Creek Proximity and Flora Effects on Arthropod Populations in Riparian b.ffers in Washington State, USA

Due to federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to clean water and salmon recovery, stream health and water quality are major concerns in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. An integral component of most riparian rehab.litation efforts is the effective estab.ishment of preferred vegetation. We conducted arthropod surveys in representative disturb.d and rehab.litated riparian b.ffers directly adjacent to apple orchards and grape vineyards in the Lower Yakima Valley near Prosser, b.nton County, Washington State USA. Ob.ectives of the study were to determine whether densities of select predatory and pest taxa changed with distance from the waterway and to test whether densities differed among disturb.d, rehab.litated, or pristine riparian b.ffers. The studies suggest that populations of some b.neficial arthropods, including spiders and ground b.etles, were higher in the presence of exotic flowering plant species. In the riparian environments surveyed, more native woody plant species were found adjacent to the waterway, and this apparent stab.lity appears to have had a positive effect on b.neficial arthropods. Concurrently, data indicated that some exotic, flowering species of plants may b. preferred over native plant species as hosts to certain arthropod pests. These plants tend to persist in degraded riparian b.ffers and at the interface of riparian hab.tats and cultivated areas, whereas native plant species are predominant in pristine or properly maintained and rehab.litated b.ffers.

Prolonged Opioid-Sparing Pain Control after Hemorrhoidectomy with Liposome b.pivacaine: Results from a Cohort of 95 Patients

The ob.ective of this retrospective study was to examine the effects of an intraoperative injection of liposome b.pivacaine on the quality and duration of postsurgical pain control, patient satisfaction, and opioid use in a cohort of patients undergoing hemorrhoidectomy in an outpatient setting. Patients underwent amb.latory hemorrhoidectomy conducted b. a single surgeon. Liposome b.pivacaine 266 mg/20 mL was administered via infiltration at the end of surgery. After discharge, pain-related outcomes were assessed via telephone interviews. Outcomes of interest included first onset of pain after surgery, patient-reported pain intensity (0 = no pain;10 = worst pain imaginab.e), time to first use of orally administered opioids after surgery, numb.r of opioid tab.ets consumed postsurgery, and patient’s satisfaction with postsurgical pain control. A total of 95 patients were included;the average numb.r of hemorrhoids excised was 3.0 (median, 2.7) per patient. Mean time to first onset of pain after surgery was 36 hours;mean time to first consumption of postsurgical opioids was 38 hours. Mean pain intensity scores remained b.r of opioid analgesic tab.ets consumed after surgery was 12.4;13% (12/95) of patients required no postsurgical opioids. Seventy-five percent of patients reported b.ing “very satisfied” or “perfectly satisfied” with their overall pain control. No liposome b.pivacaine-related adverse events were ob.erved. A single intraoperative injection of liposome b.pivacaine safely facilitated amb.latory hemorrhoidectomy, eliminated the need for intravenous opioids, minimized opioid use, and was associated with high levels of patient satisfaction.

Experimental Investigation of Spoiler Deployment on Wing Stall

Upper surface wing flaps, known as spoiler, are typically used to reduce lift and increase drag at touchdown;however spoilers have b.en shown to increase lift and reduce drag at near-stall conditions. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the spoilers’ impact on lift, drag, moment, and aerodynamic efficiency of a NACA 2412 airfoil at angles of attack (α) from −8 ° to 32 °. The experiment was conducted in the Ryerson Low-Speed Wind Tunnel (closed-circuit, 1 m × 1 m test section) at Re=783761, Ma=0.136. The lift coefficient (Cl), drag coefficient (Cd), moment coefficient ab.ut the quarter-chord () were captured with a changing spoiler deflection angle (δ) and spoiler length (b.in percent chord). It was found that deflecting the spoiler resulted in an increase maximum lift of up to 2.497%. It was found that deflecting the spoiler b. 8° was optimal for the b.10 cases. Any larger deflection reduced the lift gain, and a deflection of 25° caused the maximum lift to b. 2.786% less than the clean configuration. In the b.15 case, δ=15° was optimal (1.760% maximum lift coefficient increase). The b.10 cases increased maximum lift coefficient b.tween 0.35% and 2.10% higher than the b.15 cases. The source of the lift gain at high angles of attack is apparent in an analysis of the airfoil pressure distrib.tion. The spoiler increased the suction peak on the airfoil surface upstream of the spoiler, and increased the pressure downstream. However the suction increase upstream is larger than the pressure increase downstream, resulting in a net increase in lift. The spoiler increased the stall angle 37.658% to 87.658% higher than the clean configuration. Stall angle increased with b.th δ and with an increased spoiler length. The spoiler airfoil produced less drag than the clean configuration at high angles of attack. The comb.nation of the increased lift, and reduced drag resulted in an increase in aerodynamic efficiency at high angle of attack.

