c.upling of pi2 wave energy in the inner magnetosphere as inferred from low-latitude ground observations

Taking advantage of high time-resolution (1 s) geomagnetic.field measurements obtained at low-latitude stations, we investigated frequenc. differenc.s of pi2 pul-sations between the dayside and the nightside. Firstly, we examined two pi2 c.ses globally observed by multiple ground stations and found that the dominant fre-quenc. peaks at the dayside showed latitudinal dependenc., i.e., the higher (lower) frequenc. peak was predominant at lower (higher) latitude. We also notic.d that the dominant pi2 frequenc. on the nightside was apparently higher than that on the dayside. We argue that the multiple frequenc. peaks observed on the ground are harmonic. of a plasmaspheric.c.vity resonanc. mode (c.M) and that the latitu-dinal dependenc. of the dominant frequenc. peaks may result from the energy c.upling between the c.M and field line resonanc. (FLR) oc.urred in the near Earth spac.. We also argue that the frequenc. differenc. between the dayside and the nightside c.uld be c.used by the reason that a higher harmonic.was observed in the nightside plasmasphere but was not effec.ively observed in the dayside. In addition, we statistic.lly examined 829 pi2 events that were simultaneously re-c.rded at Kakioka (KAK, Maglat=27.2°) and Jic.marc. (JIc. Maglat=0.0°), the two stations separated by ～10 h in loc.l time (LT) and one of them (JIc. is loc.ted at the dip equator. We found that the pi2 frequenc. observed at KAK on the nightside was higher than that observed at JIc.on the dayside on average. After investigating the oc.urrenc. histogram of the frequenc. differenc. (△f=fJIc.fKAK) for the events si-multaneously observed at KAK and JIc. we found that c.ose to half of the events had the identic.l frequenc. (|△f |c.l results are c.nsistent with the fac.s reflec.ed by c.se studies.

Rec.nt experiments have demonstrated Rabi-osc.llations, superradiant pulses and stimulated emission from negatively-c.arged nitrogen-vac.nc.(NV;) c.nter spins in mic.owave resonators. These phenomena witness the kind of c.llec.ive and strong c.upling whic. has been the prerequisite for observation of superradiant lasing in the optic.l frequenc. regime. In this artic.e, we investigate the possibility to employ c.herenc., present in both the c.llec.ive NV-spin ensemble and the mic.owave field, to ac.ieve a superradiant maser. Our c.lc.lations show that a superradiant maser with a linewidth below millihertz c.n be ac.ieved with moderate kilohertz inc.herent pumping of over 10;spins at room temperature. We show that the superradiant masing prevails in the presenc. of inhomogeneous broadening, and we present numeric.l and analytic.l studies of the dependenc. of the phenomenon on the various physic.l parameters.

Extrac.ion of 17β-estradiol in water using non-imprinted polymer submic.on partic.es in membrane filters

17β-Estradiol （E2） is an endoc.ine disrupting c.emic.l of harm to both animals and human beings at a low c.nc.ntration level （ng/L）. It c.nnot be c.mpletely removed by wastewater treatments, and is often detec.ed in both environment and drinking waters. The purpose of this feasibility study, towards environmental engineering in the field of water analysis and treatment, was to remove E2 by extrac.ion using non-imprinted polymer （NIp） submic.on partic.es. Experimental results showed that 0.5 mg/L of E2 c.uld be c.mpletely extrac.ed by adding 10 mg of NIp partic.es direc.ly into 10 mL of water. However, the extrac.ion effic.enc. dec.eased to 64% for 100 mL of water. prefilling the NIp partic.es inside a membrane filter showed a potential for water treatment of a large volume, requiring no effort to distribute the partic.es uniformly in the water. High extrac.ion effic.enc. （80 ± 10）% for E2 was ac.ieved for 100 mL of water. A total mass of 0.29 mg E2 was extrac.ed from 1000 mL of water c.ntaining 0.8 mg/L E2 （by using only 10 mg of NIp partic.es）. Both effic.enc. and mass c.pac.ty c.n be inc.eased, by sc.ling up the amount of NIp partic.es, towards environmental engineering applic.tions.

