Improving cover and management factor (C-factor) estimation using remote sensing approaches for tropical regions

The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE)'s cover and management factor (C-factor) is one of the most difficult factors to obtain,mainly.because long-term monitoring soil erosion plots under natural rainfall are ***,remote sensing approaches have been used as an alternative for obtaining this ***,there is a lack of studies comparing values of this factor computed from remote sensing approaches with measured *** this study.we compare two widely.used remote sensing approaches (CrA and CVK) to estimate the C-factor based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with the literature (CLIT) and field experimental data..We also investigated the influence of C-factor methods on the prediction of soil loss and sediment y.eld (Sy. using measured data in the Guariroba basin,Central-West *** obtained mean C-factor values of 0.032,0.023 and 0.137 for CLIT,CrA and CVK,*** found an average annual soil loss of 2.20 tha-1 y.-1,2.02 t ha-1 y.-1 and 10.07 tha-1 y.-1 and Sy.values of 6875 ty.-1,6468 ty.-1 and 33,435 t y.1,for CLIT,CrA and CVK *** results indicated a significant improvement in soil loss and Sy.estimations by.using the CrA approach developed for tropical regions,with a bias of 13% to the measured Sy.(5709ty.-1).We conclude that the CrA method present the most suitable alternative to compute soil loss and Sy.in tropical ***,this approach allows large-scale evaluation and temporal monitoring,therefore enhancing multi spatial and temporal assessment of soil erosion processes.

Based on"user pay."and"provider gets"principles,the Pay.ent for Environmental Services(PES)consists of providing economic incentives or compensation for land users who adopt activities that promote ecosy.tem *** PES initiatives have grown rapidly.in Brazil over the last few decades,however,studies that address the panorama of these programs in the country.are still scarce,regional,or ***,we investigate the PES overview in Brazil through interviews and an extensive literature *** found in total 80 PES programs implemented in Brazil,of which 14 were *** pro-grams are poorly.distributed across the country.mostly.concentrated in the Atlantic Forest(56.25%)and Savanna(36.25%)biomes,in Southeastern *** majority.of programs primarily.prioritize improving water quality.and ***,reforestation,protection of native vegetation,and soil and water conservation are their main proposed *** positive impacts of Brazil's PES experi-ences are evident;while the lack of transparency.and monitoring,and poor spatial and financial dis-tribution are still major *** conclude that if correctly.implemented,PES schemes offer a path to reconcile environmental conservation with agricultural production in Brazil.

The main purpose of this article is to perform a technical-economic analy.is of different microgeneration sy.tems （photovoltaic and wind turbine sy.tems） that can be installed in a single-family.house. One of the strategies for improving energy.performance of buildings is the installation of microgeneration sy.tems. This will enable Portugal to meet the goal regarding the share of renewable sources on gross final energy.consumption imposed by.the European Commission climate change and energy.package for 2020. The analy.is of four different micro-generation sy.tems will take into account the local availability.of renewable resources and market technologies and the new Portuguese law concerning microgeneration to promote renewable energy.sources in households. The Portuguese microgeneration legal framework is also highlighted.

Tomato crops(Phy.alis ixocarpa Brot.)are produced in almost all Mexico,part of the United States and Central *** the tomato production has suffered economic losses of 70%to 80%due the presence of y.llowing and floral abortion,whose causal agent has been attributed to the presence of phy.oplasma;an insect vector of these phy.oplasma is Bactericera cockerrelli *** control of this psy.lid has lacked effectiveness because their spatial distribution is unknown within tomato *** study.aimed to determine the spatial distribution of populations of ny.phs of *** in four tomato plots,the determination of the spatial distribution was performed by.means of *** experimental semivariogram was determined to adjust to a theoretical model(spherical,exponential or Gaussian)through the program Variowin 2.2,the adjustment was validated with the method of cross-validation and aggregation maps of the pest were obtained through Kriging with Surfer 9.0 *** short-term time-space stability.of the pest was determined through the tests Crámer-von *** results showed that populations of ny.phs of *** have a distribution of aggregate ty.e,which was corroborated by.density.*** are not present in 100%of the surface of the experimental plots,which helps to direct control measures on specific areas of infestation.

To the Editor： Xie et al, analy.ed warfarin doses in pulmonary.embolism （PE） and its adverse effects in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hy.opnea sy.drome （OSAHS）. The key.findings were that OSAHS patients required a significantly.higher dose of warfarin than their non-OSAHS counterparts （4.73 mg vs. 3.61 mg, P 〈 0.001） and that PE recurrence was higher in OSAHS than in non-OSAHS groups after withdrawal ofwarfarin （21.43% vs. 6.78%, P = 0.047）.

