Exploring the associations between skeletal muscle echogenicity and physical function in aging adults:A systematic review with meta-analyses

Speciation in nanosecond laser ablation of zinc in water

In situ experimental methods have been applied to resolve mass flow and chemical speciation in the pulsed laser ablation of zinc in water. The chemical speciation has been resolved by time-resolved μ-X-ray absorption spectroscopy and mapped onto the macroscopic mass flow during material ejection from the metallic target and bubble dynamics of evaporated water. Large particles and agglomerates have been detected via dark-field X-ray imaging with a Shack-Hartmann sensor. The characteristic of the dynamics is that the vapor bubble is nearly homogeneously filled with ablated material. This persists during bubble collapse,which means that the ablated particles are captured and retracted towards the target. Limited mass escape is indicated by the X-ray absorption signal. Importantly, the near-edge structure at the Zn-K;transition delivers information on the chemical state of the ejected material. It clearly confirms that oxidation is not present within the bubble phase and the following sub-millisecond time scale. The oxidation proceeds on Zn nanoparticles in suspension on a second to minute course. Within the first microseconds,a Zn atom phase is detected that resembles Zn vapor. The addition of either reductive NaBH;or oxidative HAuCl;to the water phase influences the quantity of the atom contribution moderately, but does not influence the initial atom phase. Such behavior must be understood in terms of the nanosecond pulse excitation. After ejected material and a plasma is formed within the pulse duration of 7 ns the laser is able to further heat the ejecta and transform it partly into vapor. Correspondingly, the coupling of energy into the ablation zone as followed by plasma intensity and bubble size follows a threshold behavior as a function of laser fluence, marking the onset of laser-plasma heating. The reaction conditions inside the bubble are probably reductive due to the concomitant formation of excess hydrogen.

Unusual Polarization Properties of Supernova Remnant g4.8＋6.2 at 1400MHz

Unusual polarization properties of the high galactic latitude supernova remnant (SNR) g4.8+6.2 are reported. The percentage polarization is larger than 70% over the two main shells of g4.8+6.2 at 1400MHz. It is the second SNR with such high polarization at such a low frequency among the known 225SNRs. We show that this is very unusual for an SNR. Its morphology and polarization are very similar to those of the supernova remnant DA530 (g93.0+6.5), which is another high galactic latitude SNR.

A 5°×7°sky area containing two large radio structures of g203.1+6.6 and g206.7+5.9 with a size of about 2.°5 and 3.°5 respectively is scanned by using the L-band 19-beam receiver of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope(FAST).The FAST L-band receiver covers a frequency range of 1.0-1.5 *** of the receiving system,including the measurements of the half-power beam width,gain,and main-beam efficiency is made by observing the *** multi-channel spectroscopy backend mounted to the receiver allows an in-band spectral-index *** brightness-temperature spectral indices of both objects are measured to beβ~-2.6 *** emission is detected from the archival Effelsbergλ11 cm data for all the shell structures of g203.1+6.6 and g206.7+*** results clearly indicate a non-thermal synchrotron emitting nature,confirming that g203.1+6.6 and g206.7+5.9 are large shell-type supernova remnants(SNRs).Based on morphological correlation between the radio continuum emission of g206.7+5.9 and the H i structures,the kinematic distance to this new SNR is estimated to be about 440 pc,placing it in the Local Arm.

