Prey species may have their own optimal escape strategy to balance predation risks and the energetic cost of fleeing.Some species have an advantage when maintaining a short fleeing distance,while others may favour an earlier escape based on microhabitat,size,or body condition.Here,we examined the escape behaviour of the three syntopic Northeast Asian anuran species:Mongolian toads(Strauchbufo raddei),Amur brown frogs(Rana amurensis),and Japanese treefrogs(Dryophytes japonicus)in Mongolia,Russia,China and DPR Korea.We examined flight initiation distance(FID;the distance from a potential predator to the point when the individual starts to flee)and distance fled(DF;distance between flight initiation and flight termination points)of each species and the effects of microhabitat,sex,and body size.Strauchbufo raddei and R.amurensis had a longer FID than D.japonicus,and S.raddei also had a longer DF than D.japonicus.These trends remained similar when dividing FID and DF by a size proxy(snout-vent length)for all individuals.This suggests that the treefrog D.japonicus used a strategy to stay immobile even when they were detected,and the toad S.raddei reacted quicker and more sensitively to predators despite the presence of toxin.Female S.raddei had a significantly longer FID than males suggesting that females are more sensitive to predation risk in this species,but body size was not significant for any of the three species.Our results indicate that the three sympatric species have different escaping strategies,likely related to differences in physiology and crypticity.

Barosinusitis due to routine weather changes:A cross-sectional analysis of public websites

Background:Sinusitis is a common diagnosis that can be erroneously associated with routine weather‐related barometric pressure changes.In actuality,these pressure changes likely exacerbate migraine headaches,which can cause facial pain and pressure rather than true sinus inflammation.Objective:The present study sought to characterize the representation of both sinusitis and migraine in association with barometric pressure changes across websites on the Internet.Methods:An Internet search for relevant terms was conducted,and content of the resulting pages was assessed for associations between weather‐related pressure changes and either sinusitis or migraine.Variations in reported results across different subtypes of Internet sources were analyzed.The primary outcomes measured were(1)whether a given media source associated barometric weather changes with sinusitis,(2)whether that source associated barometric weather changes with migraine,and(3)treatment options offered by that source.Results:Of the 116 included webpages,36(31.03%)associated sinusitis and routine barometric pressure changes.Of these,10(27.77%)were otolaryngology practice sites.Sixty‐seven webpages(57.76%)associated migraine and routine barometric pressure changes.Of these,nonotolaryngology webpages were more likely to report this link.Conclusions:Otolaryngology practice sites were observed to be the most frequent professional medical resource reporting the unsubstantiated claim that routine barometric pressure changes are associated with sinusitis.Nonotolaryngology sources were more likely to link weather‐related pressure changes to migraine.These results suggest that opportunities exist for otolaryngology practice sites to educate patients about nonrhinogenic headache etiologies.

Laser‑Induced and MOF‑Derived Metal Oxide/Carbon Composite for Synergistically Improved ethanol Sensing at Room temperature

Advancements in sensor technology have significantly enhanced atmospheric monitoring.Notably,metal oxide and carbon(MO_(x)/C)hybrids have gained attention for their exceptional sensitivity and room-temperature sensing performance.However,previous methods of synthesizing MO_(x)/C composites suffer from problems,including inhomogeneity,aggregation,and challenges in micropatterning.Herein,we introduce a refined method that employs a metal–organic framework(MOF)as a precursor combined with direct laser writing.The inherent structure of MOFs ensures a uniform distribution of metal ions and organic linkers,yielding homogeneous MO_(x)/C structures.The laser processing facilitates precise micropatterning(e to typical photolithography)of the MO_(x)/C crystals.The optimized MOF-derived MO_(x)/C sensor rapidly detected ethanol gas even at room temperature(105 and 18 s for response and recovery,respectively),with a broad range of sensing performance from 170 to 3,400 ppm and a high response value of up to 3,500%.Additionally,this sensor exhibited enhanced stability and thermal resilience compared to previous MOF-based counterparts.This research opens up promising avenues for practical applications in MOF-derived sensing devices.

enhancing BiVO_(4)photoanode performance by insertion of an epitaxial BiFeO_(3)ferroelectric layer

BiVO_(4)(BVO)is a promising material as the photoanode for use in photoelectrochemical applications.However,the high charge recombination and slow charge transfer of the BVO have been obstacles to achieving satisfactory photoelectrochemical performance.To address this,various modifications have been attempted,including the use of ferroelectric materials.Ferroelectric materials can form a permanent polarization within the layer,enhancing the separation and transport of photo-excited electron-hole pairs.In this study,we propose a novel approach by depositing an epitaxial BiFeO_(3)(BFO)thin film underneath the BVO thin film(BVO/BFO)to harness the ferroelectric property of BFO.The self-polarization of the inserted BFO thin film simultaneously functions as a buffer layer to enhance charge transport and a hole-blocking layer to reduce charge recombination.As a result,the BVO/BFO photoanodes showed more than 3.5 times higher photocurrent density(0.65 mA cm^(-2))at 1.23 V_(RHe)under the illumination compared to the bare BVO photoanodes(0.18 m A cm^(-2)),which is consistent with the increase of the applied bias photon-to-current conversion efficiencies(ABPe)and the result of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(eIS)analysis.These results can be attributed to the self-polarization exhibited by the inserted BFO thin film,which promoted the charge separation and transfer efficiency of the BVO photoanodes.

