The effect of total carbon on microscopic soil properties and implications for crop production

Soil structure is a dynamic property affected by physical, chemical, and microbiological processes. Addition of organic matter to soils and the use of different management practices have been reported to impact soil structure and crop production. Moderation in soil temperature and increases in microbial activity and soil water retention are often suggested as reasons for the rise in crop yield when organic matter is added to the soil. Less is known about the direct effect of changes in soil structure on crop production. A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of summer cover crop and in-season management system on soil structure. The experiment was a nested design with summer cover crop as the main plot and management system as the subplot. Summer cover crop treatments included cowpea （Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.） incorporated into the soil in the fall （CI）, cowpea used as mulch in the fall （CM）, sudangrass （Sorghum vulgare） incorporated into the soil in the fall （S）, and dry fallow or bare ground （B）. Management systems were organic （ORG） and conventional （CNV） systems. Lettuce （Lactuca sativa L.） and cantaloupes （Cucumis melo L.） were cultivated in rotation in the plots for three consecutive years using the same cover crops and management systems for each plot. Disturbed and undisturbed soil cores were collected at the end of the third year and used for laboratory experiments to measure physical, chemical, and hy- draulic properties. Image analysis was used to quantify soil structure properties using a scanning electron micro- scope on thin sections prepared from the undisturbed soil cores. We found that total soil carbon was correlated with porosity, saturation percentage, and pore roughness. Pore roughness was correlated with crop production in gen- eral and with marketable production in particular. AIM: To further define variables associated with increased incidences of severe toxicities following administration of yttrium-90 (90Y) ***: Fifty-eight patients undergoing 79 treatments were retrospectively assessed for development of clinical and laboratory toxicity incidence following 90Y administration. Severe toxicity events were defined using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.03 and defined as grade ≥ 3. Univariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the effect of different factors on the incidence of severe toxicity events. Multicollinearity was assessed for all factors with P 90Y microsphere therapy.

A simple approach to enhance the photocatalytic activity of red phosphorus（P） was developed.A mechanical ball milling method was applied to reduce the size of red P and to deposit graphene quantum dots onto red P. The product was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, contact angle measurements, zeta-potential measurements, X-ray diffraction and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. The product exhibited high visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance in the photodegradation of rhodamine B.

Pneumonia remains the single leading cause of childhood death *** the commercial availability of multiple pneumococcal conjugate vaccines(PCVs),high dosage cost and supply shortages prevent PCV delivery to much of the developing *** current work presents high-yield pneumococcal conjugates that are immunogenic in animals and suitable for use in human vaccine *** 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine(PCV-13)investigated in this research incorporated serotypes 1,3,4,5,6A,6B,7F,9V,14,18C,19A,19F,and *** polysaccharides(PnPSs)and CRM197 carrier protein were produced and purified in-house,and used to prepare PnPS-CRM conjugates using unique,cyanide-free,in vacuo glycation conjugation *** vitro characterization confirmed the generation of higher molecular weight PnPS-CRM conjugates low in free *** vivo animal studies were performed to compare PnuVax's PCV-13 to the commercially available PCV-13,Prevnar®13(Pfizer,USA).A boost dose was provided to all groups post-dose 1 at t?14 ***-dose 2 results at t?28 days showed that all 13 serotypes in PnuVax's PCV-13 were *** serotype IgG GMCs demonstrated that PnuVax's PCV-13 is immunogenic for all 13 serotypes,with 10 of the 13 serotypes statistically the same or higher than Prevnar®13 post-dose *** a result,the novel polysaccharideprotein conjugates developed in this work are highly promising for use in human PCV *** in vacuo conjugation technique applied in this work could also be readily adapted to develop many other conjugate vaccines.

Retinal emboli

Retinal emboli are opacities identified in retinal arterioles and are often incidental findings on ophthalmic examination. They are generally composed of cholesterol, platelet-fibrin, or calcium and are thought to arise from carotid arteries, coronary arteries, or cardiac valves. In the general population, the estimated prevalence is 0.2% to 1.3%, and the estimated incidence is 0.9% to 2.9%. The transient nature of retinal emboli likely explains the variations between and within these reported figures. The strongest risk factor for retinal emboli is smoking, which has been reported consistently across many studies. Other likely risk factors include older age, hypertension, male sex, total cholesterol, coronary artery disease, and history of coronary artery bypass grafting. The presence of multiple risk factors, as is common in many patients, confers a higher risk for retinal emboli. Several studies suggest that retinal emboli predict an increase in stroke-related, all-cause, and possibly cardiovascular mortality. Due to these sequelae, patients often undergo further workup, most commonly carotid ultrasonography. However, given the low prevalence of significant carotid disease in patients with retinal emboli, further workup, such as carotid ultrasound, should be reserved for those with risk factors for carotid disease. All patients would benefit from medical optimization and coordinated care with the primary care physician.

Background Advances in cancer treatments,particularly the development of radiation therapy,have led to improvements in survival outcomes in children with brain ***,radiation therapy is associated with significant long-term neurocognitive *** present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the neurocognitive outcomes of children and adolescents with brain tumors treated with photon radiation(XRT)or proton therapy(PBRT).Methods A systematic search was conducted(PubMed,Embase,Cochrane,and Web of Science from inception until 02/01/2022)for studies comparing the neurocognitive outcomes of children and adolescents with brain tumors treated with XRT *** pooled mean differences(expressed as Z scores)were calculated using a random effects method for those endpoints analyzed by a minimum of three *** Totally 10 studies(n=630 patients,average age range:1–20 years)met the inclusion *** who had received PBRT achieved significantly higher scores(difference in Z scores ranging from 0.29–0.75,all P0.05 in main analyses or sensitivity analyses)were found for nonverbal memory,verbal working memory and working memory index,processing speed index,or focused *** Pediatric brain tumor patients who receive PBRT achieve significantly higher scores on most neurocognitive outcomes than those who receive *** studies with long-term follow-ups are needed to confirm these results.
