Transient liquid-phase to guide multiphase evolution in reactive-hotpressed ZrB_(2)-SiC-ZrC ceramics

In reactive-hot-pressed ZrB_(2)-SiC-ZrC ceramics,ZrO_(2) was found to replace ZrC phase,hence leading to confusion in designing ultra-high-temperature ceramics(UHTCs).We employ high-precision X-ray diffraction and electron microscopies to reassess the phase behavior during entire reaction and densification and to reveal the evolution of multiphase relationship at different stages before reaching the final ZrB2-SiC-ZrO_(2) *** from transient liquid-phase,bulk glassy phase of 15 vol% was found to be constituted of Zr-Si-B-C-O with stable Zr:O ratio,which starts as early as in the intermediate stage to suppress ZrC in favor of SiC *** in phase relations and microstructures results from variation in local transient liquid-phase to develop SiC phase in various modes and *** inferred from the earlier report of phase formation,competing reactions for ZrC and ZrB_(2) phases in the initial stage below 1000℃ were mediated via Zr-O-B-C liquid *** liquid phase was moderated by stable B-O components,as initiated from surface oxides of starting *** picture under a continuous mother liquid phase can unify the reactions and sintering into a collective meltingenucleationegrowth process,which enables and guides the evolution of multiphase relationship through several stages to reach final densification at relatively low temperature with the help of residual oxides.

Effect of mechanical alloying on sinterability and phase evolution in pressure-less sintered TiB_(2)-TiC ceramics

Phase relation and microstructure evolution in the pressure-less sintered TiB_(2)‒TiC ceramics preceded with mechanical alloying were systematically studied by a combination of SEM *** debris from milling balls promotes sintering by dissolving into the TiC phase to achieve dense microstructures at 1600℃.Variation of W solution in TiC grains exposes two types of core-rim structures,with no or more W in dark and white cores respectively but with common medium W in both *** whitecores reveal an exchange reaction between WC and TiC via mechanical alloying to form the Ti_(1-z)W_(z)C phase prior to *** dark-cores inherit from the as-milled TiC power to further enable the reprecipitation of rims from a mixed liquid-phase,which facilitated also the anisotropic growth of TiB_(2) *** dark-cores grow persistently in the second-step at 2000℃ enabled by this liquid-phase,which coarsens the TiB2 grains *** more alloyed phase,sintering was insufficient at 1500℃ with only the surface fluidity from the primary powders,and the second-step sintering increased the fluidity in the liquid-phase to fully densify the binary ***-distribution of the alloyed W by two-step sintering rationalizes the evolution process of the binary microstructures and leads to better understanding of the mechanical behaviors.

Core-rim structures were identified as a common feature in hot-pressed ZrB2-SiC-MC ceramics(M=Nb,Hf,Ta and W)by a combination of X-ray diffraction,scanning and transmission electron *** analyses associate them with the bi-solubility of M in ZrB2 phase,in which transition of solubility across the core/rim boundary is abrupted,signifying their creation via dissolution-reprecipitation process facilitated by transient *** cores were retained from starting powder after surface melting and the rims were grown from the liquid-phase to incorporate more solutes,leaving the residual liquid to turn into ZrC phase with higher solubility of *** propose g-point scheme in the ZrB2-MB2 diagrams to combine the bi-solubility and the core-rim structures into an intra-phase relationship created by sintering,leading further to a hierarchical phase *** temperature dependence of flexural strength in the ZrB2-SiC-MC ceramics varies with MC additions,which can be respectively strengthened by the strain energy created in the core-rim structures and metal segregation to grain boundaries.

