Introduction The Gram-positive bacterium,Streptococcus pneumoniae(S.pneumoniae),often colonizes the nasopharynx;however,it is one of the major microorganisms that cause pneumonia and meningitis.[[1],[2],[3]]It presents several virulence factors,such as surface proteins and enzymes,pneumolysin toxin,and a polysaccharide capsule,which is mainly responsible for the immune response;the capsule also facilitates classification of the bacterium into several serotypes.[1,2]In vulnerable individuals,the bacterium may lead to the development of invasive pneumococcal disease(IPD),which is defined as an infection of normally sterile locations.

Fire is a natural agent with a paramount role in ecosystem functioning and biodiversity maintenance.Still,it can also act as a negative force against many ecosystems.Despite some knowledge of the interactions of fire and vegetation,there is no clear understanding of how different components of fire regimes(i.e.,severity,history,or frequency)influence known patterns of animal communities.Therefore,we performed a systematic review on the global responses of arthropods,birds,mammals,reptiles,and amphibians to different fire regimes.Specifically,we focused on assessing how fire severity,history,and frequency modulate the effect of fire on the richness and abundance of faunal communities.We conducted a systematic review of 566 papers retrieved from the Scopus database.We also scrutinized all the documents included in the meta‑analysis of Pastro et al.(Pastro et al.Glob Ecol Biogeogr 23:1146–1156,2014).Our selection criteria excluded studies without data on species richness or abundance.We also excluded studies without adequate controls and those without information about the fire regime of the study zone.After careful examination,we used data from 162 studies to perform a quantitative meta‑analysis.From the 162 studies meeting our selection criteria,nearly 60%of the studies are from North America,25%from Australia,11%from Europe,and 4%from the tropics.According to the ecological role of fire,90%of the studies were carried out in fire‑dependent ecosystems(i.e.,conifer forests,natural savannas,pastures).Finally,40%of the studies analyzed birds,22%mammals,and 20%arthropods.The meta‑analysis of the available evidence indicates that fire history is an important modulator of animal richness and abundance.Whether negative or positive,animal responses depended on the time since the last fire event.Considering that short‑term studies may not capture such a long‑term effect on fauna,this translates to more challenges at implementing fire management strategies.Whether or not we can anticipate the impact of the fire will then dep

Background: The physiological and biochemical demands of intense exercise elicit both muscle-based and systemic responses. The main adaptations to endurance exercise include the correction of electrolyte imbalance, a decrease in glycogen storage and the increase of oxidative stress, intestinal permeability, muscle damage, and systemic inflammatory response. Adaptations to exercise might be influenced by the gut microbiota, which plays an important role in the production, storage, and expenditure of energy obtained from the diet as well as in inflammation,redox reactions, and hydration status.Methods: A systematic and comprehensive search of electronic databases, including MEDLINE, Scopus, Clinical Trials.gov, Science Direct,Springer Link, and EMBASE was done. The search process was completed using the keywords: "endurance", "exercise", "immune response","microbiota", "nutrition", and "probiotics".Results: Reviewed literature supports the hypothesis that intestinal microbiota might be able to provide a measureable, effective marker of an athlete's immune function and that microbial composition analysis might also be sensitive enough to detect exercise-induced stress and metabolic disorders. The review also supports the hypothesis that modifying the microbiota through the use of probiotics could be an important therapeutic tool to improve athletes' overall general health, performance, and energy availability while controlling inflammation and redox levels.Conclusion: The present review provides a comprehensive overview of how gut microbiota may have a key role in controlling the oxidative stress and inflammatory responses as well as improving metabolism and energy expenditure during intense exercise.

Boldness is defined as the tendency of an individual to take risks when exposed to novel objects or situations. The main aim of this work was to dilucidate if boldness was related to the development of the secondary sexual traits (SSTs) in the male of the river blenny Salaria fluviatilis, a freshwater fish which takes care of eggs. As a second objective SSTs effect on parental status adoption was also be explored. Wild young fish were caught in the Segre River (Ebro basin) in November 2010. Fish were kept in five aquaria in groups of eight males and eight females with artificial nests. Boldness (boldness score and hesitancy) of males (initially with little SSTs development) was tested as the time required to exit a refuge when exposed to a new environment. Fish were mantained in the same aquaria for several months, and males' SSTs development and reproductive behaviour were monitored. Boldness score was negatively associated to cephalic crest development. Hesitancy was negatively related to male length and was also influenced by the interaction between male length and cephalic crest. Parental status acquisition was positively related to the male's length, marginally related to anal gland development, and non-related to cephalic crest. These results suggest an intrasexual role of the crest as an informative trait of boldness (honest signal) which might not necessarily be chosen by the females. It is also discussed that correlational selection could be responsible for linking boldness and growth rate in this species. Sexual selection, in addition to having directed the evolution of secondary sexual traits, might have favored certain personality traits (e.g. boldness) associated with the achievement of a larger body length.

How the morphology of captive-reared fish is affected by structural enrichment in their rearing tanks is not well understood.Some studies have suggested that deficiencies in rearing environments could produce inappropriate body shape in salmonids(Vehanen and Huusko 2011).Garduho-Paz et al.(2010)have found significant differences in body and head shapes of 3-spine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus,depending on whether fish were reared in an environment with just gravel or in an environment enriched with large stones and artificial plants.

