The COVID-19 Vaccine Acceptance in Hemodialysis Patients in Togo

Introduction: Wide adoption of vaccination is the key to successfully control the spread of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). Objective: To evaluate the acceptability of COVID-19 vaccines and associated factors in hemodialysis patients in Lomé. Patients and Method: Cross-sectional study was conducted from August 1 to 31, 2021 in hemodialysis patients at the Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital to obtain their opinion on the anti-COVID-19 vaccination. Results: One hundred and twenty-three patients on regular hemodialysis were interviewed;their mean age was 45 years [37 - 55.5 years]. The average number of years patients were on dialysis was 3 years [2 - 5 years]. The general opinion on vaccination was mostly unfavorable (59.3%). Reasons given included: doubts about the quality of the vaccine (49.6%), fear of side effects (51.2%), alarming messages on social networks (36.5%) and doubts about the efficacy of the vaccines (33.3%). Only half of the patients in favor of vaccination were already vaccinated at the time of the survey. The main motivations for getting vaccinated were dominated by: fear of developing a severe form of COVID-19 if infected (32.5%), frailty due to age (19.5%) and medical history (15.4%). Social networks (72.3%), television (60.1%), family and friends (55.2%) were the main sources of information for patients about COVID-19 vaccination. Conclusion: Hemodialysis patients are mostly septic to anti-COVID-19 vaccination.

Background: COVID-19, an infectious viral disease, has caused a global health crisis. Most cases remain asymptomatic. The majority of patients have mild symptoms while about 15% develop a severe form. The clinical spectrum of SARS-CoV-2 infection appears broad, encompassing asymptomatic infection, upper respiratory tract symptoms, and severe viral pneumonia with respiratory failure that can lead to death. Laboratory tests play an important role in the management of COVID-19 patients. In addition to being essential for the diagnosis, several biological analyses make it possible to identify the inflammatory processes and the potential complications of this disease. This study attempted to identify biochemical assays that could help in the prognosis of the disease to ensure early management. Methods: This was a descriptive study. It focused on patients hospitalized for COVID-19 from March 19, 2020, to January 26, 2021, at the Infectious Disease Management Centre in Lomé (Togo). Medians were compared using the (Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon) test and frequencies were compared using the Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test. Results: We included 782 patients. The median age was 41 years IQR from 32 to 55. We observed several biochemical abnormalities in varying proportions for all biochemical parameters studied. Compared to non-serious patients, critically ill patients at admission had more frequently elevated urea, creatinine, transaminases, TG, GGT, CRP and blood glucose. Also, they had more frequent decreases in total cholesterol, HDL-c, blood chloride, and blood calcium. As for patients who died during hospitalization, compared with healed patients, they had more frequent elevations of urea, creatinine, AST, ALT, GGT. CRP and blood glucose. They also had a more frequent decrease in total cholesterol, HDL-c, blood chloride, blood calcium, and blood glucose (p = 0.025). Introduction: Malignant skin tumors are very frequent lesions, induced by sustained sun exposure. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is a dangerous cancer of the skin. It’s more frequent in white people than black people. Squamous cell carcinomas sometimes pose a real problem of local reconstruction after their removal. Reconstructions may involve the production of regional pedunculated flaps to repair the loss of substance. We report the case of a labio-jugal squamous cell carcinoma in an HIV-positive patient. The excision of the tumor required repair by a musculocutaneous flap of the pectoralis major. The aim of this paper is to show the dangerousness of that cancer, the particularity of its location around the mouth. We also want to call for a reflection about the recurrence of that disease on HIV infection ground, despite correct resection. Clinical Case: This was a 47-year-old HIV-positive patient on antiretroviral therapy (ARVs), treated 23 years ago for pulmonary tuberculosis. He presented with an ulcerated lower lip wound extending to the right labial commissure, right cheek, and the right lateral third of the upper lip. This lesion had progressed for about 6 months without a tendency to spontaneous healing. There was no palpable lymphadenopathy, especially in the cervicofacial region. The biopsy of the lower labial lesion concluded that it was a differentiated, mature, infiltrating squamous cell carcinoma. The craniofacial CT scan did not note any regional tumor invasion. We indicated tumor excision, functional lymph node dissection, and reconstruction by a flap of the pectoralis major muscle. The operative procedure was performed under general anesthesia. The edge cuts after carcinoma removal were healthy. Three months later, the patient is seen again with a local right submandibular recurrence. Radiotherapy was offered to him. Striga species affect the potential productivity of cereals in sub-Saharian Africa due to the lack of durable Striga-resistance in host crops. This study aimed at inducing the new source of resistance in sorghum using gamma irradiation. Dry seeds of three Sorghum varieties;Grinkan, ICV1049 and Sariaso14 were gamma-irradiated with 200 Gy, 300 Gy, 400 Gy and 500 Gy. Screening strategies involved a 2-year field and greenhouse experiments, where mutant Sorghum families, their parents and resistant control were artificially infected with Striga hermonthica seeds. Field screenings revealed induced genetic variability among them, forty families significantly reduced the number of emerged Striga plants or showed good Sorghum grain yield performance despite the infection by S. hermonthica ecotype from Burkina Faso. The induced putative resistant mutants were identified across the four applied gamma-irradiation doses. Greenhouse experiment confirmed Striga resistance in seven mutant Sorghum families leading to no emergence of Burkina’s S. hermonthica ecotype along with high resistance index (RI) and low Striga damage score. Introduction: The management of nasolabial-palatal clefts in precarious environments is one of the topics most addressed by many humanitarian missions, especially in Africa and Asia. The aim of our study was to propose a humanitarian and not expensive care to the patients presenting with facial clefts during the fairgrounds in disadvantaged areas. Patients and Method: We carried out a prospective study on 32 patients who were operated with very limited means during the mobile clinics inside Togo during the year 2013. These patients were followed over a period of one year after their surgery. Included in our series were native patients with facial clefts, who had no means of managing their condition, and who therefore needed humanitarian support. We have reported the clinical history of some patients to illustrate our results. Results: our study included 32 children, including 15 boys and 17 girls, with a sex ratio of around 1. The average age of patients was 5 years, with extremes of 6 months and 13 years. We performed 13 clefts (including 12 unilateral clefts and 1 bilateral cleft), 17 clefts palate (including 12 unilateral clefts and 5 bilateral clefts), and 2 velar clefts. We described the clinical history of a few patients in this humanitarian setting and showed the surgical results obtained.