Maximum initial primary wave model for low-Froude-number reservoir landslides based on wave theory

The impulse waves induced by large-reservoir landslides can be characterized by a low Froude ***,systematic research on predictive models specifically targeting the initial primary wave is *** the Shuipingzi 1#landslide that occurred in the Baihetan Reservoir area of the Jinsha River in China as an engineering example,this study established a large-scale physical model(with dimensions of 30 m×29 m×3.5 m at a scale of 1:150)and conducted scaled experiments on 3D landslide-induced impulse *** the process in which a sliding mass displaced and compressed a body of water to generate waves,the maximum initial wave amplitude was found to be positively correlated with the sliding velocity and the volume of the *** the increase in the water depth,the wave amplitude initially increased and then *** duration of pressure exertion by the sliding mass at its maximum velocity directly correlated with an elevated wave *** on the theories of low-amplitude waves and energy conservation,while considering the energy conversion efficiency,a predictive model for the initial wave amplitude was *** model could fit and validate the functions of wavelength and wave *** accuracy of the initial wave amplitude was verified using physical experiment data,with a prediction accuracy for the maximum initial wave amplitude reaching 90%.The conversion efficiency(η)directly determined the accuracy of the estimation *** clear conditions for landslide-induced impulse wave generation,estimating the value ofηthrough analogy cases was *** study has derived the landslide-induced impulse waves amplitude prediction formula from the standpoints of wave theory and energy conservation,with greater consideration given to the intrinsic characteristics in the formation process of landslide-induced impulse waves,thereby enhancing the applicability and extensibility of the *** can facilitate the development

Drinking water quality & health risk assessment of secondary water supply systems in residential neighborhoods

Secondary water supply systems(SWSSs)are important components of the water supply infrastructure that ensure residents’drinking water *** are characterized by long detention time,warm temperature,and unreasonable management,which may trigger the deterioration of water quality and increase *** this study,drinking water quality index(DWQI)and health risk assessment(HRA)were selected and modified to quantitatively assess the water quality and health risks of SWSSs in residential *** total,121 seasonal water samples were *** was observed that the water quality was excellent with the DWQI of 0.14±0.04,excluding one sample,which was extremely poor owing to its excessive total bacterial *** HRA results revealed that the health risks were low:negligible non-carcinogenic risk for any population;negligible and acceptable carcinogenic risk for children aged 6–17 and ***,samples revealed higher carcinogenic risk(7.63×10−5±3.29×10−6)for children aged 0–5,and arsenic was the major *** samples had poor water quality and higher health risks,which called for *** further investigate the water quality and health risks of SWSSs,monthly sampling was conducted during *** 24 water samples were qualified in Chinese standard(GB 5749-2022)and characterized as excellent *** HRA results were consistent with the seasonal samples’and the health risks were mainly concentrated in ***,our study provides a suitable framework for water quality security,advice for managers,and references for administrators in other cities.

Efficient cutting path planning for a non-spherical tool based on an iso-scallop height distance field

Iso-scallop height machining means,when machining a freeform surface,the scallop height between any two neighboring tool paths on the surface will be a constant(i.e.,the given threshold),which is preferable among various freeform surface machining strategies due to its high machining efficiency as well as better machine tool’s ***,all the existing iso-scallop height path planning methods pertain to only the ball-end or flat-end types of *** recent years,the non-spherical cutting tool has become more and more popular,especially for five-axis machining of complex freeform surfaces,majorly owing to its non-constant curvature which can be utilized to adaptively fit the tool to the surface to both avoid the local gouging and enlarge the cutting ***,there have been no reported works on iso-scallop height five-axis tool path generation for a non-spherical tool,and,in this paper,we present ***,we first define and construct two fields on the surface to be machined-the collision-free tool orientation field(vector)and the iso-scallop height distance field(scalar).The iso-lines of the scalar field and their associated tool orientation field vectors then naturally serve as potential iso-scallop height five-axis tool paths,and we present a propagation-based algorithm to construct the desired tool path from the *** computer simulation and physical cutting experiments confirm that everywhere on the surface,except maybe near the saddle curves of the scalar filed,the scallop height is exactly the given *** adding the saddle curves as extra tool paths,the final machined surface then is assured of the required scallop height requirement.
