This study sought to contribute to an improved understanding of soil erosion and redistribution on Mediterranean agricultural land, where traditional soil conservation practices have been applied over millennia to provide effective protection of cultivated land. The study was undertaken in the Na Borges catchment, a groundwater-dominated lowland limestone basin (319 km2), located in the northeastern part of Mallorca, Spain. The average sediment yield from the basin, based on river sediment load data, is e 137Cs technique was used to quantify soil redistribution rates over the past 40 years and to identify the key factors involved in soil erosion and redistribution processes. To estimate erosion and deposition rates and to elucidate the main factors affecting soil redistribution, samples were collected from six slope transects representative of the local land use and slope gradients and the presence or absence of soil conservation practices. A mass balance and a profile distribution conversion model were used for cultivated areas and areas of natural vegetation, respectively, to derive point estimates of the soil redistribution rates from the 137Cs inventories measured for individual soil bulk cores. In areas without soil conservation practices, the estimated mean soil erosion rates ranged from 12.7 to 26.4 t/ha·yr, which correspond to the slight and moderate erosion classes. The erosivity of Mediterranean climatic conditions combined with the influence of agricultural practices and slope gradient on soil erosion, represent the main factors responsible for the variation of soil losses documented for the cultivated land located in downslope areas, in the absence of soil conservation practices. The kinetics of the sorption of Cd^2＋ and CF^3＋ from aqueous solutions by mercaptoacetic acid modified and unmodified oil palm fruit fibre adsorbents were investigated. The results indicate that sorption equilibrium was reached within 60 min for both metals. Also, the removal efficiency of the three adsorbents was observed to increase for both metals with stronger treatments with mercaptoacetic acid. This may be attributed to the influence of the thiolation of the adsorbents. Furthermore, Cr^3＋ had higher removal percentages than Cd^2＋ for all the adsorbents. The sorption mechanism based on the intraparticle diffusion model shows that Cd^2＋ sorption is better described than Cr^3＋. The intraparticle diffusion rate constants, Kid, for Cd^2＋ are 62.04 min^-1 （untreated）, 67.01 min^-1 （treated with 0.5 mol/L mercaptoacetic acid）, and 71.43 min^-1 （treated with 1.0 mol/L mercaptocacetic acid） while those for Cr^3＋ are 63.41 min^-1 （untreated）, 65.79 min （0.5 mol/L acid treated）, and 66.25 min^-1 （1.0 mol/L acid treated）.

electronic and magnetic structures of zinc blende ZnO doped with V impurities are studied by first-principles calculations based on the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker （KKR） method combined with the coherent potential approximation （CPA）. Calculations for the substitution of O by N or P are performed and the magnetic moment is found to be sensitive to the N or P content. Furthermore, the system exhibits a half-metallic band structure accompanied by the broadening of vanadium bands. The mechanism responsible for ferromagnetism is also discussed and the stability of the ferromagnetic state compared with that of the paramagnetic state is systematically investigated by calculating the total energy difference between them by using supercell method.

＜正＞We study synchronization in weighted complex networks and identify the leading parameters controlling synchronization. First we analyze the stability of complete synchronization in networks of identical oscillators based on graph spectrum. We show that the synchronizability of random networks with large enough minimal degrees is universally determined by the heterogeneity of node’s intensity, where the intensity of a node, defined as the total strength of input connections, is a natural combination of topology and weights. Further more, we carry out simulations of the synchronization patterns in the network outside the complete synchronization regime, when the coupling is not strong enough or when the synchronization state is perturbed by noise. We find that the effective synchronization is hierarchically organized, depending on the intensities. Nodes with large intensities form effective synchronization clusters.

The effects of meso 2, 3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), sodium 2, 3 dimercaptopropane 1-sulfonate (DMPS) and S-adenosyl L-methionine (SAM) on the enzymatic activities of mice were studied. The mice were given intraperitoneal (i. p. ) injections of these chelating agents (1 mmol/kg) and 3 h later the activity of 8-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) in the blood, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (γ-GT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the liver and kidney were determined. The activity of blood ALAD was significantly increased by the administration of DMSA and SAM while DMPS had only a moderate effect. The activities of other hepatic enzymes changed little when the mice were treated with these chelating agents, except for a significant reduction in hepatic ALP activlty following DMPS administration. Arsenic (Ⅲ) administration markedly increased the activities of ALT and ALP in the liver and kidneys. The changes in the enzymatic activities by treatment with arsenic were prevented by injection of DMSA,DMPS and SAM, DMSA being the most effective. These results indicate that DMSA, DMPS and SAM were not toxic to the liver or kidneys of mice and that treatment with DMSA is more effective than DMPS or SAM in protecting mice from acute hepatic or renal toxicity caused by arsenic.

Involvement of eicosanoids in the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer: the roles of cyclooxygenase-2 and 5-lipoxygenase

The interplay between inflammation and cancer progression is a growing area of research. A combination of clinical, epidemiological, and basic science investigations indicate that there is a relationship between inflammatory changes in the pancreas and neoplastic progression. Diets high in ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids provide increased substrate for arachidonic acid metabolism by cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) to form eicosanoids. These eicosanoids directly contribute to pancreatic cancer cell proliferation. Both COX-2 and 5-LOX are upregulated in multiple cancer types, including pancreatic cancer. In vitro studies using pancreatic cancer cell lines have demonstrated upregulation of COX-2 and 5-LOX at both the mRNA and protein levels. When COX-2 and 5-LOX are blocked via a variety of mechanisms, cancer cell proliferation is abrogated both in vitro and in vivo. The mechanism of COX-2 has been shown to include effects on apoptosis as well as angiogenesis. 5-LOX has been implicated in apoptosis. The use of COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibitors in clinical studies in patients with pancreatic cancer has been limited. Patient enrollment has been restricted to those with advanced disease which makes evaluation of these drugs as chemopreventive agents difficult. COX-2 and 5-LOX expression have been shown to be present during the early neoplastic changes of pancreatic cancer, well before progression to invasive disease. This indicates that the ideal role for these interventions is early in the disease process as preventive agents, perhaps in patients with chronic pancreatitis or hereditary pancreatitis.
