In this editorial I comment on the article by Ahmed et al published in a recent issue of the World J Orthop 2023;14:*** is well known that patients who have undergone a liver transplant(LT)may need to have a total hip arthroplasty(THA)or total knee arthroplasty(TKA)*** et al stated that the mortality rate in these patients was similar to the one of the general ***,there are three articles previously published that found higher mortality in LT patients who experienced THA/TKA than in the general population(individuals without LT).Therefore,in this editorial I would like to point out that there is controversy in the literature regarding whether LT patients undergoing THA/TKA have higher mortality than the general ***,future research should attempt to resolve this controversy.

The knee is frequently affected by severe orthopedic changes known as hemophilic arthropathy(HA) in patients with deficiency of coagulation factor Ⅷ or Ⅸ and thus this manuscript seeks to present a current perspective of the role of the orthopedic surgeon in the management of these *** factor replacement therapy(FRT) is optimal to prevent HA,however adherence to this regerous treatment is challenging leading to breakthrough *** patients with chronic hemophilic synovitis,the prelude to HA,radiosynovectomy(RS) is the optimal to ameliorate *** in people with hemophilia(PWH) is associated with a high risk of bleeding and infection,and must be performed with FRT.A coordinated effort including orthopedic surgeons,hematologists,physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians,physiotherapists and other team members is key to optimal ***,orthopedic procedures should be performed in specialized hospitals with experienced *** we are able to prevent orthopedic problems of the knee in PWH will have to continue performing orthopedic procedures(arthrocentesis,RS,arthroscopic synovectomy,hamstring release,arthroscopic debridement,alignment osteotomy,and total knee arthroplasty).By using the aforementioned procedures,the quality of life of PWH will be improved.

BACKGROUND Radiocarpal dislocations are rare but potentially devastating *** outcomes are associated with inadequate or lost reduction,such as ulnar translocation,but no consensus exists on the ideal fixation *** bridge plate fixation has been described for various settings in the treatment of complex distal radius fractures and can be fixed distally to the second or third metacarpal,but its application for radiocarpal dislocations has not been *** To determine whether distal fixation to the second or third metacarpal *** Using a cadaveric radiocarpal dislocation model,the effect of distal fixation was studied in two stages:(1)A pilot study that investigated the effect of distal fixation alone;and(2)a more refined study that investigated the effect of described techniques for distal and proximal *** were measured in various parameters to determine the quality of the reduction *** The pilot study found that focusing on distal fixation alone without changing proximal fixation results in ulnar translocation and volar subluxation when fixing distally to the second metacarpal compared with the *** second iteration demonstrated that anatomic alignment in coronal and sagittal planes could be achieved with each *** In a cadaveric radiocarpal dislocation model,anatomic alignment can be maintained with bridge plate fixation to the second metacarpal or the third metacarpal if the described technique is *** considering dorsal bridge plate fixation for radiocarpal dislocations,the surgeon is encouraged to understand the nuances of different fixation techniques and how implant design features may influence proximal placement.

There is controversy in the literature on where to place the tourniquet(thigh,calf,ankle)for foot and ankle *** some authors prefer the ankle tourniquet to the calf tourniquet,others state that the surgeon can decide between using the thigh tourniquet or the ankle tourniquet,since there was no difference in postoperative pain between *** to place the tourniquet during foot and ankle surgery to cause the least possible postoperative pain to the patient as a result of the tourniquet is a common question in clinical *** reality is that,unfortunately,there is no consensus on this *** the only possible way to answer this question would be to conduct a comparative study with sufficient statistical power to reach scientifically sound *** does not seem easy to carry out such a study,but it would be important to be able to answer the question posed in the title of this editorial once and for all.

Human activities involving noise emission can affect wild *** mink was exposed to road noise and human voice playbacks to analyze how sound intensity level and duration of both noises altered the time that individuals were active and if their fecal cortisol metabolite(FCM)levels varied.A Hierarchical Analysis Cluster was performed to establish 2 mink groups with respect to both noise source type:short duration/low intensity(SL)and long duration/high intensity(LH).We performed general linear mixed models to evaluate the variation in locomotor activity duration(s)and FCM(nanogram per gram)levels,*** results showed both road noise and human voices decreased locomotor activity duration in SL more sharply compared with LH,and human voices were the triggers that induced the most pronounced response to both exposure ***(ng/g)levels increased in SL compared with LH during road noise while the opposite happened during human *** based on sex and age of individuals were *** conclusion,noise characteristics given by the sound type determined the variations in locomotor activity duration while noise exposure level determined the variations in FCM(ng/g)*** should be paid to noisy activities(e.g.,recreational activities for visitors in protected natural areas)and loud groups of people to conserve wildlife,especially noise sensitive species.