Reconstruction of cervical necrotizing fasciitis defect with the modified keystone flap technique:Two case reports

BACKGROUND Cervical necrotizing fasciitis(CNF)is a rare,aggressive form of deep neck space infection with significant morbidity and mortality rates.Serial surgical debridement acts as the cornerstone of CNF treatment;however,it often results in defects requiring complex reconstructions.CASe SUMMARY We report two cases in which the keystone flap(KF)was used for CNF defect coverage:Case 1,an 85-year-old patient with CNF in the anterior neck,and Case 2,a 54-year-old patient with CNF in the posterior neck.Both patients received empirical intravenous antibiotic therapy and underwent serial debridement,enabling adequate wound preparation and stabilization.The final defect size measured 5.5 cm×12 cm in Case 1 and 6 cm×11 cm in Case 2.For defect coverage,we employed an 8 cm×19 cm type II KF based on perforators from the superior thyroid artery in Case 1 and a 9 cm×18 cm type II KF based on perforators from the transverse cervical artery in Case 2.Both flaps showed complete survival.No postoperative complications occurred in both cases,and favorable outcomes were observed at 7-and 6-month follow-ups in case 1 and 2,respectively.CONCLUSION We effectively treated CNF-associated defects using the KF technique;KF is viable for covering CNF defects in carefully selected cases.

Two-dimensional magnetic materials for spintronic applications

Spintronic devices are driving new paradigms of bio-inspired,energy efficient computation like neuromorphic stochastic computing and in-memory computing.They have also emerged as key candidates for non-volatile memories for embedded systems as well as alternatives to persistent memories.To meet the growing demands from such diverse applications,there is need for innovation in materials and device designs which can be scaled and adapted according to the application.Two-dimensional(2D)magnetic materials address challenges facing bulk magnet systems by offering scalability while maintaining device integrity and allowing efficient control of magnetism.In this review,we highlight the progress made in experimental studies on 2D magnetic materials towards their integration into spintronic devices.We provide an account of the various relevant material discoveries,demonstrations of current and voltage-based control of magnetism and reported device systems,while also discussing the challenges and opportunities towards integration of 2D magnetic materials in commercial spintronic devices.

Acoustofluidic separation of prolate and spherical micro-objects

Most microfluidic separation techniques rely largely on object size as a separation marker.The ability to separate micro-objects based on their shape is crucial in various biomedical and chemical assays.Here,we develop an ondemand,label-free acoustofluidic method to separate prolate ellipsoids from spherical microparticles based on traveling surface acoustic wave-induced acoustic radiation force and torque.The freely rotating non-spherical microobjects were aligned under the progressive acoustic field by the counterrotating radiation torque,and the major axis of the prolate ellipsoids was parallel to the progressive wave propagation.The specific alignment of the ellipsoidal particles resulted in a reduction in the cross-sectional area perpendicular to the wave propagation.As a consequence,the acoustic backscattering decreased,resulting in a decreased magnitude of the radiation force.Through the variation in radiation force,which depended on the micro-object morphology enabled the acoustofluidic shape-based separation.We conducted numerical simulations for the wave scattering of spherical and prolate objects to elucidate the working mechanism underlying the proposed method.A series of experiments with polystyrene microspheres,prolate ellipsoids,and peanut-shaped microparticles were performed for validation.Through quantitative analysis of the separation efficiency,we confirmed the high purity and high recovery rate of the proposed acoustofluidic shapebased separation of micro-objects.As a bioparticle,we utilize Thalassiosira eccentrica to perform shape-based separation,as the species has a variety of potential applications in drug delivery,biosensing,nanofabrication,bioencapsulation and immunoisolation.

Programmable directional color dynamics using plasmonics

Adaptive multicolor filters have emerged as key components for ensuring color accuracy and resolution in outdoor visual devices.However,the current state of this technology is still in its infancy and largely reliant on liquid crystal devices that require high voltage and bulky structural designs.Here,we present a multicolor nanofilter consisting of multilayered‘active’plasmonic nanocomposites,wherein metallic nanoparticles are embedded within a conductive polymer nanofilm.These nanocomposites are fabricated with a total thickness below 100 nm using a‘lithography-free’method at the wafer level,and they inherently exhibit three prominent optical modes,accompanying scattering phenomena that produce distinct dichroic reflection and transmission colors.Here,a pivotal achievement is that all these colors are electrically manipulated with an applied external voltage of less than 1 V with 3.5 s of switching speed,encompassing the entire visible spectrum.Furthermore,this electrically programmable multicolor function enables the effective and dynamic modulation of the color temperature of white light across the warm-to-cool spectrum(3250 K-6250 K).This transformative capability is exceptionally valuable for enhancing the performance of outdoor optical devices that are independent of factors such as the sun’s elevation and prevailing weather conditions.

In this review,we discuss the electrochemical properties of Prussian blue(PB)for Na^(+)storage by combining structural engineering and electrolyte modifications.We integrated experimental data and density functional theory(DFT)in sodium-ion battery(SIB)research to refine the atomic arrangements and crystal lattices and introduce substitutions and dopants.These changes affect the lattice stability,intercalation,electronic and ionic conductivities,and electrochemical performance.We unraveled the intricate structure-electrochemical behavior relationship by combining experimental data with computational models,including first-principles calculations.This holistic approach identified techniques for optimizing PB and Prussian blue analog(PBA)structu ral properties for SIBs.We also discuss the tuning of electrolytes by systematically adjusting their composition,concentration,and additives using a combination of molecular dynamics(MD)simulations and DFT computations.Our review offers a comprehensive assessment of strategies for enhancing the electrochemical properties of PB and PBAs through structural engineering and electrolyte modifications,combining experimental insights with advanced computational simulations,and paving the way for next-generation energy storage systems.
