Occupational and environmental exposures to industrial chemicals are well known to cause hepatotoxicity and liver ***,despite extensive evidence showing that exposure can lead to disease,current research approaches and regulatory policies fail to address the possibility that subtle changes caused by low level exposure to chemicals may also enhance preexisting *** recent years,the conceptual understanding of the contribution of environmental chemicals to liver disease has progressed *** are often target of toxicity of environmental toxicants resulting in multisystem disorders involving different cells,tissues,and ***,we review persistent maladaptive changes to mitochondria in response to environmental toxicant exposure as a mechanism of *** better understanding of the mechanism(s) and risk factors that mediate the initiation and progression of toxicant-induced liver disease,rational targeted therapy can be developed to better predict risk,as well as to treat or prevent this disease.

Nutrient deficiencies are common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease （IBD）. Both total parenteral and enteral nutrition provide important supportive therapy for IBD patients, but in adults these are not useful for primary therapy. Dietary intervention with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids contained in fish oil may be useful for the care of IBD patients, and recent studies have slyessed the role of PPAR on NFKB activity on the potential beneficial effect of dietary lipids on intestinal function.

Diverse a nimal species use multimodal communica tion signals to coordina te reproductive *** active research in this field,the brain mechanisms underlying multimodal communication remain poorly *** to humans and many mammalian species,anurans often produce auditory signals accompanied by conspicuous visual cues(e.g.,vocal sac inflation).In this study,we used video playbacks to determine the role of vocal-sac inflation in little torrent frogs(Amolops torrentis).Then we exposed females to blank,visual,auditory,and audiovisual stimuli and analyzed whole brain tissue gene expression changes using *** results showed that both auditory cues(i.e.,male advertisement calls)and visual cues were attractive to female frogs,although auditory cues were more attractive than visual *** preferred simultaneous bimodal cues to unimodal *** hierarchical clustering of differentially expressed genes showed a close relationship between neurogenomic states and momentarily expressed sexual *** also found that the Gene Ontology terms and KeGG pathways involved in energy metabolism were mostly increased in blank contrast versus visual,acoustic,or audiovisual stimuli,indicating that brain energy use may play an important role in response to these *** sum,behavioral and neurogenomic responses to acoustic and visual cues are correlated in female little torrent frogs.

The most viable path to alleviate the Global Climate Change is the substitution of fossil fuel power plants for electricity generation with renewable energy *** substitution requires the development of very large energy storage capacity,with the inherent thermodynamic irreversibility of the storage-recovery ***,the world experiences a significant growth in the numbers of electric vehicles with large batteries.A fleet of electric vehicles is equivalent to an efficient storage capacity system to supplement the energy storage system of the electricity *** based on the hourly demand-supply data of eRCOT,a very large electricity grid,show that a fleet of electric vehicles cannot provide all the needed capacity and the remaining capacity must be met by *** though the storage capacity of the batteries is close to 1–2%of the needed storage capacity of the grid,the superior round-trip storage efficiency of batteries reduces the energy dissipation associated with the storage and recovery processes by up to 38%and the total hydrogen storage capacity by up to 50%.The study also shows that anticipated improvements in the round-trip efficiencies of batteries are almost three times more effective than improvements in hydrogen storage systems.

Prediction of protein and amino acid composition and digestibility in individual feedstuffs and mixed diets for pigs using near-infrared spectroscopy

Knowledge of the amounts and digestibility of amino acids in pig feedstuffs is essential for calculating the appropriate inclusion level in a complete *** chemical analysis and in vivo digestibility trials are time-consuming and costly and cannot be used for routine ***-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)offers a rapid,cost effective and environmentally friendly method for evaluating *** models were developed using NIRS to predict the content of crude protein and 18 amino acids from a wide range of feedstuffs used in pig production(n=607).The samples ranged from single feed ingredients(containing amino acids from 0.3 to 129.8 g/kg of dry matter)to feed mixtures(containing amino acids from 1.2 to 53.2 g/kg of dry matter).The predictive ability of the calibrations was tested with an independent dataset(n=150)and with ***,we compare these calibrations with calibrations developed on more narrowly defined groups of samples and with predictions from regression analysis of crude *** models were able to predict the concentrations of crude protein and 18 amino acids with good levels of precision and high coefficients of determination for calibration(RSQ^(CAL))from 0.91 to 0.99 and validation(RSQ^(VAL))from 0.87 to *** models were able to predict all amino acids except tryptophan and valine with greater accuracy than those from protein *** also developed calibration models to predict the apparent ileal and total tract digestibility of protein and amino *** the exception of tryptophan,RSQ values(>0.7)and standard error of cross validation(SeCV)values(ere obtained for the digestibility of most of the amino *** conclusion,NIRS can be used to predict crude protein and amino acid concentrations from a wide range of single ingredients and feed mixtures used for pig diets without separate models for each *** digestibility of protein and amino acids can be predicted with an

