Sensing Behaviour of Some Nanocomposite Systems

Silver nanoparticles of diameters 3.4 to 13.2 nm grown at the interfaces between silicate glass and some oxide crystallites exhibited about six orders of magnitude reduction in resistivity for a relative humidity change from 25% to 80%. Sn-SnO2 nano core-shell structure prepared within a gel-derived silica glass film by electrodeposition technique followed by heat treatment showed large change in resistivity as a function of humidity. The resistivity also changed due to gas flow of CO2, C2H5OH and NO2, respectively. The latter arose because of reduction/oxidation of Sn4+/Sn2+ species present at the shell layer of the nanostructures. Nickel nanosheets of thickness ~0.6 nm grown within the interlayer spaces of Na-4 mica crystallites showed a change of dielectric permittivity (5%) for an applied magnetic field of 1.2 Tesla. An inhomogeneous model was used to explain this behavior. Two dimensional CuO phase was grown within the channels of diameter ~5 nm of mesoporous SiO2 structure. A magnetodielectric (mD) parameter m.D. of 4.4% was obtained in this case. BaTiO3 nanoparticles of diameter ~25 nm having pores with diameter 10 nm showed multiferroic behavior which arose due to the presence of oxygen vacancies as a result of large surface area present. An m.D. parameter of 11% was found. Similarly mesoporous LiNbO3 of 10 nm diameter showed an m.D. parameter of ~4.5% at a magnetic field 1 Tesla. A giant magnetocapacitance effect with a value of 44% at 1.5 T was observed in nickel zinc ferrite (NZF) impregnated mesoporous silica. A magnetocapacitance of 51% at magnetic field 1.7 T was found in the case of nanocomposites comprising of iron ion containing silica based nanoglass and mesoporous silica. In the last two examples the behavior was explained on the basis of Catalan model of space-charge polarization with extracted values of magnetoresistance of the NZF and nanoglass phases being 58%.

Genome engineering for materials synthesis is a promising avenue for manufacturing materials with unique properties under ambient *** in diatoms,unicellular algae that use silica to construct micron-scale cell walls with nanoscale features,is an attractive candidate for functional synthesis of materials for applications including photonics,sensing,filtration,and drug ***,controllably modifying diatom structure through targeted genetic modifications for these applications is a very promising *** this work,we used gene knockdown in Thalassiosira pseudonana diatoms to create modified strains with changes to structural morphology and linked genotype to phenotype using supervised machine *** artificial neural network(NN)was developed to distinguish wild and modified diatoms based on the SEm images of frustules exhibiting phenotypic changes caused by a specific protein(Thaps3_21880),resulting in 94% detection *** activation maps visualized physical changes that allowed the NNs to separate diatom strains,subsequently establishing a specific gene that controls pores.A further NN was created to batch process image data,automatically recognize pores,and extract pore-related *** interrelationship of the extracted paraments was visualized using a multivariate data visualization tool,called CrossVis,and allowed to directly link changes in morphological diatom phenotype of pore size and distribution with changes in the genotype.

为了查明盐酸曲马多在手术中的止痛作用，我们对１５０名符合ＡＳＡ Ⅰ～Ⅱ的成年病人进行了研究。病人被随机分为两个组：在吸入麻醉剂前１５分钟，第一组（１００例）静脉注射１ｍｇ／ｋｇ盐酸曲马多，第二组（５０例）静脉注射了０．１ｍｇ／ｋｇ吗啡，然后进行吸入式麻醉。在手术期间，两组病人的心率和血压都显示稳定，麻醉效果相同。两组病人需要肌肉松弛药的情况也相同。然而，第二组病人术后出现并发症的概率要高。第二组的４例病人由于体内残留的麻醉药和吗啡的镇痛作用出现了缺氧症状（ＳｐＯ２ ≤９０％）。因此，我们得出的结论是，盐酸曲马多和吗啡都是有效的手术止痛药，然而，盐酸曲马多不会产生术后呼吸并发症。

Erratum to “Heavy metals in Soils around the Cement Factory in Rockfort, Kingston, Jamaica” [International Journal of Geosciences 2 (2011) 48-54]

This study deals with the distribution of heavy metals in soils around one of the most important industries in Kingston, Jamaica?i.e.?the Carib Cement factory at Rockfort. The dust emitted from the Caribbean Cement Company Limited (Carib Cement), located in Rockfort, Kingston, gets deposited in course of time over the soil, leaves and forms a grey cover on the surrounding soils. Geochemical analysis of the top soil, collected from the present study area has been undertaken to assess the impact of the dust emitted from the cement factory and its effect on the surrounding ecosystem. A total of seventeen top soil samples of 0-10 cm depth were collected from the close vicinity of the Rockfort and the Harbour view area and analysed by INAA, AAS, XRF for major, minor and trace elements. Results show that the top soils of the study area are enriched in Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, V, Pb, and Hg which are released into the air from the cement kilns. Results show that the soils are enriched in Ca with a maximum value of 18% followed by Al, Fe and Na. Heavy metals in the soils of the study area shows relatively high concentrations of zinc with a maximum of 132 ppm followed by Cr (57) ppm and Pb (32) ppm. maximum concentrations were found in soils sampled at a distance of 2-3?m from the cement factory as opposed to samples collected much further ie from the Harbour View area. High concentrations of the heavy metals in the soils near the cement factory as opposed to those further away can be due to the emissions from the factory. A significant contribution can also come from traffic emissions as the study area is located along one of the busiest street of Kingston, Jamaica.

