Background:p53 and DIrAS3 are tumor suppressors that are frequently silenced in *** this study,we sought to determine whether the concurrent re-expression of p53 and DIrAS3 could effectively induce head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC)cell ***:CAL-27 and SCC-25 cells were treated with Ad-DIrAS3 and rAd-p53 to induce re-expression of DIrAS3 and p53 *** effects of DIrAS3 and p53 re-expression on the growth and apoptosis of HNSCC cells were examined by TUNEL assay,flow cytometric analysis and *** effects of DIrAS3 and p53 re-expression on Akt phosphorylation,oncogene expression,and the interaction of 4 E-BP1 with eIF4 E were determined by real-time PCr,Western blotting and immunoprecipitation *** ability of DIrAS3 and p53 re-expression to induce autophagy was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy,LC3 fluorescence microscopy and Western *** effects of DIrAS3 and p53 re-expression on HNSCC growth were evaluated by using an orthotopic xenograft mouse ***:TUNEL assay and flow cytometric analysis showed that the concurrent re-expression of DIrAS3 and p53 significantly induced apoptosis(Pric analysis revealed that DIrAS3 and p53 reexpression significantly inhibited proliferation and induced cell cycle arrest(Prrent re-expression of DIrAS3 and p53 down-regulated signal transducer and activation of transcription 3(STAT3)and upregulated p21WAF1/CIP1 and Bax(PrAS3 and p53 re-expression also inhibited Akt phosphorylation,increased the interaction of eIF4 E with 4 E-BP1,and reduced the expression of c-Myc,cyclin D1,vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),fibroblast growth factor(FGF),epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFr)and Bcl-2(Preover,the concurrent re-expression of DIrAS3 and p53 increased the percentage of cells with GFP-LC3 puncta compared with that in cells treated with control adenovirus(50.00%±4.55%vs.4.67%±1.25%,P<

The election of Donald Trump can be partially understood in the context of the rise of authoritarian populist, nationalist, and anti-globalist movements throughout the world. Unlike previous American presidents in the modern era, however, Donald Trump had no previous political experience and emerged from media culture and the business world, rather than the world of party politics. In this paper, I will focus on the assault on globalization in the Trump campaign, look at his administration and actions as president, and raise questions concerning whether or not he has betrayed his anti-globalist followers and is pursing business-as-usual for global, corporate capitalism---or something else. This investigation also leads us into engaging the Trump campaign/administration connections with russia and the role of russia and global computer networks in Election 2016, making Election 2016 the first US election deeply shaped by global political forces and the Interuet, new media, and social networking.

The notion of time(Tiμη, normally translated "honour") is a key concept when it comes to thinking about virtues, roles, and duties in ancient Greek ethics and society, both in popular and in philosophical terms. This discussion concentrates on the work of the fifth-century historian, Herodotus, where the idea of time as the fulfilment of a specific role in society takes on particular and interesting inflections. In Herodotus, as in Greek generally, time covers both the esteem that one receives from others and the claim to esteem that the individual him- or herself brings to bear in social interaction. Thus time is both "deference" and "demeanour"(to use Goflman's terminology). As a quality of an individual that commands others' respect, time also encompasses the roles that are bound up with one's status. roles and offices express, attract, and demand time, but such demands are normally constrained by reciprocal respect for the time of others. The office of the Persian king, however, appears at first sight to involve unconditional claims to recognition respect, powerful drives towards appraisal respect (in DarwalPs terminology), and only limited acknowledgement of either ethical norms or others claims as potential limitations to regal self-assertion. Closer inspection, however, reveals that the values of mutual respect that underpin the freedom enjoyed by citizens of Greek poleis are also felt by Herodotus to ground claims to freedom and in dependence on the part of those poleis themselves, claims that the historian9s narrative suggests are ultimately upheld by the gods and embedded in the structure of the cosmos itself.

