A novel method for modeling the phase change of iron ore particles in the cohesive zone of a blast furnace

Cohesive zone plays a vital role in the stable operation of a blast furnace(BF),yet the complex phase change process of iron ore particles in this zone is still not well understood.In this study,a novel one-dimensional(1D)unsteady phase change model was developed to elucidate the heat transfer and melting mechanisms of iron ore particles.After model validation,the effects of several key operating parameters(e.g.,particle diameter,gas velocity,initial temperature)on the phase change behavior of iron ore particles were analyzed,and the joint effect of multiple parameters was discussed.The results show that larger-sized iron ore particles possess lower specific surface areas,which in turn reduces their convective heat absorption capacity.Consequently,the distance from the solid-liquid phase interface to the particle surface increases,thereby slowing down the movement of the phase interface and pro-longing the melting duration of the particles.Increasing the gas velocity and the initial temperature does not have a significant impact on reducing the duration of the complete melting process.Under the specified conditions,it is observed that increasing the gas velocity by 3-fold and 9-fold results in a reduction of the melting duration by 2.4%and 8.3%,respectively.elevating the initial temperature of iron ore particles results in a decrease in the core-to-surface temperature difference,a slower heating rate,and a shorter duration to achieve melting.Among the factors affecting the melting process,the particle diameter is found to be the most significant in terms of the liquid phase precipitation,mushy zone thickness,and core-to-surface temperature difference of iron ore particles.

Controllable chemical redox reactions to couple microbial degradation for organic contaminated sites remediation:A review

Global environmental concern over organic contaminated sites has been progressively conspicuous during the process of urbanization and industrial restructuring.While traditional physical or chemical remediation technologies may significantly destroy the soil structure and function,coupling moderate chemical degradation with microbial remediation becomes a potential way for the green,economic,and efficient remediation of contaminated sites.Hence,this work systematically elucidates why and how to couple chemical technology with microbial remediation,mainly focused on the controllable redox reactions of organic contaminants.The rational design of materials structure,selective generation of reactive oxygen species,and estimation of degradation pathway are described for chemical oxidation.Meanwhile,current progress on efficient and selective reductions of organic contaminants(i.e.,dechlorination,defluorination,-NO_(2) reduction)is introduced.Combined with the microbial remediation of contaminated sites,several consideration factors of how to couple chemical and microbial remediation are proposed based on both fundamental and practical points of view.This review will advance the understanding and development of chemical-microbial coupled remediation for organic contaminated sites.

Advances in Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Blue energy Harvesting and Marine environmental Monitoring

Blue energy,which includes rainfall,tidal current,wave,and water-flow energy,is a promising renewable resource,although its exploitation is limited by current technologies and thus remains low.This form of energy is mainly harvested by electromagnetic generators(eMGs),which generate electricity via Lorenz force-driven electron flows.Triboelectric nano genera tors(TeNGs)and TeNG networks exhibit superiority over eMGs in low-frequency and high-entropy energy harvesting as a new approach for blue energy harvesting.A TeNG produces electrical outputs by adopting the mechanism of Maxwell’s displacement current.To date,a series of research efforts have been made to optimize the structure and performance of TeNGs for effective blue energy harvesting and marine environmental applications.Despite the great progress that has been achieved in the use of TeNGs in this context so far,continuous exploration is required in energy conversion,device durability,power management,and environmental applications.This review reports on advances in TeNGs for blue energy harvesting and marine environmental monitoring.It introduces the theoretical foundations of TeNGs and discusses advanced TeNG prototypes for blue energy harvesting,including TeNG structures that function in freestanding and contact-separation modes.Performance enhancement strategies for TeNGs intended for blue energy harvesting are also summarized.Finally,marine environmental applications of TeNGs based on blue energy harvesting are discussed.

Traditionally,wildlife habitat research mainly extracts two-dimensional habitat factors.However,they live in three-dimensional space,and the three-dimensional structure of the forest ecosystem is an important factor affecting the composition of the mammal community(Fig.1a,b),and the three-dimensional structure of the forest also determines the behavior pattern of wildlife multidimensional habitat selection or use(Flaspohler et al.2010;Palminteri et al.2012;Müller et al.2014).For instance,forest structure determines the vertical distribution of annual edible shoots,fruits,or seed nuts resources in space,providing additional ecological niches for frugivores,rodents,and other species,and then leading to niche differentiation of wild animals in vertical space utilization,thus increasing species coexistence(e.g.Li et al.2023).

