Summary of a Life in Observational Ultraviolet/Optical Astronomy

I reminisce on my early life in Section 1;on my education in Sections 2 and 3;on the years at Princeton as a research astronomer in Section 4;on the years on the faculty at Chicago in Section 5;on research on Diffuse Interstellar Bands(DIBs) in Section 6;on construction of the 3.5 m telescope at Apache Point Observatory(APO)in Section 7;on work on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS) in Section 8;on work in public education in Chicago in Section 9;and on my travels in Section 10. My main science research is of an observational nature,concerning galactic and intergalactic interstellar gas. Highlights for me included my work on the orbiting telescope Copernicus, including the discovery of interstellar deuterium;early observations of absorption associated with fivetimes ionized oxygen;and discoveries concerning the phases of gas in the local interstellar medium, based on previously unobservable interstellar UV spectral lines. With other instruments and collaborations, I extended interstellar UV studies to the intergalactic cool gas using quasi-stellar object QSO absorption lines redshifted to the optical part of the spectrum;provided a better definition of the emission and morphological character of the source of absorption lines in QSO spectra;and pursued the identification of the unidentified DIBs. For several of these topics, extensive collaborations with many scientists were essential over many years. The conclusions developed slowly, as I moved from being a graduate student at Chicago, to a research scientist position at Princeton and then to a faculty position at Chicago. At each stage of life, I was exposed to new technologies adaptable to my science and to subsequent projects. From high school days, I encountered several management opportunities which were formative. I have been extremely fortunate both in scientific mentors I had and in experimental opportunities I encountered.

Coating powder beds with liquids and foams based on viscous formulations using a twin screw mixer: A continuous process study

Coating with viscous formulations has been essential in numerous industries as it can be a means for providing functionalization, additional properties, as well as other benefits. However, there have been scarce studies that have investigated and proposed methodologies in literature. Continuous coating of powders with viscous liquids poses as a promising technology, which has been mentioned in some studies, but has not yet been thoroughly investigated. This paper employs the use of image processing and analysis, in combination with statistical analysis of particles to evaluate the effectiveness of foams and liquids as a means of coating powder beds. Two different sizes of twin screw mixers that are working in continuous operation are employed, and a new continuous foaming device is fabricated and used for the experiments of coating. The effect of materials and process parameters (as for example rotational speed, and flowrate) on the quality of coating are investigated. Image analysis is used to assess the coating quality. The results clearly showcase the potential of using twin screw mixers for coating purposes and not only for mixing. The hypothesis that using large bubble foams to improve the coating of viscous liquids on particles is proven correct, as they provide higher quality coatings compared to their equivalent liquids, when used in the twin screw mixer. Surprisingly, using a larger scale twin screw mixer, does not show a substantial effect on the mixing, regarding quality, however there is still a requirement for mix optimization for achieving scale-up of this process. These results provide a new pathway for coating powders with viscous formulations in industrial applications, requiring less energy and effort in this process, and can pave the way towards introducing more sustainable industrial methodologies for coating. ZnO nanofluids-A potential antibacterial agent

In this work, ZnO nanofluids were produced by a medium mill with a pH value of about 7.2 and characterized by Nano-Sizer and SEM. After milling, ZnO nanofluids were formed with an average particle size of 198.4 nm. The ZnO nanofluids used for testing were stored for different periods (1-, 90- and 120-day) and kept in different conditions (under the light and in the dark). The antibacterial activities of these ZnO nanofluids were evaluated by estimating the reduction ratio of the bacteria treated with ZnO. The results showed that the ZnO nanofluid stored for 120 days under the light had the best antibacterial behavior against Escherichia coli DH5a. SEM images suggest that an interaction between the ZnO particles and the E. coli bacteria cells caused by electrostatic forces might be a mechanism.

