Purpose: We tested the psychom.tric properties of the Germ.n version of the King’s Health questionnaire and describe the scoring procedure. m.terial and m.thods: A total of 145 patients treated for stress incontinence com.leted the Germ.nl anguage King’sHealth Questionnaire and the SF-36 before and after treatm.nt. A psychom.tric analysis of the instrum.nt was perform.d, determ.ning reliability, validity and responsiveness of the King’s Health questionnaire. Results: The subscales of the King’s Health Questionnaire showed a good internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients between 0.76 and 0.86. For the Germ.n version we defined a new subscale for overactive bladder. This subscale also showed a good internal consistency. The criterion validity m.asured on clinical param.ters showed statistically significant correlations between severity of incontinence and several King’s subscales: Incontinence Im.act (r = 0.22, p = 0.013), Personal Relationships(r = 0.24, p = 0.006) and Physical Lim.tations (r = 0.22, p = 0.010). Regarding responsiveness statistically significant changes before and after therapy were found in the subscales: Incontinence Im.act, Physical Lim.tations, Social Lim.tations, Personal Relationships, Em.tional Problem., and Sleep and Energy Disturbances. Conclusion: The Germ.n version of the King’s Health Questionnaire showed good psychom.tric properties and can be used in clinical trials and in clinical practice for the evaluation of treatm.nts and their im.act on urinary incontinence.

A 31- year- old m.n presented with a long history of rhino conjunctivitis and sneezing that lasted from.m.rch to m.y. The m.n kept a cham.leon (Cham.eleo calyptratus) as a pet and reported about recurrent urticarial lesions, erythem., and itch after skin contact with the anim.l. The reactions started within a few m.nutes and were restricted specifically to the contact sites with the anim.l’ s claws. No com.arable reactions occurred in other subjects. Allergy testing confirm.d allergy to hazel, alder, birch, and ash pollen, and additionally revealed sensitization to house dust m.te, cat, and Ficus benjam.na. Apparently the contact derm.titis originated from.passive transfer of Ficus benjam.na allergens to the patient’ s skin by the reptile which habitually clim.ed on a big Ficus benjam.na tree in the patient’ s hom., thereby contam.nating its claws with the plant’ s allergenic m.lky sap. Careful exam.nation revealed strong perforation of m.ny leaves by the pointed claws. The patient denied respiratory sym.tom. from.Ficus benjam.na and intolerance of Ficus- associated fruits.
