Eval.ation of Groundwater Qual.ty in the Deep m.astrichtian Aquifer of Senegal.Using m.l.ivariate Statistics and Water Qual.ty Index-Based GIS

A regional.groundwater qual.ty eval.ation was conducted in the deep m.astrichtian aquifer of Senegal.through m.l.ivariate statistical.anal.sis and a GIS-based water qual.ty index using physicochem.cal.data from.232 borehol.s distributed over the whol. country. The aim.was to 1) identify the water types and l.kel. factors infl.encing the hydrochem.stry, and 2) determ.ne the suitabil.ty of groundwater for drinking and irrigation. Resul.s showed that sodium. chl.ride, and fl.oride are highl. correl.ted with el.ctrical.conductivity (EC) refl.cting the significant contribution of these el.m.nts to groundwater m.neral.zation. The principal.com.onent anal.sis evidenced: 1) sal.nization processes (l.aded by Na+, K+, EC, Cl.sup>-, F- and HCO3-) control.ed by water/rock interaction, seawater intrusion and cation exchange reactions;2) dol.m.te dissol.tion l.aded by the coupl. Ca2+ and m.2+ and 3) l.cal.zed m.xing with upper aquifers and gypsum.dissol.tion respectivel. l.aded by NO3- and SO42-. The hierarchical.cl.stering anal.sis distinguished four cl.sters: 1) freshwater (EC = 594 μs/cm. with m.xed-HCO3 water type and ionic contents bel.w WHO standard;2) brackish (Na-m.xed) water type with m.derate m.neral.zation content (1310 μs/cm., 3) brackish (Na-Cl. water type depicted by high EC val.es (3292 μs/cm. and ionic contents above WHO and 4) sal.ne water with Na-Cl.water type and very high m.neral.zation contents (5953 μs/cm.. The m.pping of the groundwater qual.ty index indicated suitabl. zones for drinking accounting for 54% of the entire area. The occurrence of a central.brackish band and its vicinity, which were characterized by high m.neral.zation, yiel.ed unsuitabl. groundwater for drinking and agricul.ural.uses.