Lesser kestrels Falco naumanni are migratory central-place foragers that breed in dynamic arable landscapes. After arriving from migration, kestrels have no knowledge of the distribution of crops, and consequently prey, around their colony. The energy demand of pairs increases as breeding season progresses, but at the same time prey abundance, and their knowledge on prey distribution, also increases. Wind can have a strong influence on flight cost and kestrels should try to reduce energy expendi- ture when possible. When prey abundance is low, kestrels have little knowledge of prey distribution, and pairs have no chicks, they could reduce foraging flight cost by leaving the colony with tailwinds. When prey is abundant, knowledge on prey distribu- tion has increased, and chick demand is high, kestrels should fly to the most favorable foraging patches. We analyzed foraging trips directions in a lesser kestrel colony along the breeding season and in relation to wind speed and direction. We recorded 664 foraging trips from 19 individuals using GPS-dataloggers. We found that outward flights direction changed from uniform to a concentrated distribution along the season, as prey abundance and individual experience increased. We also found a temporal trend in the angular difference between outward flights and wind directions, with low values early in the season and then increa- sing as expected, but again low values at the end, contrary to expectation. Results suggest changes in kestrels foraging strategy along the season in relation to wind. Kestrels depart more with tailwinds in exploratory flights early in the season, while there is a spurious coincidence in direction to preferred foraging patches and dominant wind direction at the end [Current Zoology 60 （5）： 604-615, 2014].

Partial shading is a common problem that affects bus regulation in DC microgrids with several photovoltaic(PV) modules as energy sources, as a result of reduced solar irradiance reaching the *** problem can be mitigated by incorporating batteries, but if they are not included, appropriate control strategies must be used. This paper presents a new approach in a PV-based DC microgrid, which provides a high-quality bus voltage regulation in islanding mode, without being affected by partial shading or problems associated with PV module connection and disconnection. The solution proposed herein ensures a proper voltage regulation without being affected by problems such as failures in PV modules or mismatch between them. Besides, it can help to prevent PV partial shade stress by disconnecting the affected modules. A further advantage of the approach is the flexibility to connect more PV modules. The advantages of this approach were verified in a 200 W prototype.

There are thousands of abandoned mine land(AML)sites in the *** need to be restored to reduce wind and water erosion,provide wildlife forage,shade streams,and improve *** created from woody biomass that would normally be burned in slash piles can be applied to soil to improve soil properties and is one method to restore AML soil productive *** this‘waste’biomass for biochar and reclamation activities will reduce wildfire risk,air pollution from burning,and particulates released from burning *** has the potential to improve water quality,bind heavy metals,or decrease toxic chemical concentrations,while improving soil health to establish sustainable plant cover,thereby preventing soil erosion,leaching,or other unintended,negative environmental *** forest residues to create biochar also helps reduce woody biomass and improves forest health and *** address concerns surrounding organic and inorganic contaminants on the biochar and how this might affect its’efficacy and provide valuable information to increase restoration activities on AMLs using biochar alone or in combination with other organic *** examples of AML biochar restoration sites initiated to evaluate short-and long-term above-and belowground ecosystem responses are presented.

AIM:To evaluate the effect of lid scrubbing using a gel combining different natural extracts on ocular signs and symptoms of dry eye ***:A retrospective study was performed on 19 dry eye patients(51.1±16.0y).Non-invasive tear break-up time,tear meniscus height,meibomian gland loss,lipid layer thickness,conjunctival redness,corneal staining,ocular surface disease index(OSDI),and ocular pain intensity were measured before(baseline),1wk,and 2mo after lid scrubbing with a gel containing different natural extracts(okra extract,aloe vera leaf juice,hydrolysed soy protein,caffeine,citrus unshiu peel extract,and raspberry seed oil).ReSULTS:Compared with the baseline,there was a statistically significant improvement in both first(P=0.048)and average(P=0.026)non-invasive tear break-up time 2mo after treatment,as well as in corneal staining(P=0.043,0.012),OSDI(Pensity(Per 1wk and *** addition,there was no correlation between ocular signs and ***:The lid scrubbing with a gel combining different natural extracts show beneficial effects on tear film stability,corneal damage,and ocular symptoms,which is the reason why this therapeutic procedure is proposed as an alternative for dry eye ***,it is not possible to attribute this beneficial effect solely to the presence of the natural extracts in the gel,primarily due to the absence of a negative control group.