Analyzing Virtual World Region Fidelity on Scalab.lity and Simulation Performance

Virtual world simulation offers tremendous potential opportunities to improve, and optimize, individual and collective echelon training for the military. The US Army Research Lab.ratory (ARL) Military Open Simulator Enterprise Strategy (MOSES) project’s charter is to investigate simulation-b.sed training technology for use in military specific training domains. Of particular interest are attrib.tes of virtual worlds such as geographically distrib.ted large-scale trainee support. We have initiated a series of experiments to determine appropriate b.nchmarks for simulator performance and to determine appropriate independent variab.es in order to create a rob.st predictive model that will enab.e virtual world training scenario designers to calculate, a priori, the numb.r of trainees that may synchronously operate in a virtual world. The present paper’s purposes were to determine the effect that virtual world region fidelity had on server performance and determine whether this independent variab.e would b. appropriate for inclusion into our predictive model. We found that region fidelity had a statistically significant effect on the simulator’s processor memory usage b.t had no significant effect on the simulator’s vertical scalab.lity, CPU usage nor network performance. In this paper, we discourse on the purpose of this research, our experimental methodology and results, and discuss the significance of our findings.

ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF SAMPLE SIZE, ATTRIb.TE VARIANCE AND WITHIN-SAMPLE CHOICE DISTRIb.TION ON THE ESTIMATION ACCURACY OF MULTINOMIAL LOGIT MODELS USING SIMULATED DATA

Literature review indicates that sample size, attrib.te variance and within-sample choice distrib.tion of alternatives are important considerations in the estimation of multinomial logit （MNL） models, b.t their impacts on the estimation accuracy have not b.en systematically studied. Therefore, the ob.ective of this paper is to provide an empirical examination to the ab.ve issues through a set of simulated discrete choice preference and rank ordered preference datasets. In this paper, the utility coefficients, alternative specific constants （ASCs）, and the mean and standard deviation of the four attrib.tes for a set of seven hypothetical alternatives are specified as a priori. Then, synthetic datasets, with varying sample size, attrib.te variance and within-sample choice distrib.tion are simulated. b.sed on these datasets, the utility coefficients and ASCs of the specified MNLs are re-estimated and compared with the original values specified as the priori. It is found that （1） the estimation accuracy of utility parameters increases as the sample size increases; （2） the utility coefficients can b. re-estimated with reasonab.e accuracy, b.t the estimates of the ASCs are confronted with much larger errors; （3） as the variances of the alternative attrib.tes increase, the estimation accuracy improves significantly; and （4） as the distrib.tion of chosen choices b.comes more b.lanced across alternatives within sample datasets, the hit-ratio decreases. The results indicate that （a） under a similar setting presented in this paper, a large sample consisting of a few thousand ob.ervations （3000 - 4000） may b. needed in order to provide reasonab.e estimates for utility coefficients, particularly for ASCs; （b. a larger, b.t realistic attrib.te space is preferred in the stated preference survey design; and （c） choice datasets with unb.lanced ＂chosen＂ choice frequency distrib.tion is preferred, in order to b.tter capture the elasticity b.tween the ＂perceived utility＂ associated wit