The galactic halo magnetic field revisited

Recently, Sun et al. published new galactic 3D-models of magnetic fields in the disk and halo of the Milky Way and the distribution of cosmic-ray electron density by taking into account the thermal electron density model NE2001 by Cordes ＆ Lazio. The models successfully reproduce observed continuum and polarization all-sky maps and the distribution of rotation measures of extragalactic sources across the sky. However, the model parameters obtained for the galactic halo, although reproducing the observations, seem physically unreasonable： the magnetic field needs to be significantly stronger in the galactic halo than in the plane and the cosmic-ray distribution must be truncated at about 1 kpc to avoid excessive synchrotron emission from the halo. The reason for these unrealistic parameters was the low scale-height of the warm thermal gas of about 1 kpc adopted in the NE2001 model. However, this scale- height seemed reasonable and was well studied by numerous investigations. Recently, the scale-height of the warm gas in the galaxy was revised by gaensler et al. to about 1.8 kpc, by showing that the 1 kpc scale-height results from a systematic bias in the analysis of pulsar data. This implies a higher thermal electron density in the galactic halo, which in turn reduces the halo magnetic field strength to account for the observed rotation measures of extragalactic sources. We slightly modified the NE2001 model according to the new scale-height and revised the Sun et al. model parameters accordingly： the strength of the regular halo magnetic field is now 2 μg or lower, and the physically unrealistic cutoff in z for the cosmic-ray electron density is removed. The simulations based on the revised 3D-models reproduce all-sky observations as before.

Anion structural effects on interaction of rare earth element ions with Dowex 50W X8 cation exchange resin

The effect of the anion in the original rare earth element（REE） solution on the reversible ion exchange of Ce nitrate and Ce sulfate with the Dowex 50 W X8 was investigated using attenuated total reflection infrared（ATR-IR） spectroscopy, continuous flow reactor studies coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy（ICP-MS）, and density functional theory（DFT）. The simulated IR spectrum at the DFT B3 LYP/6-31 g（d） level was compared to the experimental results to characterize the IR spectrum, molecular interactions, and bonding of the ion exchanged species. The continuous liquid flow reactor studies show a capacity of 0.72 mmol/g sorbent for the Ce nitrateand 0.96 mmol/g sorbent for the Ce sulfate with the Dowex 50 W X8. The flow reactor studies reveal the type of solute anion（SO_4^（（2-）） or NO_3^（（-））） associated with the REE during cation exchange significantly affects the sorption capacity of the Dowex 50 W X8 ion exchange resin. The calculated REE binding energy（BE） and the DFT optimized structures suggest that the differences in sorption capacity is the result of the formation of different types of partially ionexchanged Ce_2^（（3＋））2 SO_4^（（2-）） and Ce^（（3＋）） 3 NO_3^（（-））. These results suggest that the solute anion affects the equilibrium constants of the Dowex resin by the formation of a charged layer capable of retaining the counterion. Modifying the sulfonic acid site（H＋） in the Dowex 50 W X8 with the NH_4~＋ counterion does not affect the sorption capacity and retention times of the Ce nitrate and Ce sulfate species. These results suggest that the counterions and co-ions having a finite size, may limit access to the Dowex sulfonate active site where the type of REE cation as a nitrate or sulfate in solution may significantly modify the sorption capacity of the ion exchange resin. Similar results are obtained during sorption with nitrates and sulfates of Sm and Yb.

Using immune cell-based bioactivity assays to compare the inflammatory activities of oil sands process-affected waters from a pilot scale demonstration pit lake

In this study,we provide evidence that oil sands process-affected waters(OSPW)contain factors that activate the antimicrobial and proinflammatory responses of immune ***,using the murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line,we establish the bioactivity of two different OSPW samples and their isolated ***,we directly compared the bioactivity of two pilot scale demonstration pit lake(DPL)water samples,which included expressed water from treated tailings(termed the before water capping sample;BWC)as well as an after water capping(AWC)sample consisting of a mixture of expressed water,precipitation,upland runoff,coagulated OSPW and added *** inflammatory(*** activating)bioactivity was associated with the AWC sample and its organic fraction(OF),whereas the BWC sample had reduced bioactivity that was primarily associated with its inorganic fraction(IF).Overall,these results indicate that at non-toxic exposure doses,the RAW 264.7 cell line serves as an acute,sensitive and reliable biosensor for the screening of inflammatory constituents within and among discrete OSPW samples.
