Assessing Potential Earthquake Loss in Me′rida State, Venezuela Using Hazus

The focus of the Hazus earthquake model has been largely U.S. centric due to a lack of standardized building-infrastructure data formats applicable *** a combined effort between FEMA Region VIII and the Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela, the present study uses the Hazus 2.1 software to simulate earthquake loss estimations for Venezuela. Population totals and demographic distributions were developed using Oak Ridge National Labs Landscan 2008 population data and the census 2011 for Venezuela. The accuracy of the model was further enhanced for Me′rida State, located in western Venezuela, by collecting, incorporating, and developing region and specific inventories including soil maps, liquefaction and landslide susceptibility studies, demographic data, and building inventory information. We used USGS Shake Maps scenarios for two potential earthquake events with peak ground accelerations proposed within Performance Based Seismic Engineering of Buildings, VISION 2000 recommendations. The region has not witnessed an earthquake with a magnitude greater than M 7 in the last120 years. Given the historical record of seismicity and the seismotectonics in the region, it becomes increasingly important to understand the potential implications from moderate to large earthquakes in Me′rida State, Venezuela.

Investigating urban expansion patterns aids in the management of urbanization and in ameliorating the socioeconomic and environmental issues associated with economic transformation and sustainable *** Harmonized Defense Meteorological Satellite Program-Operational Line-scan System(DMSP-OLS)and the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership-Visible Infrared Imagery Radiometer Suite(NPP-VIIRS)Nighttime Light(NTL)data,this paper investigated the characteristics of urban landscape in West *** the harmonized NTL data,spatial comparison and empirical threshold methods were employed to detect urban changes from 1993 to *** examined the rate of urban change and calculated the direction of the urban expansion of West Africa using the center-of-gravity method for urban *** addition,we used the landscape expansion index method to assess the processes and stages of urban growth in West *** accuracy of urban area extraction based on NTL data were R^(2)=0.8314 in 2000,R^(2)=0.8809 in 2006,R^(2)=0.9051 in 2012 for the DMSP-OLS and the simulated NPP-VIIRS was R^(2)=0.8426 in 2018,by using Google Earth images as *** results indicated that there was a high rate and acceleration of urban landscapes in West Africa,with rates of 0.0160,0.0173,0.0189,and 0.0686,and accelerations of 0.31,0.42,0.54,and 0.90 for the periods of 1998–2003,2003–2008,2008–2013,and 2013–2018,*** expansion direction of urban agglomeration in West Africa during 1993–2018 was mainly from the coast to ***,cities located in the Sahel Region of Africa and in the middle zone expanded from north to ***,the results showed that the urban landscape of West Africa was mainly in a scattered and disordered’diffusion’process,whereas only a few cities located in coastal areas experiencing the process of’coalescence’according to urban growth phase *** study provides urban planners with relevant insights for the urban expansion character

Water quality sondes have the advantage of containing multiple sensors,extended deployment times,high temporal resolution,and telecommunication with stakeholder accessible data ***,sondes that are part of buoy deployments often suffer from typically being fixed at one *** water treatment plants are interested in water quality at a depth of the water intake and other stakeholders(*** and swimmers)are interested in the surface,we examined whether a fixed depth of approximately 1 m could cause over-or under-estimation of cyanobacterial *** sampled the vertical distribution of cyanobacteria adjacent to a water quality sonde buoy in the western basin of Lake Erie during the summers of 2015–2017.A comparison of buoy cyanobacteria RFU(Relative Fluorescence Unit)at 1 m to cyanobacteria chlorophyll a(chla)measured throughout the water column showed occurrences when the buoy both under and overestimated the cyanobacteria chl a at specific *** differences between buoy measurements and at-depth grab samples occurred during low wind speeds(4.5 m/sec)resulted in better agreement between the buoy and at-depth *** wind speeds 12 hr before sample collection decreased the difference between the buoy and at-depth samples for high wind speeds but not low *** suggest that sondes should be placed at a depth of interest for the appropriate stakeholder group or deploy sondes with the ability to sample at various depths.