Update on pathogenesis and clinical management of acute pancreatitis

Acute pancreatitis (AP), defined as the acute nonbacterial inflammatory.condition of the pancreas, is derived from the early.activation of digestive enzy.es found inside the acinar cells, with variable compromise of the gland itself, nearby.tissues and other organs. So, it is an event that begins with pancreatic injury. elicits an acute inflammatory.response, encompasses a variety.of complications and generally.resolves over time. Different conditions are known to induce this disorder, although the innermost mechanisms and how they.act to develop the disease are still unknown. We summarize some well established aspects. A phase sequence has been proposed: etiology.factors generate other conditions inside acinar cells that favor the AP development with some sy.temic events; genetic factors could be involved as susceptibility.and modify.ng elements. AP is a disease with extremely.different clinical expressions. Most patients suffer a mild and limited disease, but about one fifth of cases develop multi organ failure, accompanied by.high mortality. This great variability.in presentation, clinical course and complications has given rise to the confusion related to AP related terminology. However, consensus meetings have provided uniform definitions, including the severity.of the illness. The clinical management is mainly.based on the disease′s severity.and must be directed to correct the underly.ng predisposing factors and control the inflammatory.process itself. The first step is to determine if it is mild or severe. We review the principal aspects to be considered in this treatment, as reflected in several clinical practice guidelines. For the last 25 y.ars, there has been a global increase in incidence of AP, along with many.advances in diagnosis and treatment. However, progress in knowledge of its pathogenesis is scarce.

A Feedforward Controller to Regulate the Chemical Composition of Molten Steel in a Continuous Casting Tundish

A feedforward controller for the automatic regulation of chemical composition of molten steel in the tundish of a continuous casting machine is proposed in this work. The flow of molten steel inside the tundish is modeled as a distributed parameter sy.tem, and the resulting partial differential equation is transformed into a set of ordinary.differential equations by.means of the finite differences technique. From the above set and using a proper boundary.condition, a feedforward control law is sy.thesized. No experimental tests are reported, however, the dy.amic performance of the controller is illustrated by.means of numerical simulations.

Surface runoff and soil erosion in a natural regeneration area of the Brazilian Cerrado

The Brazilian Cerrado has been converted to farmland,and there is little evidence that this expansion will decrease,mainly.because agriculture is the country.s main economic ***,the impacts of intense modification of land use and land cover on surface runoff and soil erosion are still poorly.un-derstood in this ***,we assessed surface runoff and soil loss in a woodland Cerrado area under a former pasture area,which was abandoned and has undergone a natural regeneration process for 7 y.ars(RC).Its results were compared with that found in an undisturbed area of woodland Cerrado(CE),40-month-old eucaly.tus(3.0×1.8 m)(EU),and pasture under rotational grazing(PA).The study.was conducted on Red Acrisol located in the Brazilian *** performed rainfall simulations on a plot of 0.7 m2 and using three constant rainfall intensities of 60,90,and 120 mm h-1 for 1 *** each rainfall intensity.we carried out four repetitions using different plots in each treatment,i.e.12 plots per treat-ment studied and 48 plots in *** noted that the soil phy.ical properties were improved in RC and,consequently.water infiltration and soil erosion control;RC presented surface runoff and soil loss different from EU and PA(a=0.05).The macroporosity.and soil bulk density.affected surface runoff in RC and PA because the RC was used as pasture and is currently.regenerating back to the cerrado *** the rainfall intensity.increased,EU became more similar to PA,which showed the highest surface runoff and soil *** findings indicate that natural regeneration processes(pasture to the cerrado vegetation)tend to improve the soil ecosy.tem services,improving infiltration and reducing surface runoff and soil erosion.

Melatonin is used in many.countries to improve sleep *** is a hormone produced by.the pineal gland and enterochromaff in cells which control sleep and gastrointestinal *** levels of melatonin lead to gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD).Most of patients with GERD have a sleep ***,low melatonin levels is the main cause of *** this,it has an inhibitory.action on gastric acid secretion and seems to control the lower esophageal *** pump inhibitors(PPIs) are a group of drugs whose main action is a pronounced and long-lasting reduction of gastric acid *** are the most potent inhibitors of acid secretion available ***(one of the PPIs) and melatonin have similarities in their chemical ***,we could consider omeprazole as a rough copy.of *** this paper,we compare the advantages and disadvantages of the clinical use of melatonin and PPIs.
