We report our experience with a synchronous case of gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST) and intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct(IPNB) in anelderly woman with neurofibromatosis type 1(NF-1). A 72-year-old woman presented with a 2-mo history of right upper abdominal pain unrelated to diet and indigestion. Fourteen years earlier, she had been diagnosed with NF-1, which manifested as café au lait spots and multiple nodules on the skin. Computed tomography(CT) revealed a multilocular low-density mass with septation, and mural nodules in the right hepatic lobe, as well as a 1.7-cm-sized well-demarcated enhancing mass in the third portion of the duodenum. The patient subsequently underwent right hepatectomy and duodenal wedge resection. We present here the first report of a case involving a synchronous IPNB and GIST in a patient with NF-1. The potential benefits of generating and using transgenic cattle range from improvements in agriculture to the production of large quantities of pharmaceutically relevant proteins. Previous studies have attempted to produce transgenic cattle and other livestock by pronuclear injection and somatic cell nuclear transfer, but these approaches have been largely ineffective; however, a third approach, lentivirus-mediated transgenesis, has successfully produced transgenic livestock. In this study, we generated transgenic （TG） Korean native cattle using perivitelline space injection of viral vectors, which expressed enhanced green fluorescent protein （EGFP） systemically. Two different types of lentiviral vectors derived from feline immunodeficiency virus （FIV） and human immunodeficiency virus （HIV） carrying EGFP were injected into the perivitelline space of MII oocytes. EGFP expression at 8-cell stage was significantly higher in the FIV group compared to the HIV group （47.5% ± 2.2% v.s. 22.9% 4± 2.9%）. Eight-cell embryos that expressed EGFP were cultured into blastocysts and then transferred into 40 heifers. Ten heifers were successfully impregnated and delivered 10 healthy calves. All of these calves expressed EGFP as detected by in vivo imaging, PCR and Southern blotting. In addition, we established an EGFP-expressing cell line from TG calves, which was followed by nuclear transfer （NT）. Recloned 8-cell embryos also expressed EGFP, and there were no differences in the rates of fusion, cleavage and development between cells derived from TG and non-TG calves, which were subsequently used for NT. These results illustrate that FIV-based lentiviruses are useful for the production of TG cattle. Moreover, our established EGFP cell line can be used for additional studies that involve induced pluripotent stem cells.

Several studies have demonstrated that the Chinese herb Gastrodia elata Blume can protect against amyloid beta-peptide （Ap）-induced cell death. To investigate the possible therapeutic effects of Gastrodia elata Blume on Alzheimer＇s disease, we established a rat model of AIzheimer＇s disease by injecting A325-35 into bilateral hippocampi. These rats were intragastrically administered 500 or 1 000 mg/kg Gastrodia elata Blume per day for 52 consecutive days. Morris water maze tests showed that Gastrodia elata Blume treatment significantly improved the spatial memory of Alzheimer＇s disease rats. Congo red staining revealed that Gastrodia elata Blume significantly reduced the number of amyloid deposits in the hippocampus of these rats. Western blot analysis showed that choline acetyltransferase expression in the medial septum and hippocampus was significantly increased by the treatment of Gastrodia elata Blume, while EIIman method showed significant decrease in the activity of acetylcholinesterase in all three regions （prefrontal cortex, medial septum and hippocampus）. These findings suggest that long-term administration of Gastrodia elata Blume has therapeutic potential for Alzheimer＇s disease.

The short release half-life of carbon monoxide(CO)is a major obstacle to the effective therapeutic use of carbon monoxide-releasing molecule-2(CORM-2).The potential of CORM-2-entrapped ultradeformable liposomes(CORM-2-UDLs)to enhance the release half-life of CO and alleviate skin inflammation was investigated in the present ***-2-UDLs were prepared by using soy phosphatidylcholine to form lipid bilayers and Tween 80 as an edge *** deformability of CORM-2-UDLs was measured and compared with that of conventional liposomes by passing formulations through a filter device at a constant *** release profile of CO from CORM-2-UDLs was evaluated by myoglobin *** vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of CORM-2-UDLs were assessed in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages and TPA-induced ear edema model,*** deformability of the optimized CORM-2-UDLs was 2.3 times higher than conventional ***-2-UDLs significantly prolonged the release half-life of CO from 30 s in a CORM-2 solution to 21.6 ***-2-UDLs demonstrated in vitro anti-inflammatory activity by decreasing nitrite production and pro-inflammatory cytokine ***,CORM-2-UDLs successfully ameliorated skin inflammation by reducing ear edema,pathological scores,neutrophil accumulation,and inflammatory cytokines *** results demonstrate that CORM-2-UDLs could be used as promising therapeutics against acute skin inflammation.