OBJECTIVE Platinum compounds such as cisplatin and carboplatin are frequently used as the first-line chemotherapy for the treatment of the head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC).In the present study,we investigated whether garcinol,apolyisoprenylated benzophenone can chemosensitize HNSCC to *** The effect of garcinol and cisplatin on HNSCC was assessed by mTT,Western blotting,real time PCR,FACS,immunohistochemistry,DNA binding assay and xenograft mouse *** We found that garcinol inhibited the viability of a panel of diverse HNSCC cell lines,enhanced the apoptotic effect of cisplatin,suppressed constitutive as well as cisplatin-induced NF-κB activation,and downregulated the expression of various oncogenic gene products(cyclin D1,Bcl-2,survivin and VEGF).In vivo study showed that administration of garcinol alone(0.5 mg·kg-1,ip five times/week)significantly suppressed the growth of the tumor,and this effect was further increased by *** the markers of proliferation index(Ki-67)and microvessel density(CD31)were downregulated in tumor tissues by the combination of cisplatin and *** pharmacokinetic results of garcinol indicated that good systemic exposure was achievable after ip administration of garcinol at 0.5and 2mg·kg-1 with mean peak concentration(cmax)of 1825.4 and 6635.7nmol·L-1 in the mouse serum,*** Overall,our results suggest that garcinol can indeed potentiate the effects of cisplatin by negative regulation of various inflammatory and proliferative biomarkers.

在印度西南部有一个从戈伊纳水库向南延伸30km的地震带。在过去的34年里,已经记录到了150多个m≥4的地震和10个m≥5的地震。在1993年8月到1994年12月期间,在新蓄水的瓦尔纳水库区突然发生了一系列地震。震中区在戈伊纳大坝南25km处,两个水库之间,但离新水库近。在1994年,国家地球物理研究所在戈伊纳-瓦尔纳水库地区布设了数字地震仪观测系统。其目的是研究该地区发生地震的物理过程,3个地震台从1994年10月到1995年6月记录到了193个m=1.5～4.7的地震,用它们的横波波谱资料估算了震源参数。对1.5～4.7级的地震作波谱分析之后求得地震矩范围为10^(11)～10^(16)N·m,震源半径范围为94～538m,应力降范围为0.03～19mPa。由观测结果知m≥3地震与2mPa以上的大应力降有关。大能量释放(通过多次m≥3的地震)和高应力降的地震多发生在0～1km和5～10km这个深度范围。1～4km这个深度发生地震的次数少,且应力降也低。这种大能量释放和高应力降现象可能是由于在0～1km这个深度上岩石的低流体静压力条件和5～13km深度上岩石的饱和流体静压力条件下引起的应力高度集中和应力增加。特别值得一提的是,m≥3的高应力降地震,现在很少发生在戈伊纳水库附近,却经常发生在新水库附近。

Deriving invariant checkers for critical infrastructure using axiomatic design principles

Cyber-physical systems(CPSs)in critical infrastructure face serious threats of attack,motivating research into a wide variety of defence mechanisms such as those that monitor for violations of invariants,*** properties over sensor and actuator states that should always be *** approaches for identifying invariants attempt to do so automatically,typically using data logs,but these can miss valid system properties if relevant behaviours are not well-represented in the ***,as the CPS is already built,resolving any design flaws or weak points identified through this process is *** this paper,we propose a systematic method for deriving invariants from an analysis of a CPS design,based on principles of the axiomatic design methodology from design *** method iteratively decomposes a high-level CPS design to identify sets of dependent design parameters(*** and actuators),allowing for invariants and invariant checkers to be derived in parallel to the implementation of the *** apply our method to the designs of two CPS testbeds,SWaT and WADI,deriving a suite of invariant checkers that are able to detect a variety of single-and multi-stage attacks without any false ***,we reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of our approach,how it can be complemented by other defence mechanisms,and how it could help engineers to identify and resolve weak points in a design before the controllers of a CPS are implemented.

Protective effect of Luffa acutangula extracts on gastric ulceration in NIDDm rats:Role of gastric mucosal glycoproteins and antioxidants

Objective:To study the comparative gastroprotective effect of Luffa acutangula methanolic extract(LAm) and aqueous extract(LAW) on typeⅡdiabetes ***:Streptozotocin(65 mg/kg,Lp.) along with nicotinamide(120 mg/kg,Lp.) was used to induce non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus(NIDDm) in rats.A daily oral dose of aspirin(200 mg/kg,Lp.) was administered for initial seven days to induce gastric ulcerations in the diabetic *** and LAW were administered orally in the doses of 100,200 and 400 mg/kg once daily for 21 *** and ranitidine were used as standards for comparing the antidiabetic and antiulcer effect ***:LAm significantly(Pmucosal glycoprotein and antioxidant enzyme level in gastric mucosa of diabetic rats than LAW(P m was efficient in reversing the delayed healing of gastric ulcer in diabetic rats close to the normal *** exhibited better ulcer healing effect than glibenclamide and LAW,because of its both antihyperglycemic and mucosal defensive ***:Thus,LAm is proved to be a better alternative for treating gastric ulcers co-occurring with diabetes.