Genomic selection （GS） and high-throughput phenotyping have recently been captivating the interest of the crop breeding com- munity from both the public and private sectors world-wide. Both approaches promise to revolutionize the prediction of complex traits, including growth, yield and adaptation to stress. Whereas high-throughput phenotyping may help to improve understanding of crop physiology, most powerful techniques for high-throughput field phenotyping are empirical rather than analytical and compa- rable to genomic selection. Despite the fact that the two method- ological approaches represent the extremes of what is understood as the breeding process （phenotype versus genome）, they both consider the targeted traits （e.g. grain yield, growth, phenology, plant adaptation to stress） as a black box instead of dissectingthem as a set of secondary traits （i.e. physiological） putatively related to the target trait. Both GS and high-throughput phenotyping have in common their empirical approach enabling breeders to use genome profile or phenotype without understanding the underlying biology. This short review discusses the main aspects of both approaches and focuses on the case of genomic selection of maize flowering traits and near-infrared spectroscopy （NIRS） and plant spectral reflectance as high-throughput field phenotyping methods for complex traits such as crop growth and yield.

Sexual selection is considered the major cause of sexual dimorphism, but recent observations suggest that natural selection may play a more important role in the evolution of sex differentiation than previously recognized. Therefore, studying the trade-offs between natural selection and sexual selection is crucial to a better understanding of the ecology underlying the evolution of sexual dimorphism. The freshwater blenny , a fish inhabiting lakes and rivers around the Mediterranean Sea, displays strong sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and behavior (i.e., larger body and head size for males and higher swimming requirements for females during the reproductive period). We tested for differences in sexual dimorphism in size and shape between the populations from lake and river habitats with the goal of identifying the trade-offs between natural and sexual selection that underlie variations in sexual dimorphism in this species. Our results show i) differences in sexual size dimorphism (SSizeD) in accordance to Rensch's rule (i.e., larger individuals in rivers associated with higher SSizeD), and ii) a decrease in shape differentiation between males and females in lake populations. Together, this suggests that the different environmental conditions between lake and river habitats (e.g., resource limitations, predation pressure, water velocity) affect the relative importance of sexual selection in the display of sexual dimorphism within the species. This study highlights the importance of considering the environmental conditions to which populations are exposed to better understand the ecology underlying the evolution of sexual dimorphism.

This study evaluated the influence of husbandry（organic feed and management but not free-ranging vs. conventional） and sex（barrows vs. gilts） on pork meat quality. A total of 60 Longissimus thoracis pork muscle samples from different 3-way crossbred genotypes were chosen from 3 conventional and 2 organic pig farms. Technological meat quality was measured at 24 h post-mortem and muscle fatty acid content and composition was analysed by gas chromatography. The loin from organic pigs at 24 h of retail display had lower pH, but it had no detrimental effects on drip loss. All the International Commission on Illumination colour attributes except meat lightness differed between husbandry systems. Moisture and crude protein content were lower whereas intramuscular fat content was greater in organic than in conventional pork. Total saturated fatty acid（SFA）, monounsaturated fatty acid（MUFA）, polyunsaturated fatty acid（PUFA） and PUFA n-6 contents did not differ between husbandry systems, but total PUFA n-3（mainly C18：3 n-3） were greater in organic than in conventional pork. Sex did not affect ultimate p H or meat colour attributes but barrows showed lower moisture and greater intramuscular fat than gilts. Total SFA and MUFA content were similar but all the PUFA（both n-6 and n-3） were lower in barrows than in gilts. These results suggest that some bioactive compounds from dietary origin, i.e., linolenic acid（C18：3 n-3） content from dietary vegetable oils（soybean or olive olein）, might be used to highlight the nutritive value of（not free-ranging） organic pork meat. In addition, gilts were leaner than barrows and showed a more favourable PUFA/SFA ratio.

Contribution of the ear and the flag leaf to grainfilling in durum wheat inferred from the carbon isotope signature: Genotypic and growing conditions effects

The ear, together with the flag leaf, is believed to play a major role as a source of assimilates during grain filling in C3cereals. However, the intrusive nature of most of the available methodologies prevents reaching conclusive results in this regard. This study compares the carbon isotope composition（d13C） in its natural abundance in the water‐soluble fractions of the flag leaf blade and the ear with the d13C of mature kernels to assess the relative contribution of both organs to grain filling in durum wheat（Triticum turgidum L. var.durum）. The relative contribution of the ear was higher in landraces compared to modern cultivars, as well as in response to nitrogen fertilization and water stress. Such genotypic and environmentally driven differences were associated with changes in harvest index（HI）, with the relative contribution of the ear being negatively associated with HI. In the case of the genotypic differences, the lower relative contribution of the ear in modern cultivars compared with landraces is probably associated with the appearance in the former of a certain amount of source limitation driven by a higher HI. In fact, the relative contribution of the ear was far more responsive to changes in HI in modern cultivars compared with landraces.