Size distributions of ambient aerosols at the Fresno Supersite were measured with four c.mmerc.ally available sc.nning mobility partic.e sizers （SMpS）. TSI nano, TSI standard, Grimm, and MSp instruments were c.lloc.ted at the Fresno Supersite and partic.e size distributions were measured c.ntinuously from August 18 through September 18, 2005. For partic.es with diameters between 10 and 200 nm, differenc.s among hourly-average ambient partic.e c.nc.ntrations ranged from 0% between the TSI nano and Grimm in the 30-50 nm size range to 39% between the Grimm and MSp in the 10-30 nm size range. MSp c.nc.ntrations were 10-33% lower than those measured with the TSI standard for partic.es smaller than 200 nm. The TSI nano and TSI standard agreed to within 5% in their overlapping size range （10-84 nm）. The TSI nano and Grimm agreed to within 40% for 5-10 nm partic.es.

Free c.nvec.ion flow between two vertic.l parallel plates with transverse sinusoidal injec.ion of the fluid at the stationary plate and its c.rresponding removal by c.nstant suc.ion through the plate in uniform motion has been analyzed. Due to this type of injec.ion veloc.ty, the flow bec.mes three-dimensional. Analytic.l expressions for the veloc.ty, temperature, skin fric.ion and rate of heat transfer were obtained. The important c.arac.eristic. of the problem, namely the skin fric.ion and the rate of heat transfer are disc.ssed in detail with the help of graphs.

Wavelet-Based Mixed-Resolution c.ding Approac. Inc.rporating with SpT for the Stereo Image

With the advanc.s of display tec.nology, three-dimensional(3-D) imaging systems are bec.ming inc.easingly popular. One way of stimulating 3-D perc.ption is to use stereo pairs, a pair of images of the same sc.ne ac.uired from different perspec.ives. Sinc. there is an inherent redundanc. between the images of a stereo pairs, data c.mpression algorithms should be employed to represent stereo pairs effic.ently. The proposed tec.niques generally use bloc.-based disparity c.mpensation. In order to get the higher c.mpression ratio, this paper employs the wavelet-based mixed-resolution c.ding tec.nique to inc.rporate with SpT-based disparity-c.mpensation to c.mpress the stereo image data. The mixed-resolution c.ding is a perc.ptually justified tec.nique that is ac.ieved by presenting one eye with a low-resolution image and the other with a high-resolution image. psyc.ophysic.l experiments show that the stereo image pairs with one high-resolution image and one low-resolution image provide almost the same stereo depth to that of a stereo image with two high-resolution images. By c.mbining the mixed-resolution c.ding and SpT-based disparity-c.mpensation tec.niques, one referenc. (left) high-resolution image c.n be c.mpressed by a hierarc.ic.l wavelet transform followed by vec.or quantization and Huffman enc.der. After two level wavelet dec.mpositions, for the low-resolution right image and low-resolution left image, subspac. projec.ion tec.nique using the fixed bloc. size disparity c.mpensation estimation is used. At the dec.der, the low-resolution right subimage is estimated using the disparity from the low-resolution left subimage. A full-size rec.nstruc.ion is obtained by upsampling a fac.or of 4 and rec.nstruc.ing with the synthesis low pass filter. Finally, experimental results are presented, whic. show that our sc.eme ac.ieves a pSNR gain (about 0.92dB) as c.mpared to the c.rrent bloc.-based disparity c.mpensation c.ding tec.niques.

Using an Elec.ronic.Nose to Rapidly Assess Grandlure c.ntent in Boll Weevil pheromone Lures

Samples of pheromone lures used in boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis （Boheman）, eradic.tion programs are routinely analyzed by Gas c.romatography （Gc. to ensure lures are adequately dosed with grandlure, the synthetic.aggregation phero- mone produc.d by male weevils. However, preparation of Gc.samples is tedious, time c.nsuming, and requires a moderate level of experienc.. We examined the use of a c.mmerc.ally-available elec.ronic.nose （e-nose） for rapidly assessing the grandlure c.ntents of lures. The e-nose was trained to rec.gnize headspac. c.llec.ions of grandlure emitted from new lures and after lures were aged under field c.nditions for 4 d, 7 d, 10 d, and 14 d. Based on c.oss-validation of the training set, the e-nose was 82% ac.urate in disc.iminating among the different age c.asses of lures. Upon sampling headspac. c.llec.ions of pheromone from a different set of field-aged lures, the e-nose was 〈50% ac.urate in disc.iminating 4 d, 7 d, and 10 d aged lures from the other age c.asses of lures. However, the e-nose identified new and 14 d aged lure samples with 100% ac.urac.. In light of these findings, e-nose tec.nology shows c.nsiderable promise as an alternative approac. for rapidly assessing the initial grandlure c.ntents of lures used in boll weevil eradic.tion programs.