Background: Costal fracture surgical is still a debate, therefore we shall select between early and delay surgical management. Case Report: We are reporting two cases of post road traffic clash delay ribs fractures osteosynthesis involving a 63-year-old man with multistage fractures on the left and pulmonary pinning of one of the costal arches, complicated by a homolateral haemothorax and a 41-year-old man with a bilateral flail chest. Conclusion: The simple postoperative course and the immediate postoperative improvement in the patient’s clinical respiratory condition enabled us to discuss the time frame for management, in this case the indication for early or later surgery.

Since their introduction in the 1960s, cochlear implants （CIS） have undergone several transformations, ulti- mately positioning themselves as the best-performing neural prosthesis available today. They have also been recognized as a unique tool for studying the potential protective effects of patterned electrical stimulation on the developing auditory system, with results from animal models often changing the manner in which CIs are used clinically to deliver auditory information to the brain （Moore and Shannon, 2009）. From the development of the first successful commercial single-channel device, they have evolved into multi-channel devices that are part of the national health programmes of several coun- tries. From the limited speech information provided by the early, rudimentary cochlear implants, these devices are now in a position to deliver intelligible speech infor- mation to the auditory system, largely due to advances in signal processing. Concerted efforts from several dis- ciplines, including engineering, acoustics, neurobiology and otolaryngology have ensured that the continued development of CI technology has resulted in signifi- cant benefits to individuals with profound sensorineural hearing loss.

Introduction:Climate change is expected to impose significant tension on the geographic distribution of tree ***,tree species range shifts may be delayed by their long life spans,capacity to withstand long periods of physiological stress,and dispersal *** could theoretically break this biological inertia by killing forest canopies and facilitating species redistribution under changing *** investigated the capacity of wildfire to modulate climate-induced tree redistribution across a montane landscape in the central Rocky Mountains under three climate scenarios(contemporary and two warmer future climates)and three wildfire scenarios(representing historical,suppressed,and future fire regimes).Methods:Distributions of four common tree species were projected over 90 years by pairing a climate niche model with a forest landscape simulation model that simulates species dispersal,establishment,and mortality under alternative disturbance regimes and climate ***:Three species(douglas-fir,lodgepole pine,subalpine fir)declined in abundance over time,due to climate-driven contraction in area suitable for establishment,while one species(ponderosa pine)was unable to exploit climate-driven expansion of area suitable for *** fire frequency accelerated declines in area occupied by douglas-fir,lodgepole pine,and subalpine fir,and it maintained local abundance but not range expansion of ponderosa ***:Wildfire may play a larger role in eliminating these conifer species along trailing edges of their distributions than facilitating establishment along leading edges,in part due to dispersal limitations and interspecific competition,and future populations may increasingly depend on persistence in locations unfavorable for their establishment.

Measuring the Effectiveness of the Chinese Innovation System:A Global Value Chain Approach

This paper study argues that some disruptive new trends are surfacing with the emergence of new technologies,which makes an efficient and effective R&D and innovation system even more relevant for any country to compete at a global *** this backdrop,the study tries to measure the effectiveness of the Chinese innovation system,using the“R&D spending as percentage of GDP”as the input variable and the“contribution of R&D and related business activities to the value‐added manufacturing exports”as the output *** on a 59‐country sample in the OECD‐WTO TiVA database,the regression results show a significant and positive correlation between the two *** findings also complement with other existing empirical and qualitative studies in this *** overall findings show that China has achieved significant efficiency and effectiveness in its innovation system compared with many other countries;in fact,since 2009,the efficiency has ***,it still lags behind the major global *** means China still has some room to improve in order to transform its increasing inputs in R&D and technology innovation into commensurate *** situation calls for further improvements in its innovation ecosystem.
