Race, family history and age are the unequivocally accepted risk factors for prostate cancer （PCa）. Androgen receptor （AR）-dependent signaling is an important element in prostate carcinogenesis and its progression to metastatic disease. We examined the possibility of genomic changes in the AR in association with familial PCa in African Americans who have a higher incidence and mortality rate and a clinically more aggressive disease presentation than Caucasians. Genomic DNAs of 60 patients from 30 high-risk African American and Caucasian families participating in the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center genetic linkage study of PCa were studied. Exon-specific polymerase-chain reaction, bi-directional automated sequencing and restriction enzyme genotyping were used to analyze for mutations in the coding region of the AR gene. We identified a germline AR （A1675T）（T559S） substitution mutation in the DNA-binding domain in three PCa-affected members of an African- American family with a history of early-onset disease. The present study describes the first AR germline mutation in an African-American family with a history of familial PCa. The AR （T559S） mutation may contribute to the disease by altering AR DNA-binding affinity and/or its response to androgens, non-androgenic steroids or anti-androgens. Additional studies will be required to define the frequency and contribution of the AR （A 1675T） allele to early-onset and/or familial PCa in African Americans.

Effect of metal fractions on rice grain metal uptake and biological parameters in mica mines waste contaminated soils

Heavy metals from mica waste not only deteriorate the soil quality but also results in the uptake of metals in the *** present investigation was conducted to evaluate the effects of different fractions of metals on the uptake in rice,soil microbial and biochemical properties in mica waste-contaminated soils of Jharkhand,*** each active mine,soil samples were randomly collected at distances ofm(zone 1),50–100 m(zone 2),and>100 m(zone 3).Sequential metal extraction was used to determine the fractions of different metals(nickel(Ni),cadmium(Cd),chromium(Cr)and lead(Pb))including water-soluble(Ws)and exchangeable metals(Ex),carbonate-bound metals(CBD),Fe/mn oxide(OXD)bound metals,organically bound metals(ORG),and residues(RS).The Ni,Cr,Cd and Pb in rice grain were 0.83±0.41,0.41±0.19,0.21±0.14 and 0.17±0.08 mg/kg *** the variable importance plot of the random forest(RF)algorithm,the Ws fraction of Ni,Cr and Cd and Ex fraction of Pb was the most important predictor for rice grain metal ***,the partial dependence plots(PDP)give us an insight into the role of the two most important metal fractions on rice grain metal *** microbial and enzyme activity was significantly and negatively correlated with Ws and Ex metal fractions,indicating that water-soluble and exchangeable fractions exert a strong inhibitory effect on the soil microbiological parameters and enzyme activities.

The present study assesses the concentration,probabilistic risk,source classification,and dietary risk arising from heavy metal(Hms)pollution in agricultural soils affected by coal mining in eastern part of *** of soil and rice plant indicated significantly elevated levels of Hms beyond the permissible limit in the contaminated zones(zone 1:PbSoil:108.24±72.97,CuSoil:57.26±23.91,CdSoil:8.44±2.76,CrSoil:180.05±46.90,NiSoil:70.79±25.06 mg/kg;PbGrain:0.96±0.8,CuGrain:8.6±5.1,CdGrain:0.65±0.42,CrGrain:4.78±1.89,NiGrain:11.74±4.38 mg/*** 2:PbSoil:139.56±69.46,CuSoil:69.89±19.86,CdSoil:8.95±2.57,CrSoil:245.46±70.66,NiSoil:95.46±22.89 mg/kg;PbGrain:1.27±0.84,CuGrain:7.9±4.57,CdGrain:0.76±0.43,CrGrain:8.6±1.58,NiGrain:11.50±2.46 mg/kg)compared to the uncontaminated zone(zone 3).Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks were computed based on the Hms concentration in the soil and rice grain,with Pb,Cr,and Ni identified as posing a high risk to human *** Carlo simulation,the solubility-free ion activity model(FIAm),and severity adjusted margin of exposure(SAmOE)were employed to predict health *** hazard quotient(HQ)values for Ni,Cr,Cd,and Pb were>1,indicating a significant non-carcinogenic ***(risk thermometer)results for contaminated zones ranged from low to moderate risk(CrSAmOE:0.05,and NiSAmOE:0.03).Fuzzy-TOPSIS and variable importance plots(from random forest)showed that Ni and Cr were mostly responsible for the toxicity in the rice plant,respectively.A self-organizing map for source classification revealed common origin for the studied Hms with zone 2 exhibiting the highest *** positive matrix factorization model for the source apportionment identified coal mining and transportation as the predominant sources of *** distribution analysis indicated higher contamination near mining sites as compared to distant sampling ***,this study will aid environmental scientists and policymakers controllin

