Thermal History of Cambrian Burgess Shale-Type Deposits:New Insights from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang and Qingjiang Fossils of South China

Burgess Shale-type deposits provide a wealth of information on the early evolution of *** that are central to understanding the exceptional preservation of these biotas and the paleoenvironments they inhabited may be obscured by the post-depositional alteration due to metamorphism at depth and weathering near the Earth’s *** over 50 Cambrian BST biotas,the Chengjiang and Qingjiang deposits are well known for their richness of soft-bodied taxa,fidelity of preservation,and Early Cambrian *** alteration via weathering has been well-investigated,the thermal maturity of the units bearing the two biotas has not yet been *** we investigate peak metamorphic temperatures of the two deposits using two independent *** gradient analyses demonstrate that the most fossiliferous sections of the Chengjiang were buried at a maximum depth of∼8500 m in the Early Triassic,corresponding to∼300°C,while the type area of the Qingjiang biota was buried at a maximum depth of∼8700 m in the Early Jurassic,corresponding to∼240°*** geothermometer analyses of fossil carbonaceous material demonstrate that peak temperatures varied across localities with different burial *** two productive sections of the Chengjiang biota were thermally altered at a peak temperature of approximately 300°C,and the main locality of the Qingjiang biota experienced a peak temperature of 238±22°*** results from two independent methods are *** BST deposits for which thermal maturity has been documented,the Qingjiang biota is the least thermally mature,and therefore holds promise for enriching our understanding of BST deposits.

Rapid growth in a large Cambrian apex predator

Despite the importance of ontogenetic data on early diverging euarthropods to our understanding of the ecology and evolution of past life, the data are distinctly lacking, as reconstructing life histories of fossil animals is often challenging. Here we report the growth trajectory of frontal appendages of the apex predator Amplectobelua symbrachiata, one of the most common radiodont arthropods from the early Cambrian Chengjiang biota(c. 520 Ma) of China. Analysis of 432 specimens(9.1–137.1 mm length; 1.3–25.6 mm height) reveals that appendages grew isometrically, with an estimated maximum size of the whole animal of c. 90 cm. Individuals grew rapidly compared to extant arthropods, as assessed using the electronic length-frequency analysis(ELEFAN) approach. Therefore, we show that the Cambrian apex predator A. symbrachiata was an extremely fast-growing arthropod, with an unusual life history strategy that formed as part of the escalatory ‘arms race’ that shaped the Cambrian explosion over 500 Ma.

Addressing the Chengjiang conundrum: A palaeoecological view on the rarity of hurdiid radiodonts in this most diverse early Cambrian Lagerstatte

Over one hundred arthropod fossil species have been described from the famous Chengjiang Lagerst?tte(South China, Cambrian Stage 3, ca. 518 Ma) including a diverse assemblage of radiodonts–a group containing Anomalocaris and its relatives. These iconic stem-group euarthropods include some of the largest animals of the time, and some are known from hundreds of specimens. A longstanding conundrum has been the rarity or absence of hurdiids from Cambrian Series 2 Lagerst?tten like Chengjiang. This is because radiodonts are generally common in such deposits and the oldest radiodont ever discovered is a hurdiid. furthermore, this family displays the widest geographic and temporal ranges of all radiodont families, and the highest diversity. Here we document the first hurdiid frontal appendages from Chengjiang, which display unique features within the family and may provide insights for understanding the character evolution of hurdiid appendages. The palaeoenvironmental distribution of hurdiids suggests that the rarity of hurdiids in Chengjiang may be due to a preference for deeper water environments,and the later success of this family from the Wuliuan onwards may relate to their ability to tolerate cooler water temperatures than other radiodont families. The palaeogeographical, palaeoenvironmental, and stratigraphical patterns observed in hurdiids maybe caused in part by the limited distributions of Konservat-Lagerst?tten in the Cambrian as well.