Recent studies have started to provide initial insights into the aggregation and assembly of two classes of back-rigidified foldamers with flat,curved backbones consisting of aromatic *** their persistent shape that presents large,well-defined aromatic surface areas,these crescent foldamers were found to undergo size-dependent aggregation in solution and pack into 1D assemblies in the solid *** aromatic oligoamides undergo stacking interactions not only in polar solvents but also in nonpolar ones,a unique property that is not associated with many other molecules that associate via π-π stacking *** stacking of oligo(m-phenylene ethynylenes) is similar to aromatic hydrocarbons,being promoted in polar solvents such as methanol while being discouraged in nonpolar solvents such as *** ready synthetic availability of crescent foldamers makes it possible to directly control the intermolecular interaction by tuning surface ***,the columnar assembly of these cavity-containing molecules provides a new strategy for constructing supramolecular nanotubular structures.

Numerical simulation of sedimentation of microparticles usingthe discrete particle method

A mathematical model has been formulated based on the combined continuous and discrete particle method for investigating the sedimentation behaviour of microparticles in aqueous suspensions, by treating the fluid phase as continuous and the particles phase as discrete, thus allowing the behaviour of individual particles to be followed and the evolution of the structure of the particle phase to be investigated as a function of time. The model takes into account most of the prevailing forces acting on individual particles including van der Waals attractive, electrostatic repulsive, gravitational, Brownian, depletion, steric, contact and drag forces. A code has also been developed based on the model. This paper reports some preliminary modelling results of mono-dispersed microparticles settling in aqueous suspensions under various conditions. The results show the short time dynamics of the fluid phase, which has a similar order of magnitude to the particle phase. Such short time dynamics could bear significance to processes such as particle aggregation when their size becomes very small. Preliminary analyses of the results have also been carried out on the evolution of particle settling based on a newly proposed parameter, local normalised volume fraction （LNVF）.

Coating particles using liquids and foams based on viscous formulations with industrial mixers: Batch operation

Particle or powder coating with viscous liquids has been essential in industry for surface modification purposes to induce and enhance specific *** paper evaluates the performance of using foams (of different bubble diameters) versus liquids as a means of coating powder beds based on viscous liquid *** with viscous liquids present numerous industrial challenges and therefore preparing foam equivalents can render the liquid component weak enough (through pre shearing to form the foam),to allow it to break up and coat particles under the shear forces exerted in a mixing *** this study,two shear mixers are used;the first type consists of paddles in different configurations attached to a single rotating shaft,whilst the second type is a commercial twin screw mixer (TSM).The quality of coating achieved on the bulk powder bed using liquids and foams (stained with a dye) is assessed by image analysis to determine the homogeneity of the color *** addition,scanning electron microscopy provides a tool to further investigate the coating quality of individual particles from the bulk *** results show that large bubble (centimeter size) foams are much more effective at distributing within the fluidized powder bed compared to the starting viscous liquid and small bubble foams (submillimeter size).Furthermore,there is a maximum ratio of foam to powder beyond which agglomeration occurs and is insufficient to fully coat the *** of individual particles is achieved in the case of the TSM,whereas SEM proves that the single shaft paddle mixer crushes the particles and subsequently granulates them together to form granules of a size comparable to the size of coated particles seen after coating with the TSM.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamic Simulation on the Elasticity of Mg_3Al_2Si_3O_(12) Pyrope

We calculated thermo-elastic properties of pyrope（Mg3Al2Si3O12） at mantle pressures and temperatures using Ab initio molecular dynamic simulation.A third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation at a reference temperature of 2 000 K fits the calculations with bulk modulus,K0=159.5 gPa,K0＇=4.3,V0=785.89 A3,grüneisen parameter,γ0=1.15,q=0.80,Anderson grüneisen parameter δT=3.76 and thermal expansion,α0=2.93×10^-5 K^-*** to room temperature,where V0=750.80 A3,γ0 and α0 become 1.11 and 2.47×10^-5 K^-*** elastic properties of pyrope are found to be nearly isotropic at transition zone conditions.
