Bioefficacy of Plectranthus kirbii Powder and Extracts on Stored Cowpea Pest Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Cowpea seed constitutes an important source of proteins for populations in Sub-Saharan Africa. But this food resource is heavily damaged by cowpea beetle Callosobruchus maculatus. The control of that pest is mainly carried out by using synthetic insecticides. Despite the efficacy of this method, it caused environmental and health problems. Therefore, the search for alternative methods is vivaciously needed. In this issue, the bio-efficacy of Plectranthus kirbii extracts was assessed on C. maculatus regarding adult mortality, suppression of population and grain damage as well as seed viability preservation and repellency. The leaf powder and aqueous extracts of the plant were tested at 2, 4, 8 and 16 g/kg on bruchid adult for toxicity and damage bioassays. Repellency test was carried out using the plant aqueous, methanolic and ethyl acetate extracts at 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mg/cm2. The seed viability was evaluated using seeds preserved for three months at the single concentration of 16 g/kg of each plant extract. Significant mortality of cowpea beetle was induced by the plant aqueous extract and leaf powder. LC50 values decreased with the increasing exposure period, and aqueous extract and leaf powder recorded 33.42 and 9.48 g/kg respectively within 3 days whereas within 5 days, the same extracts in the same order recorded LC50 of 1.31 and 8.73 g/kg respectively. These extracts significantly reduced damage by suppressing almost completely the bruchid population growth. The non-infested grain preserved recorded high grain viability compared to the infested ones. The non-treated infested recorded the lowest germination rate (11.33%). The repellency rate ranged from 38.75% to 83.75%. Ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts were classified as the class III repellent product, while aqueous extract ranged as class IV in repellency. We report herein the case of a 55-year-old man who presented an acute hemolysis following a 6th cycle of FOLFOX regimen for a metastatic colorectal cancer;this patient had previously received 12 cycles in an adjuvant setting. He had presented attenuated signs during the previous cycle. This corresponded to an oxaliplatin-induced immune hemolytic anemia. This unfrequent side effect of oxaliplatin needs to be known in order to avoid severe complications.

AIM To compare the performances of the Barcelona clinic liver cancer(BCLC) nomogram and others systems(BCLC, HKLC, CLIP, NIACE) for survival prediction in a large hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) French *** Data were collected retrospectively from 01/2007 to 12/2013 in five French centers. Newly diagnosed HCC patients were analyzed. The discriminatory ability, homogeneity ability, prognostic stratification ability Akaike information criterion(AIC) and C-index were compared among scoring systems. RESULTS The cohort included 1102 patients, mostly men, median age 68 [60-74] years with cirrhosis(81%), child-Pugh A(73%), alcohol-related(41%), HCV-related(27%). HCC were multinodular(59%) and vascular invasion was present in 41% of cases. At time of HCC diagnosis BCLC stages were A(17%), B(16%), C(60%) and D(7%). First line HCC treatment was curative in 23.5%, palliative in 59.5%, BSC in 17% of our population. Median OS was 10.8 mo [4.9-28.0]. Each system distinguished different survival prognosis groups(P < 0.0001). The nomogram had the highest discriminatory ability, the highest C-index value. NIACE score had the lowest AIC value. The nomogram distinguished sixteen different prognosis groups. By classifying unifocal large HCC into tumor burden 1, the nomogram was less powerful. CONCLUSION In this French cohort, the BCLC nomogram and the NIACE score provided the best prognostic information, but the NIACE could even help treatment strategies.

Background: Feco-oral transmitted diseases (FOTD) remain a public health issue, particularly in developing countries. Data concerning the carriage of Salmonella and intestinal parasites in children are available worldwide but are lacking in Cameroon. This study aimed to determine the asymptomatic carriage of Salmonella and intestinal parasites in children of two primary schools in Yaoundé. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from October 2017 to May 2018 in two primary schools (from rural and urban areas) in the 7th precinct of Yaoundé. Sociodemographic, clinical and paraclinical (rectal swab, direct examination of fresh stool and bacteriological culture on Hektoen medium) data were collected. Results: We included 368 (192 boys) pupils from both schools (184 in each school) with a mean age of 8.99 ± 2.21 years. None of the children was infected by Salmonella spp. Intestinal parasite prevalence was 9.80% (6.52% of children from the urban school vs 13.04% from the rural ones). The intestinal parasite prevalence tended to be higher in girls than in boys (11.98% vs. 7.39%). Among intestinal parasites, protozoa were the most widely found. Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia intestinalis were the most prevalent pathogenic intestinal protozoa (11.11% vs. 25% of all positive stool exams). The helminths, less frequent, were represented by Ascaris lumbicoides and Enterobius vermicularis. Per-Partum Anaemia and Missed Post-Partum Haemorrhage in Low Resources Settings

Background: Post-partum haemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal death throughout the world, and anaemia is one of its indirect causes. Anaemia during labour increases the risk of PPH and may lead to maternal mortality even after moderate PPH. Undiagnosed PPH and post-partum anaemia increases the risk of late maternal death in the community. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of anaemia on admission for labour, the occult early post-partum haemorrhage and the magnitude of post-partum anaemia in a low resource setting. Methods: This was a longitudinal study. We included pregnant women in labour. Haemoglobin concentration was measured on admission (H0), then 24 hours (H24) and 48 (H48) hours later. The post-partum blood loss was estimated by delta haemoglobin, using the criteria of M. Driessen et al. Results: We recruited 245 pregnant women. The mean age was 27.0 ± 6.0 years. The mean hemoglobin concentration was 11.7 ± 1.9 g/dl, the frequency of anaemia was 30.6% and was related to ethnicity (P = 0.042) gestational age (p < 0.001) marital status (p = 0.014) and the inter pregnancy time space (p = 0.001). Twenty-two-point two percent had post-partum haemorrhage among which 40% were undiagnosed. The mean blood loss was 375 ml and post-partum anaemia rate was 44.5%. Conclusion: Anaemia on admission was related to socio-demographic characteristics. The frequencies of anaemia during labour, missed PPH and undiagnosed post-partum anaemia were high. Haemoglobin concentration on admission for labour and after delivery, reliable method to assess PPH should be mandatory, to better identify per and post-partum anemia, and the management of PPH, in low income environments.

