Structure and regeneration status of mangrove patches along the estuarine and coastal stretches of Kerala, India

This study presents the structural characteristics and regeneration potential of mangrove patches in the estuarine and coastal areas of Kerala, a tropical maritime state in India. Field surveys were carried out at 46 selected sites during August 2015 to May 2016. In each site, the vegetative structure and regeneration status were assessed using the quadrat method. Altogether 219 quadrates were laid out and a total of 13 true mangrove species, belonging to 5 families and 8 genera, were recorded. The total tree density and stand basal area of the study region was1678.08/ha and 20.33 m^2/ha respectively. The low basal areas indicate the reduced structural development in mangroves. Of the 13 tree species, Avicennia constitutes 56%of the total Important Value Index(IVI) and Avicennia officinalis represents 41% of the IVI in Kerala, followed by Avicennia marina(15%), Rhizophora mucronata(15%),Sonneratia alba(8%) Rhizophora apiculata(7%) and Excoecaria agallocha(7%). The diameter at breast height(DBH) in the study area revealed that 47% of the tree species came under the 1–10 cm DBH class. Total sapling and seedling density in Kerala was 2238.35 and 3232.42 individuals/ha respectively. Density of young plants(seedlings ? saplings) was only 31% greater of tree density and varied from 3–63%, which indicates poor regeneration potential. The Maturity index value(MIV) and complexity index(Ic) value of mangroves were 18.30 and 109.81 respectively. However, the low Ic value(\ 10) observed in seven out of ten coastal districts indicated poor structural development of mangroves in Kerala. Therefore, locationspecific conservation and management measures, guided by the knowledge on spatial distribution and habitat requirements of mangrove varieties should be taken to preserve the mangrove diversity of Kerala.

Swift Iron Ion Irradiation Induced Disorder in Crystalline Silicon

The p-type silicon wafers have been irradiated with 70 MeV 56Fe5+ ions for various fluences varying from 1 ? 1012 to 5 ? 1014 ions cm-2 at room temperature. Irradiated samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet-visible and X-ray diffraction techniques. Near infrared studies showed the presence of irradiation induced defect state in the band gap which traps the free carriers and causes the decrease in optical band gap and free carrier concentration after irradiation. The interference fringe observed in the reflectance spectra indicates the existence of irradiated layer with different refractive index as of bulk silicon. Optical depth profile of sample irradiated with ion fluence 3 ? 1014 cm-2 showed that the irradiation induced damage/defects which vary with depth of the sample. The XRD studies revealed the presence of strain in the irradiated samples at higher ion fluence. The UV reflectance spectra revealed that the intensity of reflectance peak at 364 nm and 274 nm decreases with increasing ion fluence, indicating the increase of surface roughness after irradiation.

A total of thirty three(33)endophytic fungi including sterile mycelia were isolated from the leaf,stem and roots of medicinally important aromatic plant Gaultheria *** of the fungi belonged to the phylum *** total percentage colonization frequency(%CF)of each endophytic fungal species was calculated of which Juxtiphoma eupyrena showed highest colonization frequency(20.14%)in the leaf whereas Globisporangium irregulare was found to have highest colonization frequency in the stem(14.58%)and in the roots,Trichoderma viride was observed to have the highest colonization frequency of 21.43%.Diversity of endophytic fungi in the roots was found to be higher as compared to the other plant tissues.

Tyrosine kinase receptor B isoforms alter App and BACE1 endogenous levels independently of BDNF

Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels and signaling via the tyrosine receptor kinase B (TrkB) have been shown to be altered in Alzheimer’s Disease. In addition, it has been reported that the isoforms of TrkB can differentially affect metabolism of amyloid precursor protein (App). Conversely, Ab, a neurotoxic cleavage product of App, has been shown to impair TrkB/ BDNF signaling. Therefore, we investigated whether the changes observed in App metabolism were due to the isoform-specific effects of TrkB on either App expression, and/or on the expression and activity of ADAM10 and BACE1. Since BDNF levels are decreased in AD, we focused on BDNF independent effects of the TrkB isoforms. We found that TrkB FL increases endogenous App levels in both HEK293 and SH-SY5Y naive cells. We did not find an increase in ADAM10 activity in HEK293 cells, but an increase in BACE1 levels. Additionally, we have found that TrkB FL is able to increase NFAT3 mediated transcriptional activity and we suggest that this causes transcriptional activation of the BACE1 promoter.