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of root cutting stress on the dynamic changes of endogenous hormone content and growth characteristics of Quercus variabilis roots,and to explore the physiological role of endogenous hormones in regulating root-crown interactions in the short *** morphological characteristics and endogenous hormone contents of normal roots(no root cutting,CK)and cut roots(cut by 1/3 of the length of the main root,RP)were determined by liquid chromatography,which was combined with mass spectrometry at different levels of different developmental *** results showed that the root growth indexes and root endogenous hormones in the RP group were superior to those in the CK *** comprehensive analysis of endogenous hormones,it was found that the crosstalk of IAA,JA,ABA and SA could activate the root growth *** the root cutting treatment,the root growth of Quercus variabilis seedlings could compensate for the inhibition of taproot growth by promoting lateral root *** growth and development of compensatory lateral roots contribute to the increase the total root length of plants,thus promoting the absorption of water and *** is speculated that plant hormones may be the key factors affecting their development,but this is not only related to the content of a single hormone,but more importantly,it is the interaction between various hormones.

Inoperable liver tumors are often treated by thermal ablation that destroys the tumor in situ and spares the adjacent hepatic ***–physical treatment has many advantages,but treatment by freezing or heating alone has some *** taking the advantages and disadvantages of cryosurgery and thermotherapy into consideration,a new thermal technique that combines cryosurgery and radio frequency ablation has been proposed,thereby overcoming the disadvantages of each treatment strategy and improving therapeutic *** new approach remains to be systematically studied in the liver;therefore,this study was performed to estimate survival after alternated cooling and heating ablation therapy in a VX2 rabbit liver tumor *** days after VX2 carcinoma implantation into the rabbit liver,tumors were treated with alternated cooling and heating ablation *** were monitored for 6 months after treatment and assessed with ultrasound(US)and computed tomography at 1,7,14,and 30 days *** tumor-bearing animals served as the control *** results show that alternate freezing and heating ablation therapy resulted in a good recovery of VX2 *** with the control group,treated rabbits lived significantly longer(P\0.05),with 70%of treated animals surviving to 196 days posttreatment without metastasis or recurrence,while none of the controls did *** was no local recurrence in the treatment *** rabbits in the control group developed metastasis,while metastasis was only observed in 30% of treated *** results suggest that alternate cooling and heating ablation therapy can prolong the survival time of rabbits with VX2 liver tumors and is an effective method for tumor ***,we also showed in this model that contrast enhanced US is a valid follow-up approach to assess treatment effectiveness.

Soil fungal and prokaryotic community structure exhibits differential short-term responses to timber harvest in the Pacific Northwest

Conventional clear-cut timber harvest is a widespread industrial practice across the Pacific Northwest;however,information regarding how these practices impact soil microbial community structure at the regional scale is *** evidence of consistent and substantial impact of harvest on soil microbial functional profiles across the region(despite a range of environmental conditions),the objective of this study was to determine the extent to which harvest also influences the structure of prokaryotic and fungal soil microbial communities,and how generalized these trends are throughout the geographic *** soil samples were collected one year before and after harvest across nine second-growth Douglas-fir forests in the Pacific *** community DNA was extracted from the soils,and high-throughput targeted gene sequencing of the 16 S r RNA gene for prokaryotes and the internal transcribed spacer(ITS)gene for fungi was *** diversity was consistently and significantly higher after harvest;it was moderately so for fungal communities(+14.6%),but only marginally so for prokaryotic communities(+2.0%).Similarly,on average,a greater proportion of the variation in the community structure of fungi(20.1%)at each site was associated with forest harvest compared to that of prokaryotes(13.2%).Overall,the greatest influence of timber harvest on soil microbial communities appeared to be a relative depletion of ectomycorrhizal fungi,with a concomitant enrichment of saprotrophic *** the short-term responses of soil microbial communities across the region,particularly those of tree root-associated symbionts,may aid our understanding of the role soil microbial communities play in ecological succession.

For a Chinese dairy farm with 2200 milking cows,the annual manure production and manure nutrients(nitrogen and phosphorus)were *** nitrogen losses from cattle housing with scraped solid floors were based on on-farm *** on experiences from the Netherlands,nutrient levels in the solid and liquid fractions after slurry separation were *** the basis of assumptions for nutrient losses during covered lagoon storage and land application of the liquid fraction,nitrogen and phosphorous fertilization rates were calculated for the 67 hm^(2)of agricultural land that receive the liquid fraction by gravity *** results show that the application rates of nitrogen and phosphorous significantly exceed the crop needs,which will probably result in losses to soil and *** order to aim for a balance between nutrient application and crop needs and,as such,reduce environmental harm,the authors recommend to establish application standards for nitrogen and phosphorous on arable land in China and to formulate farm-specific Nutrient Management Plans.
