Marble epistyles under shear: an experimental study of the role of “Relieving space”

The mechanical response of mutually interconnected epistyles is studied experimentally. The specimens are made of two marble blocks connected to each other with an “I”-shaped titanium connector placed in grooves sculptured on the blocks and covered with cementitious material. The specific way of connecting epistyles simulates the one used by scientists restoring the ancient “connections” of the epistyles of the Parthenon Temple. This “connection”, although designed to sustain mainly tensile loading, undertakes, also, shear load, in case of excitations imposing to the epistyles displacements normal to the connector’s axis. Attention is focused to enlighten the role of a novel design technique aiming to relieve the stress field around the connector. According to this technique, part of the connector’s web is left uncovered, forming the so-called “Relieving space”, assisting the unconstrained deformation of the connector. Both traditional and innovative sensing techniques were employed in an effort to obtain data from the interior of the three-material-complex (marble-cementitious material-titanium). Analysis of the data indicated that the “Relieving space” reduces the overall stiffness of the system, protecting marble in case of over-loading. Moreover, it was concluded that the innovative techniques employed provide pre-failure indicators well in advance of the catastrophic failure of the specimens.

China is facing challenges to tackle the threat of climate change while reducing social *** eradication requires improvement in the living conditions of low-income households,which leads in turn to higher carbon footprints and may undermine the efforts of climate change *** studies have assessed the climate impacts of poverty eradication,but few have quantified how the additional carbon emissions of poverty eradication are shared at the subnational level in China and the impact on China’s climate *** investigated the recent trend of carbon footprint inequality in China’s provinces and estimated the climate burden of different poverty reduction schemes,measured by increased carbon *** results indicate that poverty eradication will not impede the achievement of national climate targets,with an average annual household carbon footprint increase of 0.1%–1.2%.However,the carbon emissions growth in less developed provinces can be 4.0%,five times that in wealthy *** developed regions suffer a greater climate burden because of poverty eradication,which may offset carbon reduction ***,interregional collaboration is needed to coordinate inequality reduction with investments in low-carbon trajectories in all provinces.

3-dimensional Kinematic Comparison of Arm Movements between an Individual with NGLY1 deficiency and a Neurotypical Individual

NGLY1 deficiency is an ultra-rare autosomal recessively inherited disorder. Characteristic symptoms include among others, developmental delays, movement disorders, liver function abnormalities, seizures, and problems with tear formation. Movements are hyperkinetic and may include dysmetric, choreo-athetoid, myoclonic and dystonic movement elements. To date, there have been no quantitative reports describing arm movements of individuals with NGLY1 deficiency. This report provides quantitative information about a series of arm movements performed by an individual with NGLY1 deficiency and an aged-matched neurotypical participant. Three categories of arm movements were tested: 1) open ended reaches without specific end point targets;2) goal-directed reaches that included grasping an object;3) picking up small objects from a table placed in front of the participants. Arm movement kinematics were obtained with a camera-based motion analysis system and “initiation” and “maintenance” phases were identified for each movement. The combination of the two phases was labeled as a “complete” movement. Three-dimensional analysis techniques were used to quantify the movements and included hand trajectory pathlength, joint motion area, as well as hand trajectory and joint jerk cost. These techniques were required to fully characterize the movements because the NGLY1 individual was unable to perform movements only in the primary plane of progression instead producing motion across all three planes of movement. The individual with NGLY1 deficiency was unable to pick up objects from a table or effectively complete movements requiring crossing the midline. The successfully completed movements were analyzed using the above techniques and the results of the two participants were compared statistically. Zinc-oxide/PdMs-clad tapered fiber saturable absorber for passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser

We propose and demonstrate a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser(edFL)based on zinc-oxide/polydimethylsiloxane(ZnO/PdMs)saturable absorber(sA)that evanescently interacts with the light on a tapered *** ZnO/PdMs composite is coated on the whole surface of the tapered fiber to guarantee the maximum efficiency of the sA device,with a measured insertion loss of 0.87 dB and a modulation depth of 6.4%.The proposed laser can generate soliton mode-locking operation at a threshold power of 33.07 *** generated output pulse yields a repetition rate and pulse width of 9.77 MHz and 1.03 ps,*** results indicate that the proposed ZnO/PdMs-clad tapered fiber could be useful as an efficient,compatible,and low-cost sA device for ultrafast laser applications.

