A geometrical definition, fractal dimension, was introduced in this study to evaluate copper adsorption in wood treated with copper-containing preservatives. It is based on the assumption that some copper would compete the hydroxyl groups in wood cell wall with water molecules, and therefore influence the fractal dimension of internal wood surfaces revealed by the moisture adsorption in wood. southern yellow pine (Pinus spp.) specimens were treated with different concentrations of copper ethanolamine (Cu-EA) solution to obtain different copper retention levels. Then the adsorption isotherms of untreated and Cu-EA treated specimens were determined at 4, 15, 30, and 40 ℃ to provide the source data for fractal dimension calculation. The results showed that, at all temperatures, the fractal dimension of the internal wood surfaces had a decreasing trend with increasing copper retention. That is, the internal spaces in wood become 搕hinner?due to the copper adsorption on some hydroxyl groups in wood cell wall. The correlation between the fractal dimension and adsorbed copper ions makes it possible to evaluate the copper adsorption in wood cell wall.

Objective: To investigate the in vivo anti-salmonella activity and the safety of aqueous extract of Euphorbia prostratra(E. prostratra), a plant commonly used in Cameroon by traditional ***: A salmonella typhimurium-infected rat model was used for the study. The physiological, biochemical and histopathological markers of possible side effects of this extract were studied using standard ***: The extract had a significant effect on the number of viable salmonella typhimurium recovered from faeces, and could stop salmonellosis after 8 and 10 days of treatment for male and female rats, respectively, with non-toxic doses. However, the biochemical and histopathological analyses revealed that at relatively high doses(≥ 73.48 mg/kg for female and ≥ 122.71 mg/kg for male) the extract could induce liver damage, as illustrated by a rise of serum transaminases' levels and significant inflammation of the parenchyma and portal *** effects were also observed on the kidneys, as shown by both serum and urinary creatinine,and urinary ***: The overall results indicate that the aqueous extract of E. prostrata has the potential to provide an effective treatment for salmonellosis, including typhoid fever. However,it is necessary to extrapolate these results in large animals, in further studies.

Objective:To explore the immunomodulatory,anti-inflammatory,anti-oxidant and anti-arthritic activity of aqueous and methanolic extracts of Nauclea pobeguinii stem ***:For in vitro assays,the production of reactive oxygen species(chemiluminescence technique),the proliferation of T cells(liquid scintillation counter method),as well as the inhibition of cyclooxygenase,lipoxygenase,protein denaturation,and free radicals[DPPH,ABTs and nitric oxide(NO)inhibition methods]were *** in vivo assays,a polyarthritis model was induced by complete Freund’s adjuvant in *** aqueous and methanolic extracts of Nauclea pobeguinii stem bark were administered orally at 150 and 300 mg/*** 28 days of treatment,the total blood was taken to quantify the hematological parameters and the serum was used to evaluate the biochemical parameters(alanine aminotransferase,aspartate transaminase,phenylalnine ammonialyase,and proteins)and oxidative stress parameters(malondialdehyde,catalase,superoxide dismutase,glutathione and NO),and then the knee joint was removed for histological ***:The extracts of Nauclea pobeguinii significantly reduced the production of intra-and extracellular reactive oxygen species and decreased T cell *** had an inhibitory effect on cyclooxygenase,lipoxygenase,and protein denaturation,and both extracts had antioxidant capacity on DPPH,ABTs and *** extracts alleviated joint inflammation and pain sensitivity after complete Freund’s adjuvant injection,reduced alanine aminotransferase,aspartate transaminase,alkaline phosphatase,NO and malondialdehyde levels,increased protein concentration,superoxide dismutase,catalase and glutathione activity,and restored the cytoarchitecture of the joint after complete Freund’s adjuvant ***:The aqueous and methanolic extracts of Nauclea pobeguinii have immunomodulatory,anti-inflammatory,anti-oxidant and anti-arthritic properties.

Tree Biomass Estimation in Central African Forests Using Allometric Models

Quantifying the tropical forests’ carbon stocks is presently an important component in the implementation of the emerging carbon credit market mechanisms. This calls for appropriate allometric equations predicting biomass which currently are scarce. In this study, we aimed to estimate above- and below-ground biomass and carbon stocks of trees, and to identify the variation in diameter-height allometry of Ipendja mixed terra firme lowland tropical forest’s trees. The study area is located at Ipendja forest management unit (UFA), close to Dongou district (Likouala Department), in Northern Republic of Congo. This study combined forest inventory data of 1340 trees recorded from eight studied plots distributed in two sites, respectively Mokelimwaekili (i.e., Old-growth forest) and sombo (i.e., selective logging forest). Trees measurements were done with rectangular plots, each 25 × 200 m (i.e., 0.5 ha, 5000 m2). In eight studied plots (4 plots per site), only trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm were measured and identified. 1340 trees founded were belonged 145 species and 36 botanical families (n = 733 and n = 607, for sombo and Mokelimwaekili respectively). The analyses were conducted using allometric method for aboveground biomass (AGB) and belowground biomass (BGB) estimations. The results showed that in Ipendja forest ecosystem the mean biomass is built up for AGB (346 Mg·ha-1) as well as for BGB (81.3 Mg·ha-1), with a significant difference between forest types (F = 23.46, df = 7.771, P = 0.001). It was obvious that biomasses in Mokelimwaekili (AGB: 559.7 Mg·ha-1, BGB: 131 Mg·ha-1) were higher than those of sombo (AGB: 291.8 Mg·ha-1, BGB: 68.5 Mg·ha-1). By this study, Ipendja forest ecosystem has clearly variations on the diameter-height relationship and biomass across the plots and the sites.
