate clinical decision-making to determine early admission to the hospital or the intensive care unit.These decisions are reached considering pathophysiological circumstances that are associated with a poor prognosis(e.g.,bacterial co-infection,hyperinflammation,immune paralysis,severe endothelial damage,organ dysfunction,and septic shock).Moreover,early implementation is important to increase treatment efficacy.Based on a limited level of evidence,all current guidelines recommend using oseltamivir in this setting.The possibility of drug resistance should also be considered.Alternative options include other antiviral drugs and combination therapies with monoclonal antibodies.Importantly,it is not recommended to use corticosteroids in the initial treatment of these patients.Furthermore,the implementation of supportive measures for respiratory failure is essential.Current recommendations are.limited,heterogeneous,an

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be associated with various skin manifestations. Among them, figurate erythema (Fe) is rare; only a few clinical reports have been published.Case presentation: A 52-year-old woman was diagnosed with COVID-19. One month later, she developed asymptomatic annular erythematous concentric ring lesions on her inner right thigh. The margin of every ring increased in coloration, and the.lesions then completely resolved in 2 weeks. A biopsy reve.led vasculitis of small vessels, an increase in the fluorescence intensity of CD3 and CD45, and negativity for COVID-19 RNA.Discussion: The results showed an unusual Fe that has a clinical mixed type between erythema annulare centrifugum and erythema gyratum repens; the physiopathological mechanism in the Fe due to COVID-19 is unknown; one theory involves rapid viral passage into the cutaneous vascular system that triggers an immune and inflammatory response. Although the results exhibited a negative COVID-19 RNA in the tissue, the CD3+/CD45+ lymphocyte infiltration could explain the clinical pattern as a direct inflammatory response in the small vessel or as a delayed immune response.Conclusion: Our findings suggest an immunohistochemical small vessel vasculitis pattern with an unusual clinical Fe that differs from other types of COVID-19–associated Fe or erythema reported previously.

Neoadjuvant treatment of rectal cancer: Where we are and where we are going

locally advanced rectal cancer requires a multidisciplinary approach based on total neoadjuvant treatment with radiotherapy(RT)and chemotherapy(ChT),followed by deferred surgery.Currently,alternatives to the standard total neoadjuvant therapy(TNT)are being explored,such as new ChT regimens or the introduction of immunotherapy.With standard TNT,up to a third of patients may achieve a complete pathological response(CPR),potentially avoiding surgery.However,as of now,we.lack predictive markers of response that would allow us to define criteria for a conservative organ strategy.The presence of muta-tions,genes,or new imaging tests is helping to define these criteria.An example of this is the diffusion coefficient in the diffusion-weighted sequence of magnetic resonance imaging and the integration of this imaging technique into RT treatment.This allows for the monitoring of the evolution of this coefficient over successive RT sessions,helping to determine which patients will achieve CPR or those who may require intensification of neoadjuvant therapy.

Introduction The Gram-positive bacterium,Streptococcus pneumoniae(S.pneumoniae),often colonizes the nasopharynx;however,it is one of the major microorganisms that cause pneumonia and meningitis.[[1],[2],[3]]It presents several virulence factors,such as surface proteins and enzymes,pneumolysin toxin,and a polysaccharide capsule,which is mainly responsible for the immune response;the capsule also facilitates classification of the bacterium into several serotypes.[1,2]In vulnerable individuals,the bacterium may lead to the development of invasive pneumococcal disease(IPD),which is defined as an infection of normally sterile.locations.

early postnatal stimulation,e.g.,neonatal handling(NH)in its most frequent form,and environmental enrichment(ee,the exposure of juvenile animals,usually during several weeks,to environments involving rich and variable sensory stimulation)produce profound and long-lasting behavioral and neurobiological effects.Both treatments reduce anxiety and stress sensitivity,and improve neurodevelopment and learning/memory in unconditioned and conditioned tasks in laboratory rodents.

The brain is,after the adipose tissue,the organ with the greatest amount of lipids and diversity in their composition in the human body.In neurons,lipids are involved in signaling pathways controlling autophagy,a lysosome-dependent catabolic process essential for the maintenance of neuronal homeostasis and the function of the primary cilium,a ce.lular antenna that acts as a communication hub that transfers extrace.lular signals into intrace.lular responses required for neurogenesis and brain development.A crosstalk between primary cilia and autophagy has been established;however,its role in the control of neuronal activity and homeostasis is barely known.In this review,we brie.ly discuss the current knowledge regarding the role of autophagy and the primary cilium in neurons.Then we review the recent literature about specific lipid subclasses in the regulation of autophagy,in the control of primary cilium structure and its dependent ce.lular signaling in physiological and pathological conditions,specifically focusing on neurons,an area of research that could have major implications in neurodevelopment,energy homeostasis,and neurodegeneration.

living in a Condominium Regime:Neighborhood Conflicts in low-Income Housing,Tijuana,Baja California-A Secondary Publication

This paper analyzes neighborhood conflicts arising from the condominium property regime,under which social housing promoted by Mexican government institutions and private developers is acquired.This regime has facilitated access to housing for the salaried population,but it is far from contributing to the attainment of the right to housing.The research takes as case studies housing complexes located in the city of Tijuana,Baja California,Mexico.The analysis included a mixed methodology.Firstly,similar case studies were analyzed;secondly,a review of the Condominium Property Regime.law was carried out in order to understand its implications.In view of the pandemic situation,a virtual survey was applied to the inhabitants of these areas,as we.l as interviews with presidents of neighborhood committees of these complexes.From the above,it was found that this form of ownership generates conflicts,re.lected in the dissatisfaction of the inhabitants with their housing,disagreements and controversies in their organization and coexistence.The inhabitants have to collectively solve the problems they face,related to the maintenance and use of common areas,insecurity,and cleanliness,among others.In addition,there is a lack of support from local authorities.With this,it is concluded that although the inhabitants have a space that solves their housing problem,it does not manage to be a space that adequately guarantees their right to housing.