Sarcomas are relatively rare malignancies;however, their huge variety and shortage of the effective therapies make this disease face huge challenge for oncology. It is recently shown that hyperthermia could be successfully applied even in high-risk cases in combination with the available gold-standard regiments. Our aim is to present various advanced cases treated with a new hyperthermia method, oncothermia, showing its advantages and feasibility to successfully treat highly advanced sarcomas with curative intent.

Surface channel waveguides(WGs) were fabricated in a monoclinic Tm^(3+):KLu(WO_4)_2 crystal by femtosecond direct laser writing(fs-DLW). The WGs consisted of a half-ring cladding with diameters of 50 and 60 μm located just beneath the crystal surface. They were characterized by confocal laser microscopy and μ-Raman spectroscopy,indicating a reduced crystallinity and stress-induced birefringence of the WG cladding. In continuous-wave(CW)mode, under Ti:sapphire laser pumping at 802 nm, the maximum output power reached 171.1 mW at 1847.4 nm,corresponding to a slope efficiency η of 37.8% for the 60 μm diameter WG. The WG propagation loss was0.7 0.3 d B∕cm. The top surface of the WGs was spin-coated by a polymethyl methacrylate film containing randomly oriented(spaghetti-like) arc-discharge single-walled carbon nanotubes serving as a saturable absorber based on evanescent field coupling. Stable passively Q-switched(PQS) operation was achieved. The PQS60 μm diameter WG laser generated a record output power of 150 m W at 1846.8 nm with η = 34.6%. The conversion efficiency with respect to the CW mode was 87.6%. The best pulse characteristics(energy/duration)were 105.6 nJ/98 ns at a repetition rate of 1.42 MHz.

Background: For the first bite syndrome (FBS), various causes were suggested such as parapharyngeal space surgery, resection of styloid process, carotid endarterectomy, parotid gland tumor, submandibular gland tumor, and upper cervical surgery. Actually, the real cause of FBS is still not clear. Also, suggested methods of treatment for the FBS are botulinum toxin injection, laser tympanic plexus ablation, pharmacologic approach, and no treatment. The results of those treatments were not satisfactory. Aim: The authors tried to find out the adequate method of treatment for the FBS and also tried to figure out pathologic cause of the FBS through observation of the patient response to the treatment. Case Presentation: A 38-year-old male was presented at head and neck surgery clinic with a sharp pain on the left parotid area especially at the first bite of eating food for two days. There was no cause. The patient was given trigger point injections on his left sternocleidomastoid, masseter, and temporal muscles with left mandibular nerve block five times 3 - 4 days apart. Also small amount of oral anticonvulsants were added for four weeks. Before finishing taking oral medication, the pain was gone completely. Conclusion: The authors experienced a case of FBS with no detectable cause, and treated successfully with the methods of trigger point injection, mandibular nerve block, and oral antiepileptic medication.

Fast charge transfer and anti-photocorrosion are two crucial factors for developing efficient, durable photoanodes for photoelectrochemical （PEC） cells. Reduced graphene oxide （RGO） is a promising photoanode element that can provide both of these. In this study, we elucidated the roles of RGO in the charge transfer and surface passivation of photoanodes by the precise design of a RGO-wrapped photoanode and examination of its PEC properties. Arrays of hetero-nanorods （HNRs） with three different designs were fabricated as photoanodes using RGO, CdSe nanoparticles （NPs）, and ZnO nanorods （NRs） as building blocks. CdSe@ZnO HNRs were prepared by decorating ZnO NRs with CdSe NPs. Finite-element analysis and experimental studies demonstrated that in the CdSe@ZnO HNRs, if only the ZnO NRs were wrapped by RGO, the conductivity between CdSe and ZnO was enhanced by RGO to shuttle charges. If RGO only surrounded the outside of the CdSe@ZnO HNRs, the corrosion was slowed owing to the passivation effect of RGO, which increased the electron lifetime of the photoanode. If both CdSe and ZnO were fully wrapped by RGO, the advantages of the two aforementioned cases were both obtained. RGO-wrapped CdSe@ZnO HNRs with position-controlled designs are promising photoanode materials with a high PEC efficiency, and the developed synthesis process can be applied to explore the design and fabrication of next-generation photoanodes using RGO as a buildin~ block.
