Salicylic acid (SA) plays an important role in plant immune response, including resistance to pathogens and systemic acquired resistance. Two major components, NONEXPRESSOR OF PATHOGENESIS-RELATED GENES (NPRs) and TGACG motif-binding transcription factors (TGAs), are known to mediate SA signaling, which might also be orchestrated by other hormonal and environmental changes. Nevertheless, the molecular and functional interactions between SA signaling components and other cellular signaling pathways remain poorly understood. Here we showed that the steroid plant hormone brassinosteroid (BR) promotes SA responses by inactivating BR-INSENSITIVE 2 (BIN2), which inhibits the redox-sensitive clade I TGAs in Arabidopsis. We found that both BR and the BIN2 inhibitor bikinin synergistically increase SA-mediated physiological responses, such as resistance to Pst DC3000. Our genetic and biochemical analyses indicated that BIN2 functionally interacts with TGA1 and TGA4, but not with other TGAs. We further demonstrated that BIN2 phosphorylates Ser-202 of TGA4, resulting in the suppression of the redox-dependent interaction between TGA4 and NPR1 as well as destabilization of TGA4. Consistently, transgenic Arabidopsis overexpressing TGA4-YFP with a S202A mutation displayed enhanced SA responses compared to the wild-type TGA4-YFP plants. Taken together, these results suggest a novel crosstalk mechanism by which BR signaling coordinates the SA responses mediated by redox-sensitive clade I TGAs.

Out-of-plane microneedle structures are widely used in various applications such as transcutaneous drug delivery and neural signal recording for brain machine *** work presents a novel but simple method to fabricate high-density silicon(Si)microneedle arrays with various heights and diverse cross-sectional shapes depending on photomask pattern *** proposed fabrication method is composed of a single photolithography and two subsequent deep reactive ion etching(DRIE)***,a photoresist layer was patterned on a Si substrate to define areas to be etched,which will eventually determine the final location and shape of each individual ***,the 1st DRIE step created deep trenches with a highly anisotropic etching of the Si ***,the photoresist was removed for more isotropic etching;the 2nd DRIE isolated and sharpened microneedles from the predefined trench *** on diverse photomask designs,the 2nd DRIE formed arrays of microneedles that have various height distributions,as well as diverse cross-sectional shapes across the *** these simple steps,high-aspect ratio microneedles were created in the high density of up to 625 microneedles mm^(-2)on a Si *** tests showed a small force as low as~172μN/microneedle is required for microneedle arrays to penetrate the dura mater of a mouse *** demonstrate a feasibility of drug delivery application,we also implemented silk microneedle arrays using molding *** fabrication method of the present study is expected to be broadly applicable to create microneedle structures for drug delivery,neuroprosthetic devices,and so on.

The Relationship of Learning Strategies and Styles on Language Learning

This study investigates the relationship of learning strategies and styles on language learning and shows how different learning materials according to students＇ adoptions of them. And it especially focuses on analyzing and understanding how M.I. （Multiple Intelligences）, as a strategy, influence on language learning. For research method, this study adopts the observations of the classroom teachings and interviews with the students. As a result, the findings show that first, there are not enough clear explanation on relationship of strategies and styles, but overall, certain factors as verbal-linguistic and interpersonal intelligences help language learners improve their language ability. Second, the use of learning strategies has a positive effect on language learning. Third, the use of learning strategies can be trained and encouraged in language classrooms. Fourth, the appropriate learning materials should be selected according to learners＇ strategies and styles so that learning is more effective and successful. Finally, the implications of these findings are discussed.

Comparative Study on the Recognition of English-Only Classes by Native English Speakers in Korean and Taiwan Residents Elementary Schools

This study is a comparative research regarding English-only classes by native English speakers at the elementary schools in two countries, Korea and Taiwan. These two countries tried to introduce as well as adapt English education and policy toward globalization. First of all, the two initiated mandatory elementary English education and then acknowledged the significance of English CLT （Communication Language Teaching）. Thus, curriculum and policy for English education based on globalization oriented to the introduction of English native speakers and English-only classes. Based on these situations, Korea created EPIK （English Program in Korea） and NEST （Native English Speaking Teacher） respectively for inviting English native teachers. In the similar educational conditions, the recognitions of elementary school students of Korea and Taiwan regarding on English-only classes by native English speakers showed the relatively meaningful results. Compared with Taiwan Residents students, first, Korean students have greater ability in understanding of English-only class. Second, Korean students respond that native English speaking teachers＇ class helps them improve English better. Third, Korean students tend to use Korean and English together to improve their understanding. Fourth, Korean students respond English-only class reduces fear about English. Fifth, Korean students experience less difficulties in communicating with native English speaking teachers due to culture differences. Korean elementary students relatively have a higher understanding rate about native English speaking teacher＇s class.

