Tropical cyclone(TC)genesis prediction is a major scientific challenge to the TC operation and research *** report surveys the current status of TC genesis forecasts by a number of major operational centers covering the key ocean basins across both *** IWTC-9,we see an emergence of probabilistic TC genesis forecast products by operational centers,typically supported by the statistical processing of a combination of ensemble prediction and satellite analysis,covering time periods of couple of days to weeks *** prevalence of multi-center grand ensemble approach highlights the uncertainties involved and the forecast challenges in quantitative genesis *** operational practice might differ across agencies,verification efforts generally report a steady or slightly improving skill level in terms of reliability,which likely results from the continual improvement in global numerical weather prediction capability.

For the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations of isentropic magnetohydrodynamics （MHD） with γ-law gas equation of state, γ≥ 1, and infinite electrical resistivity, we carry out a global analysis categorizing all possible viscous shock profiles. Precisely, we show that the phase portrait of the traveling-wave ODE generically consists of either two rest points connected by a viscous Lax profile, or else four rest points, two saddles and two nodes. In the latter configuration, which rest points are connected by profiles depends on the ratio of viscosities, and can involve Lax, overcompressive, or undercompressive shock profiles. Considered as three-dimensional solutions, undercompressive shocks axe Lax-type （Alfven） waves. For the monatomic and diatomic cases γ= 5/3 and γ=7/5, with standard viscosity ratio for a nonmagnetic gas, we find numerically that the the nodes are connected by a family of overcompressive profiles bounded by Lax profiles connecting saddles to nodes, with no undercompressive shocks occurring. We carry out a systematic numerical Evans function analysis indicating that all of these two-dimensional shock pro- files are linearly and nonlinearly stable, both with respect to two- and three-dimensional perturbations. For the same gas constants, but different viscosity ratios, we investigate also cases for which undercompressive shocks appear; these are seen numerically to be stable as well, both with respect to two-dimensional and （in the neutral sense of convergence to nearby riemann solutions） three-dimensional perturbations.

Silicon(Si)photonics has recently emerged as a key enabling technology in many application fields thanks to the mature Si process technology,the large silicon wafer size,and promising Si optical *** monolithic integration by direct epitaxy of III-V lasers and Si photonic devices on the same Si substrate has been considered for decades as the main obstacle to the realization of dense photonics *** considerable progress in the last decade,only discrete III-V lasers grown on bare Si wafers have been reported,whatever the wavelength and laser *** we demonstrate the first semiconductor laser grown on a patterned Si photonics platform with light coupled into a waveguide.A mid-Ir GaSb-based diode laser was directly grown on a pre-patterned Si photonics wafer equipped with SiN waveguides clad by SiO_(2).Growth and device fabrication challenges,arising from the template architecture,were overcome to demonstrate more than 10 mw outpower of emitted light in continuous wave operation at room *** addition,around 10%of the light was coupled into the SiN waveguides,in good agreement with theoretical calculations for this butt-coupling *** work lft an important building block and it paves the way for future low-cost,large-scale,fully integrated photonic chips.

Background: Prevention strategies post-stroke should target risk factor reduction which includes consideration of weight, diet and lipoprotein profiles. Limited data informs the optimal adiposity measurement post-stroke to target those at highest recurrent risk. This study aims to identify adiposity measurement/s post-stroke that best predict cardiovascular and co-morbid risk. Subjects and Methods: 142 stroke patients (100 males, 42 females;mean age 63 years) participated. Adiposity and metabolic profiles included BMI, waist circumference, waist to height ratio (WHr), triglyceride levels and hypertriglyceridemic waist. The predictive ability of these measures with indices of cardiovascular risk (Cardiovascular risk Score) and co-morbidity (Charlson’s co-morbidity index) were examined. results: In hierarchical multiple regression models, age and gender controlled, waist (p = 0.002), triglyceride levels (p = 0.006), BMI and WHr (p = 0.014), uniquely and significantly contributed to the variance in cardiovascular risk, in their models. Only one combination of measures (waist and triglyceride levels) improved the predictive ability of waist in cardiovascular risk stratification (p = 0.001). In men, waist (p = 0.013) and in women triglyceride levels (p = 0.012) performed as the best predictors of cardiovascular risk respectively. No combination of measures was superior to triglyceride levels in women or waist circumference measures in men in predicting cardiovascular risk. With Charlson’s co-morbidity index as the dependent variable, triglyceride levels significantly contributed to variance of the model with age and gender influences controlled (p = 0.047). No combination of measures improved the predictive ability of triglyceride levels for co-morbidity. Conclusion: Waist circumference and triglyceride levels should form a minimum dataset for adiposity when considering cardiovascular and comorbid risk post-stroke.

The current study uses a longitudinal, mixed-method approach to investigate the role that new media, such as social networking sites and video chat, play in cross-cultural adaptation and international student friendship network development. results indicate that international students significantly increase and adapt their new media use while abroad to communicate globally with their friends and family, and locally with their newly formed relationships. Furthermore, social networking site host national friends do not necessarily lead to the development of face-to-face host national friends;however, interaction with established face-to-face host national friends and friend groups via new media platforms leads to an increased understanding of host communication patterns. Finally, this study proposes that researchers who apply Kim’s [1] cross-cultural adaptation theory consider incorporating Host New Media Communication as a principal concept.

Diamond is a material of choice in the pursuit of integrated quantum photonic *** far,the majority of photonic devices fabricated from diamond are made from(100)-oriented *** this work,we demonstrate a methodology for the fabrication of optically active membranes from(111)-oriented *** use a liftoff technique to generate membranes,followed by chemical vapor deposition of diamond in the presence of silicon to generate homogenous silicon vacancy color centers with emission properties that are superior to those in(100)-oriented *** further use the diamond membranes to fabricate microring resonators with quality factors exceeding^*** by finite-difference time-domain calculations,we discuss the advantages of(111)-oriented structures as building blocks for quantum nanophotonic devices.
