It is unknown how ungulate physiological responses to environmental perturbation influence overall population ***,neonatal physiological responses remain poorly studied despite the importance of neonatal survival to population ***(GC)hormones potentially facilitate critical physiological and behavioral responses to environmental ***,elevated GC concentrations over time may compromise body condition and indirectly reduce *** evaluated baseline salivary cortisol(CORT;a primary GC in mammals)concentrations in 19 wild neonatal white-tailed deer(Odocoileus virginianus)in a northern(NS)and southern(SS)area in *** ranking survival models consisting of variables hypothesized to influence neonate survival(***,sex),the probability of neonate survival was best explained by CORT concentrations,where elevated CORT concentrations were associated with reduced survival probability to 12 weeks of *** concentrations were greater in the SS where predation rates and predator densities were *** the first evaluation of baseline CORT concentrations in an ungulate neonate to our knowledge,this is also the first study to demonstrate CORT concentrations are negatively associated with ungulate survival at any life *** hormones could provide a framework in which to better understand susceptibility to mortality in neonatal white-tailed deer.

Rate analysis of sorption of Ce^3＋,Sm^3＋,and Yb^3＋ions from aqueous solution using Dowex 50W-X8 as a sorbent in a continuous flow reactor

Kinetic analysis of removal of three rare earth elements metals, Ce, Sm, and Ybions from aqueous solutions in a continuous flow fixed bed reactor using Dowex 50 W-X8 ion-exchange resin was conducted. The performance of the fixed bed sorption was evaluated using the concept of the sorption breakthrough process. Parameters characteristic of a fixed bed sorption such as breakthrough times,saturation times, critical reactor lengths, and lengths of mass transfer zone were inferred from the metal ion concentration breakthrough curves. The sorption capacity of Dowex 50 W-X8 ion-exchange resin for Ce3+, Sm3+, and Yb3+ are 191, 252, and 294 mg/g, respectively. The sorption kinetics were evaluated using a zero-order, first-order and second-order reaction models. The kinetics of the sorption process follows a zero-order model which has not been reported before. The rate constants of sorption using the zero-order kinetic model are obtained. Two different analysis were conducted to identify whether the diffusion is intraparticle or film diffusion. Both analysis confirms that the film diffusion is the controlling mechanism in reactor bed.

Anion structural effects on interaction of rare earth element ions with Dowex 50W X8 cation exchange resin

The effect of the anion in the original rare earth element（REE） solution on the reversible ion exchange of Ce nitrate and Ce sulfate with the Dowex 50 W X8 was investigated using attenuated total reflection infrared（ATR-IR） spectroscopy, continuous flow reactor studies coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy（ICP-MS）, and density functional theory（DFT）. The simulated IR spectrum at the DFT B3 LYP/6-31 G（d） level was compared to the experimental results to characterize the IR spectrum, molecular interactions, and bonding of the ion exchanged species. The continuous liquid flow reactor studies show a capacity of 0.72 mmol/g sorbent for the Ce nitrateand 0.96 mmol/g sorbent for the Ce sulfate with the Dowex 50 W X8. The flow reactor studies reveal the type of solute anion（SO_4^（（2-）） or NO_3^（（-））） associated with the REE during cation exchange significantly affects the sorption capacity of the Dowex 50 W X8 ion exchange resin. The calculated REE binding energy（BE） and the DFT optimized structures suggest that the differences in sorption capacity is the result of the formation of different types of partially ionexchanged Ce_2^（（3＋））2 SO_4^（（2-）） and Ce^（（3＋）） 3 NO_3^（（-））. These results suggest that the solute anion affects the equilibrium constants of the Dowex resin by the formation of a charged layer capable of retaining the counterion. Modifying the sulfonic acid site（H＋） in the Dowex 50 W X8 with the NH_4~＋ counterion does not affect the sorption capacity and retention times of the Ce nitrate and Ce sulfate species. These results suggest that the counterions and co-ions having a finite size, may limit access to the Dowex sulfonate active site where the type of REE cation as a nitrate or sulfate in solution may significantly modify the sorption capacity of the ion exchange resin. Similar results are obtained during sorption with nitrates and sulfates of Sm and Yb.

Assessment of Dynamic Downscaling of the Extreme Rainfall over East Asia Using a Regional Climate Model

This study investigates the capability of the dynamic downscaling method （DDM） in an East Asian climate study for June 1998 using the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University-National Center for Atmospheric Research non-hydrostatic Mesoscale Model （MM5）.Sensitivity experiments show that MM5 results at upper atmospheric levels cannot match reanalyses data,but the results show consistent improvement in simulating moisture transport at low *** downscaling ability for precipitation is regionally *** the monsoon season over the Yangtze River basin and the pre-monsoon season over North China,the DDM cannot match observed *** Northwest China and the Tibetan Plateau （TP）,where there is high topography,the DDM shows better performance than *** monsoon evolution processes over East Asia,however,are much closer to observational data than *** convection scheme has a substantial impact on extreme rainfall over the Yangtze River basin and the pre-monsoon over North China,but only a marginal contribution for Northwest China and the *** surface parameterizations affect the locations and pattern of rainfall *** 10-day re-initialization in this study shows some improvement in simulated precipitation over some sub-regions but with no obvious improvement in *** setting of the location of lateral boundaries （LLB） westward improves performance of the *** the entire TP in the western model domain improves the DDM performance in simulating precipitation in most *** addition,a seasonal simulation demonstrates that the DDM can also obtain consistent results,as in the June case,even when another two months consist of no strong climate/weather events.

The design of alloys for use in gas turbine engine blades is a complex task that involves balancing multiple objectives and *** alloys must be ductile at room temperature and retain their yield strength at high temperatures,as well as possess low density,high thermal conductivity,narrow solidification range,high solidus temperature,and a small linear thermal expansion *** Integrated Computational Materials Engineering(ICME)methods are not sufficient for exploring combinatorially-vast alloy design spaces,optimizing for multiple objectives,nor ensuring that multiple constraints are *** this work,we propose an approach for solving a constrained multi-objective materials design problem over a large composition space,specifically focusing on the Mo-Nb-Ti-V-W system as a representative Multi-Principal Element Alloy(MPEA)for potential use in next-generation gas turbine *** approach is able to learn and adapt to unknown constraints in the design space,making decisions about the best course of action at each stage of the *** a result,we identify 21 Pareto-optimal alloys that satisfy all *** proposed framework is significantly more efficient and faster than a brute force approach.

The electron microscope provides numerous insights into physics, from demonstrations of fundamental quantummechanical principles to the physics of imaging and materials. It reveals the atomic and electronic structure of key regionssuch as defects and interfaces. We can learn the underlying physics governing properties, and gain insight into how tosynthesize new materials with improved properties. Some recent advances and possible future directions are discussed.