Controlled peptide assembly offers significant promise to develop synthetic supramolecular nanostructures to display material and biological properties that mimic protein assemblies in nature.Despite the progress in forming peptide nanostructures of various morphology,there exists a distinct gap between natural and synthetic assembly systems in terms of size control.Constructing nanostructures with a narrow size distribution that can be tuned over a wide range of length-scales is essential for applications that require precise spacing between objects.This approach provides the opportunity to correlate materials and biological properties of interest with assembly size.In this review,we discuss representative endeavors over the past two decades for design of size-controllable peptide nanostructures using tunable building blocks.Other mechanisms for size control,e.g.,molecular frustration,template-directed peptide assembly,and multi-component peptide co-assembly,will also be discussed.We also demonstrate the applicable scopes of these strategies and suggest potential future avenues for scientific advances in this field.

A lubrication model for bubbly oil lubrication with interfacial effect and thermal effect using the theory of multiphase mixtures

Bubbly oil lubrication is a type of lubrication method.However,the lubrication model of the bubbly oil has not been thoroughly considered.This paper aims to investigate the modelling for bubbly oil lubrication considering the interfacial effect and thermal effect,and a theoretical model is established based on the theory of multiphase mixtures.The interfacial and thermal effects on the static characteristics of a thrust bearing are analyzed.A test rig for the thrust bearing is developed to measure the static characteristics of the bearing under bubbly oil lubrication.The results show that the bearing static characteristics,i.***.bearing temperature rise,film thickness,friction torque,and volume flow,increase with consideration of three interfacial effects;the bearing temperature rise increases but the film thickness,friction torque,and volume flow rate decrease with consideration of the three thermal effects;the thermal effect on the bearing static characteristics is greater than the interfacial effect.

Hepatitis e virus(HeV)is one of the leading causes of acute viral hepatitis worldwide.Although most of HeV infections are asymptomatic,some patients will develop the symptoms,especially pregnant women,the elderly,and patients with preexisting liver diseases,who often experience anorexia,nausea,vom-iting,malaise,abdominal pain,and jaundice.HeV infection may become chronic in immunosuppressed individuals.In addition,HeV infection can also cause several extrahepatic manifestations.HeV exists in a wide range of hosts in nature and can be transmitted across species.Hence,animals susceptible to HeV can be used as models.The establishment of animal models is of great significance for studying HeV transmission,clinical symptoms,extrahepatic manifestations,and therapeutic strategies,which will help us understand the pathogenesis,prevention,and treatment of hepatitis e.This review summarized the animal models of HeV,including pigs,monkeys,rabbits,mice,rats,and other animals.For each animal species,we provided a concise summary of the HeV genotypes that they can be infected with,the cross-species transmission pathways,as well as their role in studying extrahepatic manifestations,prevention,and treatment of HeV infection.The advantages and disadvantages of these animal models were also emphasized.This review offers new perspectives to enhance the current understanding of the research landscape surrounding HeV animal models.

Let g be a classical complex simple Lie algebra and q be a parabolic subalgebra.Let M be a generalized Verma module induced from a one dimensional representation of q.Such M is called a scalar generalized Verma module.In this paper,we will determine the reducibility of scalar generalized Verma modules associated to maximal parabolic subalgebras by computing explicitly the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of the corresponding highest weight modules.

Prediction of chemical short-range order in high-/medium-entropy alloys

Chemical short-range orders(CSROs),as the built-in sub-nanoscale entities in a high-/medium-entropy alloy(H/MeA),have aroused an ever-increasing interest.With multi-principal elements in an H/MeA to form a complex concentrated solution,a variety of sub-systems of species exist to induce the metastable ordered compounds as candidates for ultimate CSROs.The issues remain pending on the origin of CSROs as to how to judge if CSRO will form in an H/MeA and particularly,what kind of CSROs would be stably produced if there were multiple possibilities.Here,the first-principles method,along with the proposed local formation energy calculation in allusion to the atomic-scale chemical heterogeneities,is used to predict the CSRO formation based on the mechanical stability,thermodynamic formation energy,and electronic characteristics.The simulations are detailed in an equiatomic ternary VCoNi MeA with three kinds of potential compounds,i.e.,L1_(1),L1_(2),and B2,in the face-centered cubic matrix.It turns out that L1_(1)is stable but hard to grow up so as to become the final CSRO.L1_(1)is further predicted as CSROs in CrCoNi,but unable to form in FeCoNi and CrMnFeCoNi alloys.These predictions are consistent with the experimental observations.Our findings shed light on understanding the formation of CSROs.This method is applicable to other H/MeAs to design and tailor CSROs by tuning chemical species/contents and thermal processing for high performance.
