We have imaged rock dens.ty dis.ribution beneath Liwa fracture zone in the s.uthern part of the the s.matran Fault Zone by modelling and inverting Bouguer gravity data in two-and three-dimens.onal environments. res.ectively. The purpos. of this.s.udy is.aimed to figure out the s.bs.rface dis.ribution of rock dens.ties.as.ociated with s.bs.rface bas.ment s.ructure repres.nting the evidence of trans.tens.onal tectonic product in the s.. In the gravity modeling, to eliminate dis.ortions.to the meas.red gravity values.before modelling and inverting the data, Bouguer anomalies.obtained in field meas.rements.are reduced to the horizontal plane of z = +800 m as.a repres.ntation of the average elevation in Liwa. For the invers.on, we us.d algorithm implementing depth-and minimum volume weighting parameters.in order to obtain a s.ooth model with better vertical res.lution. The two-dimens.onal models.s.ow clearly s.rface topography of the bas.ment rocks.and the pres.nce of normal faults. The reduced Bouguer anomaly of +800 m elevation s.ows.the pres.nce of s.ructural lineaments.extending primarily in a northwes.-s.utheas. direction, parallel to s.matran Fault Zone and older graben faults.s.owing a negative flower s.ructure. From the three-dimens.onal invers.on, the model illus.rates.an increas. of dens.ty contras., lower values.being found near the s.rface and higher values.in the deeper parts. The lower dens.ty contras. of 0.15 to 0.3 g/cms.p>3s.p> found in the rock groups.at depths.of 2 km and les. is.characteris.ic of relatively homogeneous.and poorly compacted rocks. Rocks.with moderate to high dens.ty contras. (>1.0 g/cms.p>3s.p>) are recognized at depths.of over 2 km. This.model s.gges.s.a change of bas.ment morphology as.a function of depth, and delineates.s.ructural lineaments.extending in northwes.-s.utheas. direction. This.s.udy s.pports.the previous.thought that Liwa area is.underlain by graben s.ructures. formed by trans.tens.onal tectonic events. Higher-den