The challenges of building on an island demanded elements of green building *** there are no utilities for life support systems such as heat,hot water,and electricity,the design approach needed to be comprehensive and *** were commissioned in 2004 to design a 4,200-square-foot vacation house on a small island off Branford *** island,less than one acre,is only 10 feet above sea level at the maximum high *** challenges were not only to produce enough energy as efficiently as possible,but to build a structure resistant to storm surges potentially 11 feet above sea level and 3 foot waves that could inundate the *** home has seen three severe storms since it was constructed,and indeed,the ocean did completely inundate the island,leaving only the home and the mechanical building to stand alone in the open and violent *** island prior to 1938 had a luxurious mansion built on it constructed of masonry and by conventional *** 1938 hurricane swept over Long Island Sound in that year making a direct hit to the *** mansion was leveled,leaving only debris,and for 67 years there was no meaningful building on the island other than a storage shack and lean-to over the remains of the *** only life support brought to the island was a water *** island,named Sumac Island,is only a half mile off the southern Connecticut shoreline in Branford,just a few miles west of a chain of islands called the Thimbles *** owner bought this island in part for the spectacular views-and of course the privacy any island gives-but he knew it presented many challenges,mainly generating its own *** required sophisticated mechanical systems to be built-off the grid(see Figure 1).

The scope of paternal contributions during early embryonic development has long been considered limited. Dramatic changes in chromatin structure throughout spermatogenesis have been thought to leave the sperm void of complex layers of epigenetic regulation over the DNA blueprint, thus leaving the balance of that regulation to the oocyte. However, recent work in the fields of epigenetics and male factor infertility has placed this long-held, and now controversial dogma, in a new light. Elegant studies investigating chromatin and epigenetic modifications in the developing sperm cell have provided new insights that may establish a more critical role for the paternal epigenome in the developing embryo. DNA methylation, histone tail modifications, targeted histone retention and protamine incorporation into the chromatin have great influence in the developing sperm cell. Perturbations in the establishment and/or maintenance of any of these epigenetic marks have been demonstrated to affect fertility status, ranging in severity from mild to catastrophic. Sperm require this myriad of chromatin structural changes not only to serve a protective role to DNA throughout spermatogenesis and future delivery to the egg, but also, it appears, to contribute to the developmental program of the future embryo. This review will focus on our current understanding of the epigenetics of sperm. We will discuss sperm-specific chromatin modifications that result in genes essential to development being poised for activation early in embryonic development, the disruption of which may result in reduced fecundity.

Biomass harvest may eventually be conducted on over 100 000 000 ha of US crop and forest lands to meet federally-mandated targets for renewable biofuels. Such largescale land use changes could profoundly impact working landscapes and the arthropod communities that inhabit them. We review the literature on dedicated biofuel crops and biomass harvest from forests to look for commonalities in arthropod community responses. With expanded biofuel production, existing arthropod pests of biofuel crops will likely become more important and new pests will emerge. Beneficial arthropods will also be influenced by biofuel crop habitats, potentially altering the distribution of pollination and pest control services to the surrounding landscape. Production of biofuel crops including initial crop selection, genetic improvement, agronomic practices, and harvest regimes will also influence arthropod communities. In turn, arthropods will impact the productivity and species composition of biomass production systems. Some of these processes have the potential to cause landscape-level changes in arthropod community dynamics and insect- vectored plant diseases. Finally, changes in arthropod populations and their spatiotemporal distribution in the landscape will have impacts on consumers of insects at higher trophic levels, potentially influencing their population and community dynamics and producing feedbacks to arthropod communities. Given that dedicated biofuel crops and intensified biomass harvest from forests are still relatively uncommon in North America, as they increase, we anticipate ＇predictably unpredictable＇ shifts in arthropod communities and the ecosystem services and functions they support. We suggest that research on arthropod dynamics within biofuel crops, their spillover into adjacent habitats, and implications for the sustainability of working landscapes are critical topics for both basic and applied investigations.

The focus of the Hazus earthquake model has been largely U.S. centric due to a lack of standardized building-infrastructure data formats applicable *** a combined effort between FEMA region VIII and the Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela, the present study uses the Hazus 2.1 software to simulate earthquake loss estimations for Venezuela. Population totals and demographic distributions were developed using Oak ridge National Labs Landscan 2008 population data and the census 2011 for Venezuela. The accuracy of the model was further enhanced for Me′rida State, located in western Venezuela, by collecting, incorporating, and developing region and specific inventories including soil maps, liquefaction and landslide susceptibility studies, demographic data, and building inventory information. We used USGS Shake Maps scenarios for two potential earthquake events with peak ground accelerations proposed within Performance Based Seismic Engineering of Buildings, VISION 2000 recommendations. The region has not witnessed an earthquake with a magnitude greater than M 7 in the last120 years. Given the historical record of seismicity and the seismotectonics in the region, it becomes increasingly important to understand the potential implications from moderate to large earthquakes in Me′rida State, Venezuela.