We present here experimental results on the optimization of the mega-electronvolt ion source from the target front surface by using relativistic(10^(18)W/cm^(2))interactions with ultra-short laser pulses(50 fs).The source perturbation in the accelerated proton/ion beam was primarily controlled by the addition of a pre-pulse to main pulse contrast *** 2D particle-in-cell simulations agreed well with the observed experimental results for the ion source perturbation and *** work provides insights into ion source perturbations(temporal and spatial)and the need to control them in intense laser–plasma *** results may assist in the efficient guiding of proton/ion beams to the core of fusion fuel or of ions in cancer therapy.

The study of Birimian granitoids is of great importance because it allows us to understand the architecture of the West African crust and the processes that shaped it. In order to contribute to the improvement of knowledge on the geodynamic context of the emplacement of certain granitoids of the West African craton, this article addresses some essential problems of the Birimian, namely distinguishing the real nature of the magmas and the mechanisms that generated this Birimian crust. On the West African craton, there are intrusive granites in volcano-sedimentary furrows, in meta-sedimentary basins and granites that form batholiths separating these structures. To provide an answer to this scientific concern, we conducted a comparative study of the granitoids of the Comoé basin (Tiassalé region) and those of the large batholith of Ferkessédougou (Daloa region). From this study, it appears that these Birimian granitoids have been identified as granites, granodiorites and tonalites in the Tiassalé region while in Daloa, they are assimilated to anatexites and granites. They present very diverse aspects and contexts of emplacement: the granitoids of the Comoé basin have characteristics of type I granite, indicating direct crystallization of mantle magmas in a syntectonic emplacement, while in the Daloa region, some granitoids are magmatic, others migmatitic or metasomatic, reflecting a certain complexity relating to their genesis.

High-Yielding and Carotenoid-Rich Clones Identification among Thirty-One Cassava Clones with Colored Flesh

Cassava is the second most important food crop produced and consumed in Côte d’Ivoire, after yam. White-fleshed varieties, which are low in total carotenoids, are widespread, while coloured-fleshed varieties (yellow to orange), carotenoid-rich, are rare. However, the consumption of carotenoid-rich cassava varieties could help to alleviate health problems related to vitamin A deficiency. This study aims to identify high agronomic performance, carotenoid-rich and versatile cassava varieties among 31 clones introduced from IITA. They were compared to three controls, Bocou2, Yacé and Bonou2, according to agronomic and technological parameters. Results found that out of the 31 clones, six (I082425, I084157, I084563, I085894, I083774 and I070520) were more productive than the control Bocou2 (46.01 ± 14.88 t·ha-1);the clone I083774 had the highest yield (55.88 ± 6.16 t·ha-1). Twenty-one clones had dry matter contents, ranging from 37% to 41%, significantly similar to Yacé control (42.70%). Thirteen clones had highest total carotenoid contents than the control Bocou2. Clones I084157 and I082425 recorded the highest total carotenoid contents with 17.57 ± 1.92 and 18.39 ± 1.19 μg·g-1 respectively. Overall 31 tested clones were fibrous to varying degrees while 27 clones had mild or neutral post-cooking flavours and 17 clones had poor cooking. The clone I084157 is the best compromise of agronomic and technological desired traits.

Background: Diabetes is becoming a serious public health issue with expensive treatment that is less accessible to all patients in least developing countries. The traditional African pharmacopoeia offers accessible and lower cost alternative to diabetics’ treatments. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract of Tetracera potatoria, on diabetes and the prevention of its complications in Wistar rats. In order to evaluate respectively the hypoglycaemic, anti-hyperglycaemic and antidiabetic activities. Methods: an aqueous extract at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg was tested on normal rats and orally hyperglycaemic challenged rats by 10% glucose (3 g/kg), to induce diabetes by intraperitoneal injection of Alloxan at 50 mg/kg. The glycaemia monitoring, and the determination of biological parameters were accessed through ASAT, ALAT, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, glycated haemoglobin tests. Results: The aqueous extract at related doses administered to diabetic rats has significantly reduced the mean blood glucose levels in all diabetic rats at 55.56%, 63.34% and 62.38% compared to healthy control batches in the three batches treated. These doses improved the change in body weight compared to the healthy control group. There was an increase of 110.9%, 107.67% and 109.31% respectively after four weeks of treatment compared to the initial weight of the rats. The significant increase (p Conclusions: These results showed hypoglycaemic and antihy-perglycaemic, antidiabetic effects, preventing the installation of some diabetes related complications. The phytochemical parameters of the extract showed chemical compounds which would act the reduction of the putative diabetes and its complications. These indicators show the importance of medicinal plants on diabetes treatment.