The AFB1 auxin receptor controls the cytoplasmic auxin response pathway in Arabidopsis thaliana

The phytohormone auxin triggers root growth inhibition within seconds via a *** members of the TIR1/AFB auxin receptor family,AFB1 has a primary role in this rapidresponse. However, the unique features that confer this specific function have not been *** we show that the N-terminal region of AFB1, including the F-box domain and residues thatcontribute to auxin binding,is essential and sufficient for its specific role in the rapid response. Substitutionof the N-terminal region of AFB1 with that of TIR1 disrupts its distinct cytoplasm-enriched localizationand activity in rapid root growth inhibition by auxin. Importantly, the N-terminal region of AFB1 isindispensable for auxin-triggered calcium influx, which is a prerequisite for rapid root growth ***, AFB1 negatively regulates lateral root formation and transcription of auxin-induced genes,suggesting that it plays an inhibitory role in canonical auxin signaling. These results suggest that AFB1may buffer the transcriptional auxin response, whereas it regulates rapid changes in cell growth thatcontributeto rootgravitropism.

[背景]尽管目前有研究表明微血管浸润（microvascular invasion,MVI）阳性与KI67、CD34和影像学特征之间存在相关性,但研究结果并不完全一致,且与MVI不同分级之间是否相关,目前尚无研究。此外,我们前期研究显示血清炎性指标与Edmondson病理分级存在相关性,是否与MVI分级相关尚不清楚.[目的]因此本研究探讨肝细胞癌中MRI影像学特征、血清炎症指标、KI67、CD34和病理组织学分级与MVI分级的相关性。[方法]收集2017年1月到2022年1月术后病理证实为肝细胞肝癌,且具有病理分级和MVI分级的患者血清炎症标志物（ALR、NLR、ApRI）、免疫组化指标（CD34、KI67）、术前MRI影像特征。研究对象分为MVI 0级、1级以及2级三组。采用Wilcoxon秩和检验及卡方检验比较三组患者的组间差异,再进一步行Spearman秩相关分析。[结果]最终纳入173名患者,MVI0级（71例）、MVI1级（57例）和MVI2级（45例）。结果显示CD34（p=0.030）和组织学分级（p=0.002）在不同MVI分级间存在统计学差异,而三组患者的性别、KI67以及肝叶受累程度、瘤内出血、瘤内坏死、肿瘤生长模式、肿瘤数量、炎性指标等指标无统计学差异（p＞0.05）。进一步Spearman秩相关分析显示组织学分级与MVI分级之间存在低度相关（r=0.266,p＜0.001）。[结论]尽管KI67与肿瘤增殖相关,但与MVI不同分级间未见相关性;CD34蛋白是一种高度糖基化修饰的跨膜糖蛋白,和肿瘤的血管生成、毛细血管密度密切相关,不同MVI分级间CD34存在差异。Edmondson病理分级与MVI分级存在低度正相关,组织学分级越高,MVI的分级也越高。

通过催化化学气相沉积法合成了多壁碳纳米管(MW CNTs)。在相转移催化剂甲基三辛基氯化铵存在下,以高锰酸钾(KM nO4)为氧化剂在室温下对MW CNTs进行功能化处理。采用傅立叶变化红外光谱、热失重分析分析法对功能化MW CNTs进行表征。借助超声波降解法将功能化MW CNTs分散在二氯甲烷中形成悬浮液,然后将其悬浮液逐滴加至搅拌的聚乙烯醇溶液中形成海绵状微球。扫描电子显微镜(SEM)显示:形成的海绵状微球由松散缠结的MW CNTs构成,直径为50μm～150μm。该微球可望应用于轻型吸能涂料,催化剂以及电子学领域。

A report on infection dynamics of inducible clindamycin resistance of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from a teaching hospital in India