为探究稀土离子掺杂对Ca_(3)Ti_(2)O_(7)物理性能的调控,采用固相反应法制备了Sm^(3+)掺杂的(Ca_(1-x)Sm_(x))_(3)Ti_(2)O_(7)(x=0,0.02,0.04)陶瓷样品,通过XRD、XPS、紫外-可见光吸收光谱以及第一性原理计算等方法对样品的晶体结构、光学性能、电学性能和磁学性能进行分析.结果表明:随着Sm^(3+)含量的增加,(Ca_(1-x)Sm_(x))_(3)Ti_(2)O_(7)的晶胞参数逐渐增大.Sm^(3+)掺杂导致氧空位减少,因此样品的漏电流随着Sm^(3+)掺杂量的增加而减小.同时,随着Sm^(3+)掺杂量的增加,样品的光学带隙呈现增大趋势.此外,第一性原理研究表明,Sm^(3+)掺杂可在体系中诱导出磁性能,进一步丰富了该材料的物理性能.

Background:Metabolomic approaches,which include the study of low molecular weight molecules,are an emerging-omics technology useful for identification of biomarkers.In this field,nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy has already been used to uncover(in)fertility biomarkers in the seminal plasma(SP)of several mammalian species.However,NMR studies profiling the porcine SP metabolome to uncover in vivo fertility biomarkers are yet to be carried out.Thus,this study aimed to evaluate the putative relationship between SPmetabolites and in vivo fertility outcomes.To this end,24 entire ejaculates(three ejaculates per boar)were collected from artificial insemination(AI)-boars throughout a year(one ejaculate every 4 months).Immediately after collection,ejaculates were centrifuged to obtain SP-samples,which were stored for subsequent metabolomic analysis by NMR spectroscopy.Fertility outcomes from 1525 inseminations were recorded over a year,including farrowing rate.litter size,stillbirths per litter and the duration of pregnancy.Results:A total of 24 metabolites were identified and quantified in all SP-samples.Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis showed that lactate.levels in SP had discriminative capacity for farrowing rate(area under the curve[AUC]=0.764)while carnitine(AUC=0.847),hypotaurine(AUC=0.819),sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine(AUC=0.833),glutamate(AUC=0.799)and glucose(AUC=0.750)showed it for litter size.Similarly,citrate(AUC=0.743),creatine(AUC=0.812),phenylalanine(AUC=0.750),tyrosine(AUC=0.753)and malonate(AUC=0.868)levels had discriminative capacity for stillbirths per litter;and malonate(AUC=0.767)and fumarate(AUC=0.868)levels for gestation length.Conclusions:The assessment of selected SP-metabolites in ejaculates through NMR spectroscopy could be considered as a promising non-invasive tool to predict in vivo fertility outcomes in pigs.Moreover,supplementing AI-doses with specific metabolites should also be envisaged as a way to improve their fertility potential.

electrobiocorrosion by microbes without outer-surface cytochromes

Anaerobic microbial corrosion of iron-containing metals causes extensive economic damage.Some microbes are capable of direct metal-to-microbe electron transfer(electrobiocorrosion),but the prevalence of electrobiocorrosion among diverse methanogens and acetogens is poorly understood because of a lack of tools for their genetic manipulation.Previous studies have suggested that respiration with 316l stainless ste.l as the electron donor is indicative of electrobiocorrosion,because,unlike pure Fe^(0),316l stainless ste.l does not abiotically generate H2 as an intermediary electron carrier.Here,we report that all of the methanogens(Methanosarcina vacuolata,Methanothrix soehngenii,and Methanobacterium strain IM1)and acetogens(Sporomusa ovata and Clostridium ljungdahli)evaluated respired with pure Fe^(0)as the electron donor,but only M.vacuolata,Mx.soehngeni,and S.ovata were capable of stainless ste.l electrobiocorrosion.The electrobiocorrosive methanogens re-quired acetate as an additional energy source in order to produce methane from stainless ste.l.Cocultures of S.ovata and Mx.soehngeni demonstrated how acetogens can provide acetate to methanogens during corrosion.Not only was Meth-anobacterium strain IM1 not capable of electrobiocorrosion,but it also did not accept electrons from Geobacter metal-lireducens,an effective electron-donating partner for direct interspecies electron transfer to all methanogens that can directly accept electrons from Fe^(0).The finding that M.vacuolata,Mx.soehngeni,and S.ovata are capable of electrobiocorrosion,despite a lack of the outer-surface c-type cytochromes previously found to be important in other electrobiocorrosive microbes,demonstrates that there are multiple microbial strategies for making electrical contact with Fe^(0).
