Background: The classic rhizom.lic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP) phenotype involves a typical facial appearance, cataracts, skeletal dysplasia causing disproportionate som.tic growth failure, m.crocephaly, and severe psychom.tor defects. Biochem.cal abnorm.lities include im.aired plasm.logen biosynthesis in all form. of RCDP and accum.lation of phytanic acid in RCDP type 1. A subset of patients has a m.lder clinical and biochem.cal phenotype, with less severe neurologic im.airm.nt and an incom.lete deficiency in plasm.logens. The im.act of plasm.logen deficiency on neurologic function is severe, causing spasticity and m.ntal defects, but its pathom.chanism.is still unknown. The authors specifically focused on m.elination because m.elin is rich in ethanolam.ne plasm.logens. Objective: To define the neuroim.ging characteristics of the genetic peroxisom.l disorder RCDP. m.thods: Twenty- one m. im.ges of the brain and cervical spine of 11 patients were evaluated and correlated with neurologic and biochem.cal profiles. Results: No abnorm.lities on m.I were seen in the patients with a m.ld phenotype of RCDP, whereas delayed m.elination, ventricular enlargem.nt and increased subarachnoidal spaces, supratentorial m.elin abnorm.lities, and cerebellar atrophy were observed in patients with the severe phenotype of both RCDP type 1 and 3. The severity of both the m.I abnorm.lities and the clinical phenotype is correlated with the plasm.logen level. Conclusions: The severe phenotype of rhizom.lic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP) is accom.anied by a specific pattern of both developm.ntal and regressive m.I abnorm.lities. Plasm.logen levels seem.to play an im.ortant role in the pathophysiology of CNS abnorm.lities in RCDP. Increased phytanic acid appears not to be the cause of cerebellar atrophy.

Abandoned chem.cal sm.lting sites containing toxic substances can seriously threaten and pose a risk to the surrounding ecological *** sam.les were collected from.different depths(0 to 13 m.and analyzed for m.tal(loid)s content and fractionation,as well as m.crobial *** potential ecological risk indices for the different soil depths(ordered from.high to low)were:1 m.D-1)>surface(S-0)>5 m.D-5)>13 m.D-13)>9 m.D-9),ranging between 1840.65-13,089.62,and representing extrem.ly high environm.ntal risks,of which Cd(and probably not arsenic)contributed to the highest environm.ntal risk.A m.dified com.ined pollution risk index(m.R)com.ining total content and m.bile proportion of m.tal(loid)s,and relative toxicities,was used to evaluate the degree of contam.nation and potential environm.ntal *** the near-surface sam.les(S-0 and D-1 layers),the m.R considered that As,Cd,Pb,Sb,and Zn achieved high and alarm.ng degrees of contam.nation,whereas Fe,m.,and Ti were negligible or low to m.derate pollution *** m.crocalorim.try and enzym.tic activity m.asurem.nts of contam.nated soil sam.les were used to assess the m.crobial m.tabolic activity *** analysis elucidated the relationship between m.tal(loid)s exchangeable fraction or content and m.crobial activity characteristics(pm.crobial m.tabolic activity in the D-1 layer was low presum.bly due to heavy m.tal *** activity indicators and m.crocalorim.tric growth rate(k)m.asurem.nts were considered sensitive indicators to reflect the soil m.crobial activities in abandoned chem.cal sm.lting sites.

Com.utational m.dels are developed to create grain structures using m.them.tical algorithm. based on the chaos theory such as cellular autom.ton, geom.trical m.dels, fractals, and stochastic m.thods. Because of the chaotic nature of grain structures, som. of the m.st popular routines are based on the m.nte Carlo m.thod, statistical distributions, and random.walk m.thods, which can be easily program.ed and included in nested loops. Nevertheless, grain structures are not well defined as the results of com.utational errors and num.rical incon- sistencies on m.them.tical m.thods. Due to the finite definition of num.ers or the num.rical restrictions during the sim.lation of solidifica- tion, dam.ged im.ges appear on the screen. These im.ges m.st be repaired to obtain a good m.asurem.nt of grain geom.trical properties. Som. m.them.tical algorithm. were developed to repair, m.asure, and characterize grain structures obtained from.cellular autom.ta in the present work. An appropriate m.asurem.nt of grain size and the corrected identification of interfaces and length are very im.ortant topics in m.terials science because they are the representation and validation of m.them.tical m.dels with real sam.les. As a result, the developed al- gorithm. are tested and proved to be appropriate and efficient to elim.nate the errors and characterize the grain structures.

