Due to its constant pumping and contraction, the heart requires a substantial amount of energy, with fatty acids (FAs) providing a major part of its adenosine triphosphate (ATP). However, the heart is incapable of making this substrate and attains its FAs from multiple sources, including the action of lipoprotein lipase (LPL). LPL is produced in cardiomyocytes and subsequently secreted to its heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) binding sites on the plasma membrane. To then move LPL to the endothelial cell (EC) lumen, glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored high-density lipoprotein-binding protein 1 (GPIHBP1) attaches to interstitial LPL and transfers it to the vascular lumen, where the LPL is ready to perform its function of breaking down circulating triglycerides (TG) into FAs. The endo-β-glucuronidase heparanase (Hpa) is unique in that it is the only known mammalian enzyme to cleave heparan sulfate (HS), thereby promoting the abovementioned release of LPL from the cardiomyocyte HSPG. In diabetes, it has been suggested that changes in how the heart generates energy are responsible for the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Following moderate diabetes, with the reduction in glucose utilization, the heart increases its LPL activity at the vascular lumen due to an increase in Hpa action. Although this adaptation might be beneficial to compensate for the underutilization of glucose by the heart, it is toxic over the long term, as harmful lipid metabolite accumulation, along with augmented FA oxidation and thus oxidative stress, leads to cell death. This coincides with the loss of a cardioprotective growth factor—namely, vascular endothelial growth factor B (VEGFB). This review discusses interconnections between Hpa, LPL, and VEGFB and their potential implications in DCM. Given that mechanism-based therapeutic care for DCM is unavailable, understanding the pathology of this cardiomyopathy, along with the contribution of LPL, will help us advance its clinical ma

The most frequent cause of treatment failure following surgery for gastric cancer is peritoneal dissemination, mainly caused by the seeding of free cancer cells from the primary gastric cancer, which is the most common type of spread. Unfortunately, there is no standard modality of intraperitoneal free cancer cells detection to predict peritoneal metastasis until now. We reviewed English literature in Pub Med was done using the Me SH terms for gastric cancer, peritoneal wash, and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. All the articles were reviewed and core information was tabulated for reference. After a comprehensive review of all articles, the data was evaluated by clinical implication and predictive value of each marker for peritoneal recurrence. There are still many limitations to overcome before the genetic diagnosis for free cancer cells detection can be considered as routine assay. To make it a reliable diagnostic tool for detecting free cancer cells, the process and method of genetic detection with peritoneal washes should be standardized, and the development of simple diagnostic devices and easily available kits are necessary. Herein, we reviewed the past, present and future perspectives of the peritoneal lavage for the detection of intraperitoneal free cancer cells in patients with gastric cancer.

Electrical capacitance volume tomography (ECVT) was conducted to measure instantaneous gas–solid flow structures in a conical spouted bed. The sensor has 24 electrodes/channels and was used to make three-dimensional measurements of the solid volume fraction. Flow structures in the conical spouted bed were analyzed using quantitative ECVT images. Three-dimensional images of gas–solid flow structures and time-averaged vertical and radial solid volume fraction profiles are presented. Different fluidization regimes in spouted beds were characterized by analyzing pressure fluctuation signals and ECVT images. ECVT was shown to be robust and powerful for the three-dimensional visualization and quantitative measurement of a gas–solid fluidization system.

A commercial product of carbon nano-particles, Cabot MONACH 1300 pigment black （CMPB）, was studied for basic structural information and electrochemical performance in neutral aqueous electrolytes, aiming at applications in supercapacitors. As confirmed by SEM and HRTEM, the CMPB had a hierarchical struc- ture, containing basic 10 nm nano-spheres which combined into ca. 50 nm agglomerates which further aggregated into larger particles of micrometres. The capacitance of this commercial material was found to increase with decreasing the size of hydrous cation （Li＋→Na＋ → K＋）, instead of the cation crystal radius （K＋→ Na＋→Li＋） when coupled with the same anion （cl-）. In electrolytes with the same cation concentration （K＋）, changing the anion from the larger dianion （SO42 ） to the smaller monoanion （cl-） also increased the capacitance at high potential scan rates （〉50 mV/s）. Increasing electrolyte concentration produced expected effect, including raising the electrode capacitance, but lowering the equivalent series resistance （ESR）, charge transfer resistance （CTR）, and the diffusion resistance. At higher temperatures, the CMPB exhibited slightly higher capacitance, which does not agree with the Gouy-Chapman theory on electric double layer （EDL）. A hypothesis is proposed to account for the capacitance increase with temperature as a result of the CMPB opening up some micro-pores for more ions to access in response to the temperature increase.