Transient receptor potential channels as predictive marker and potential indicator of chemoresistance in colon cancer

Mitotic catastrophe(MC),which occurs under dysregulated mitosis,represents a fascinating tactic to specifically eradicate tumor *** pyroptosis can be a death form of MC remains ***-mediated protein degradation is crucial for ***(BTZ),which inhibits the 20s catalytic particle of proteasome,is approved to treat multiple myeloma and mantle cell lymphoma,but not solid tumors due to primary *** date,whether and how proteasome inhibitor affected the fates of cells in M-phase remains ***,we show that BTZ treatment,or silencing of PsMC5,a subunit of 19s regulatory particle of proteasome,causes G2-and M-phase arrest,multi-polar spindle formation,and consequent caspase-3/GsdMe-mediated pyroptosis in M-phase(designated as mitotic pyroptosis).Further investigations reveal that inhibitor of Wee1/PKMYT1(Pd0166285),but not inhibitor of ATR,CHK1 or CHK2,abrogates the BTZ-induced G2-phase arrest,thus exacerbates the BTZ-induced mitotic arrest and *** BTZ and Pd0166285 treatment(named BP-Combo)selectively kills various types of solid tumor cells,and significantly lessens the IC50 of both BTZ and Pd0166285 compared to BTZ or Pd0166285 *** using various mouse models show that BP-Combo has much stronger inhibition on tumor growth and metastasis than BTZ or Pd0166285 monotreatment,and no obvious toxicity is observed in BP-Combo-treated *** findings disclose the effect of proteasome inhibitors in inducing pyroptosis in M-phase,characterize pyroptosis as a new death form of mitotic catastrophe,and identify dual inhibition of proteasome and Wee family kinases as a promising anti-cancer strategy to selectively kill solid tumor cells.

The effects of the salt stress on plant growth are usually increased by the water *** studied the impact of both stresses in simultaneous pulses of drought and salinity on Paspalum *** forage species is native to south America,spread in grasslands in many tropical,subtropical,and temperate areas of the world,and very common in grasslands of the Flooding Pampas of *** what happens in *** compared a pot experiment,a non-stressed control against water stress for a month(midpoint between field capacity and wilting point),and two saline stresses(moderate,6 d·sm^(−1)and strong,12 d·sm^(−1)),also for a *** biomass(green leaf;non-leaf green material,and dry material)and roots were harvested,weighed,and analyzed for nitrogen,phosphorus,and *** biomass of all components significantly decreased when both stresses were *** plus strong saline stress reduced by half the total biomasses,compared to the *** proportion of aerial biomass/root biomass ratio as well as aerial green component/dry materials ratio tend to decrease when subjected to both *** concentration in plants was not significantly affected,but phosphorus concentration increased in aerial biomass components,from 0.10 to 0.18 mg·kg^(−1)between the extreme treatments,but did not change in *** concentration in plants increased(i.e.,in green leave sodium(Na)increased from 0.27 to 2.01 mg·kg^(−1)between the extreme treatments),whereas other cations either did not change or decreased,affecting the ratios between *** performance allows us to infer that the Na accumulation of *** behaves in an intermediate range,compared to very tolerant to salts or non-salt tolerant species of the Paspalum *** agreement,when salts were applied in the form of a pulse,*** tolerated higher salinity than that found by other authors for the same species,using continuous salinity.

Heat transfer study on solid and porous convective fins with temperature-dependent heat generation using efficient analytical method

A simple and highly accurate semi-analytical method, called the differential transformation method(dTM), was used for solving the nonlinear temperature distribution equation in solid and porous longitudinal fin with temperature dependent internal heat generation. The problem was solved for two main cases. In the first case, heat generation was assumed variable by fin temperature for a solid fin and in second heat generation varied with temperature for a porous fin. Results are presented for the temperature distribution for a range of values of parameters appearing in the mathematical formulation(e.g. N, εG, and G). Results reveal that dTM is very effective and convenient. Also, it is found that this method can achieve more suitable results in comparison to numerical methods.

Application of exp-function Method to Wave solutions of the sine-Gordon and Ostrovsky equations

In this work, the exp-function method is employed to find new wave solutions for the sine-Gordon and Ostrovsky equation. The equations are simplified to the nonlinear partial differential equations and then different types of exact solutions are extracted by this method. It is shown that the exp-function method is a powerful analytical method for solving other nonlinear equations occurring in nonlinear physical phenomena. Results are presented in contour plots that show the different values of effective parameters on the velocity profiles.