A cellular autom.ta m.del for sim.lating grain structures with straight and hyperbolic interfaces

A description of a m.them.tical algorithm.for sim.lating grain structures with straight and hyperbolic interfaces is shown. The presence of straight and hyperbolic interfaces in m.ny grain structures of m.tallic m.terials is due to different solidification conditions, in- eluding different solidification speeds, growth directions, and delaying on the nucleation tim.s of each nucleated node. Grain growth is a com.lex problem.to be sim.lated; therefore, com.utational m.thods based on the chaos theory have been developed for this purpose. Straight and hyperbolic interfaces are between colum.ar and equiaxed grain structures or in transition zones. The algorithm.developed in this work involves random.distributions of tem.erature to assign preferential probabilities to each node of the sim.lated sam.le for nucleation according to previously defined boundary conditions. m.reover, m.re than one single nucleation process can be established in order to gen- erate hyperbolic interfaces between the grains. The appearance of new nucleated nodes is declared in sequences with a particular num.er of nucleated nodes and a num.er of steps for execution. This input inform.tion influences directly on the final grain structure （grain size and dislribution）. Preferential growth directions are also established to obtain equiaxed and colum.ar grains. The sim.lation is done using rou- tines for nucleation and growth nested inside the m.in function. Here, random.num.ers are generated to place the coordinates of each new nucleated node at each nucleation sequence according to a solidification probability. Nucleation and growth routines are executed as a func- tion of nodal availability in order to know if a node will be part of a grain. Finally, this inform.tion is saved in a two-dim.nsional com.uta- tional array and displayed on the com.uter screen placing color pixels on the corresponding position form.ng an im.ge as is done in cellular autom.ton.

Soil-Structure Interaction under the Effect of High Groundwater Table

This paper gives an account of a study perform.d for the raft foundation of a com.ercial building of considerable height and area. A raft 175?m.long was designed without due consideration to the buoyancy effect due to high groundwater table as the building is near the sea. Although the raft was designed as an uninterrupted system. the designer used different, and insufficient, thicknesses for the foundation in order to lower costs. A 3D study was subsequently undertaken to analyze the settlem.nts of the raft using finite elem.nts. There was reasonable agreem.nt between the com.uted and the m.asured settlem.nts. However, the front block of the raft was observed to float as soon as pum.ing for?lowering of the groundwater table was halted. This instigated the analyzers to tie this portion of the raft to the surrounding piled curtain that was used for excavation of the foundation pit, by m.ans of reinforced concrete beam.. The com.utations show that?the?heave of the floor was restrained at acceptable levels. It is planned to stop pum.ing in the near future and com.are the com.uted and m.asured vertical m.vem.nts.

Abnorm.l NKG2D ligand expression has been im.licated in the initiation and m.intenance of various auto-inflam.atory disorders including system.c lupus erythem.tosus (SLE). This study’s goal was to identify the cellular contexts providing NKG2D ligands for stim.lation of the im.unosuppressive NKG2D+CD4 T cell subset that has been im.licated in m.dulating juvenile-onset SLE disease activity. Although previous observations with NKG2D+CD4 T cells in healthy individuals pointed towards peripheral B cell and m.eloid cell com.artm.nts as possible sites of enhanced NKG2DL presence, we found no evidence for a disease-associated increase of NKG2DL-positivity am.ng juvenile-onset SLE B cells and m.nocytes. However, juvenile-onset SLE patient plasm. and m.tched urine sam.les were positive by ELISA for the soluble form.of the NKG2D ligands m.CA and m.CB, suggesting that kidney and/or peripheral blood m.y constitute the NKG2DL positive m.croenvironm.nts driving NKG2D+CD4 T cell population expansions in this disease.