A venomous arthropod in the Early Cambrian Sea

A number of recently evolved animals possess poison glands for feeding and/or ***,examples of such animals are rare in the fossil *** report a fossil arthropod Isoxys curvirostratus from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang biota of *** species is regarded as the oldest known venomous arthropod based on the presence of venomous glands in its head *** adult animal is 2-5 cm long and the body is covered entirely with a *** presence of large stalk eyes and a pair of stout grasping appendages with a terminal spine suggest it was ***,the two pear-shaped,three-dimensionally preserved objects that are present in the head region and at the base of the grasping appendages closely resemble the venom glands of some living arthropods in size,shape,and *** features indicate that the presence of venomous predators could date back 520 million ***,our observations suggest that the feeding strategies and organs adapted for this purpose had already reached a high level of diversity and anatomical sophistication in the Early Cambrian ecosystems.

Dimorphism of Bivalved Arthropod Branchiocaris？ Yunnanensis from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang Biota, South China

The bivalved arthropod Branchiocaris？ yunnanensis Hou, 1987 is redescribed on the basis of new fossil material from the early Cambrian Chengjiang biota, South China. In total, 81 specimens have been examined. The carapace comprises two identical valves, each valve are sub-circular in outline, ranging from 24 mm to 58 mm in length, and from 15 mm to 46 mm in height. The dorsal margin is straight and bears two short cardinal spines. The valve surface is either smooth or ornamented with polygonal reticular structures, which may result from different preservation conditions. Two morphotypes have been recognized based on the presence or absence of a subdorsal swelling of the valve, which is convex dorsolaterally and extends beyond the dorsal margin when it appears. Statistic and ontogenetic analyses show both morphotypes grow isometrically and have the same growth trajectory. Therefore, the two morphotypes are interpreted as dimorphism within the same species. Our results are helpful for investigating the taxonomy and ontogeny of arthropod fossils and suggest that dimorphism might be fairly common in these early arthropods.

The endogenous antioxidant ability of royal jelly in Drosophila is independent of Keap1/Nrf2 by activating oxidoreductase activity

Royal jelly(RJ)is a biologically active substance secreted by the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of worker *** is widely claimed that RJ reduces oxidative ***,the antioxidant activity of RJ has mostly been determined by in vitro chemical detection methods or by external administration drugs that cause oxidative *** RJ can clear the endogenous production of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in cells remains largely ***,we systematically investigated the antioxidant properties of RJ using several endogenous oxidative stress models of *** found that RJ enhanced sleep quality of aging Drosophila,which is decreased due to an increase of oxidative damage with *** supplementation improved survival and suppressed ROS levels in gut cells of flies upon exposure to hydrogen peroxide or to the neurotoxic agent ***,RJ supplementation moderated levels of ROS in endogenous gut cells and extended lifespan after exposure of flies to heat *** deprivation leads to accumulation of ROS in the gut cells,and RJ attenuated the consequences of oxidative stress caused by sleep loss and prolonged ***,RJ prevented cell oxidative damage caused by heat stress or sleep deprivation,with the antioxidant activity in vivo independent of Keap1/Nrf2 *** supplementation activated oxidoreductase activity in the guts of flies,suggesting its ability to inhibit endogenous oxidative stress and maintain health,possibly in humans.

目的对柴胡桂枝干姜汤加减治疗肝郁脾虚型功能性消化不良的实际效果进行研究。方法方便选取2022年1—12月罗定市中医院收治的64例肝郁脾虚型功能性消化不良患者为研究对象,以随机数表法分为两组,每组32例。对照组接受多潘立酮片等常规治疗方法,治疗组在对照组的基础上进行柴胡桂枝干姜汤加减治疗,疗程为4周。比较两组临床疗效、症状积分、功能性消化不良生存质量量表(functional Digestive Dysfunction Quality of Life Scale,FDDQL)总积分和安全性。结果治疗后,治疗组治疗总有效率为96.88%,高于对照组的75.00%,差异有统计学意义(χ^(2)=6.335,P<0.05)。治疗后,治疗组症状积分低于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。治疗组FDDQL积分高于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。两组安全性较好,均无不良反应。结论柴胡桂枝干姜汤加减治疗肝郁脾虚型功能性消化不良效果显著。