Design of Out-of-Band Protocols to Transmit UHDTV Contents in the CATV Network

The goal of an UHDTV is to broadcast digital video contents which is 16 times the pixel resolution of HDTV. As the resolution is increased, the UHDTV requires a transmission technology to support very high data transfer rate. In this paper, we propose two out-of-band protocols to transmit UHDTV contents in a CATV network: an OOB-based protocol and a DSG-based protocol. The former may be a short term solution which is well suitable for a traditional CATV network and the letter may be a long term solution which is adoptable for a CATV network equipped with DOCSIS functionalities. In order to transfer 200 Mbps UHDTV contents, proposed protocols use a channel bonding mechanism which combines several QAM channels. We propose CATV network architectures to support an UHDTV service with a channel bonding mechanism, and design the format of messages to share the information of bonded channels between a headend and a STB. We develop an OPNET simulator and ascertain successful transmission of UHDTV contents.

Efficacy of Seprafilm~ graft with adhesiolysis in experimentally induced lid adhesion in rabbits

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of Seprafilm transplantation following adhesiolysis for preventing postoperative readhesion and improving surgical outcomes. METHODS:Primary blepharoplasty was carried out on both eyelids of 18 albino rabbits. After 2 weeks, a new skin incision was made, and adhesiolysis was performed on both eyelids. The rabbits were categorized into two groups, one with adhesiolysis alone in the left eyelid (control group), and the other with adhesiolysis with a Seprafilm graft in the right eyelid (Seprafilm group). The degrees of inflammation and fibrosis were examined with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Masson’s trichrome stains. Expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was also immunohistochemically examined. RESULTS:Eyelid examination immediately after the operation revealed mild swelling and hemorrhage in both groups, but these symptoms resolved after 1 week-2 weeks, and eyelid shape had recovered completely in both groups. Microscopic assessments demonstrated that the Seprafilm group showed less inflammation and fibrosis than the control group. The Seprafilm group also exhibited fewer α-SMA-positive cells than the control group. CONCLUSION:Based on these findings, we conclude that Seprafilm graft with adhesiolysis is an effective method for preventing postoperative readhesions after eyelid surgery.

Forest structure and carbon dynamics of an intact lowland mixed dipterocarp forest in Brunei Darussalam

Tropical forests play a critical role in mitigating climate change because they account for large amount o terrestrial carbon storage and ***,there are many uncertainties associated with the estimation o carbon *** estimated forest structure and carbon dynamics along a slope（17.3°–42.8°）and to assess the relations between forest structures,carbon dynamics,and slopes in an intact lowland mixed dipterocarp forest,in Kuala Belalong,Brunei *** biomass,basa area,stand density,crown properties,and tree family composition were measured for forest *** rate,litter production,and litter decomposition rates were also measured for carbon *** crown form index and the crown position index were used to assess crown properties,which we categorized into five stages,from very poor to *** living biomass,basal area and stand density were 261.5–940.7 Mg ha-1,43.6–63.6 m2ha-1and 6,675–8400 tree ha-1,*** average crown form and position index were 4,which means that the crown are mostly symmetrical and sufficiently exposed for *** mean biomass growth rate,litter production,litter decomposition rate were estimated as11.9,11.6 Mg ha-1a-1,and 7.2 g a-1,*** growth rate was significantly correlated with living biomass,basal area,and crown *** form appeared to strongly influence living biomass,basal area and biomass growth rate in terms of light ***,basal area,stand density,crown properties,and biomass growth rate did not vary by slope or tree family *** results indicate that carbon accumulation by tree growth in an intact lowland mixed dipterocarp forest depends on crown *** of any effect of tree family composition on carbon accumulation suggests that the main driver of biomass accumulation in old-growth forests of Borneo is not species-specific characteristics of tree species.

Analysis and modeling of highway truck traffic volume variations during severe winter weather conditions in Canada

This paper investigates the impact of cold and snow on daily and hourly truck traffic volume on a primary highway in Alberta, Canada. This research is based on a detailed case study of 5 years of weigh-in-motion data recorded continuously at Leduc site on Highway 2A. Influence of the winter conditions on truck type distribution is examined by classifying trucks into single-unit trucks, single-trailer, and multi-trailer units. It is evident from the study that proportion of the three truck classes in the total truck traffic remained essentially stable over the study period （2005-2009）. Dummy-variable regression models are used to relate daily and hourly truck traffic volume with snowfall and categorized cold as independent variables. The statistical significance of all the independent variables used in the model is established by conducting tests such as R2, F test, incremental F test, and t test. The study results suggested that the truck volume is not significantly affected by the normal snowfall or the typical cold temperatures, i.e., average daily snowfall about less than 15 cm or temperatures higher than -25 ℃ are not likely to affect the truck traffic patterns. It is believed that the findings of this study can benefit highway agencies in developing programs and policies for efficient monitoring of truck traffic throughout the year and snow removal during the winter season in Canada.