Electronic correlation in nearly free electron metals with beyond-DFT methods

For more than three decades,nearly free-electron elemental metals have been a topic of debate because the computed bandwidths are significantly wider in the local density approximation to density-functional theory(DFT)than indicated by angle-resolved photoemission(ARPES)***,we systematically investigate this using first principles calculations for alkali and alkaline-earth metals using DFT and various beyond-DFT methods such as meta-GGA,G0W0,hybrid functionals(YS-PBE0,B3LYP),and LDA+*** find that the static non-local exchange,as partly included in the hybrid functionals,significantly increase the bandwidths even compared to LDA,while the G0W0 bands are only slightly narrower than in *** agreement with the ARPES is best when the local approximation to the self-energy is used in the LDA+eDmFT *** infer that even moderately correlated systems with partially occupied s orbitals,which were assumed to approximate the uniform electron gas,are very well described in terms of short-range dynamical correlations that are only local to an atom.

LDF based parametric optimization to model fluidized bed adsorption of trichloroethylene on activated carbon particles

Trichloroethylene(TCE)is largely used in industries as a cleaning and degreasing *** is a potential carcinogen and is known to cause organ damage when exposed to prolonged higher *** simulation of fixed and fluidized bed adsorption of TCE can help in the development of efficient adsorption processes to prevent industrial workers in the vicinity from acute TCE *** the present work,a parametric optimization based numerical experimentation algorithm is implemented by open-source computational solvers to model fixed and fluidized bed adsorption of trichloroethylene vapors on activated *** algorithm optimizes four parameters pertaining to linear driving force(LDF)formulation of surface barrier and microporous *** optimized parameters were utilized to evaluateζ,a dimensionless number defined as the temporal and spatial average ratio of surface barrier diffusion resistance to microporous diffusion *** average value ofζis 0.139 for fixed bed operation(u/u_(mf)=0.7),1.130 for fluidized bed operation(u/u_(mf)=1),4.436 for fluidized bed operation(u/u_(mf)=1.5)and 6.317 for fluidized bed operation(u/u_(mf)=2).Therefore,the dimensionless numberζmay serve to predict the extent of change in amount adsorbed per unit adsorbent mass with change in fluidization velocity.

Powder mixed electrochemical discharge process for micro machining of C103 niobium alloy

This work demonstrates the viability of the powder-mixed micro-electrochemical discharge machining(PmECDm) process to fabricate micro-holes on C103 niobium-based alloy for high temperature *** processes are involved simultaneously *** erosion,chemical etching,and abrasive grinding for removal of material while the classical electrochemical discharge machining process involves double actions *** erosion,and chemical *** powder-mixed electrolyte process resulted in rapid material removal along with a better surface finish as compared to the classical microelectrochemical discharge machining(mECDm).Further,the results are optimized through a multiobjective optimization approach and study of the surface topography of the hole wall surface obtained at optimized *** the selected range of experimental parameters,PmECDm shows a higher material removal rate(mRR) and lower surface roughness(R_(a))(mRR:2.8 mg/min and R_(a) of 0.61 μm) as compared to the mECDm process(mRR:2.01 mg/min and corresponding Raof 1.11 μm).A detailed analysis of the results is presented in this paper.

TGA/DSC study to characterise and classify coal seams conforming to susceptibility towards spontaneous combustion

Thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimeter(TGA/DSC)technique along with basic coal characteristics study is carried out for eighty coal samples of Indian coalfields,to determine spontaneous combustion propensity behaviour of *** study of coal samples indicates that there is an increase in the mass of coal samples in the temperature range 150-350℃,which may be due to oxygen adsorption and *** correlation and principal component analysis states that the component of proximate analysis(m_(ad),Vm_(d),FR,and VR)have an acceptable correlation with the TGA experiments results i.e.,Tgsh and *** fixed nonlinear regression analysis shows that thermogravimetry(TG)experiment results Tgign may be the best index to categorise/classify the coal as per their susceptibility towards spontaneous *** authors proposed four groups of classification as per their propensity towards spontaneous combustion depending upon the moisture(m_(ad)),volatile matter(Vm_(d)),and TG ignition temperature from differential thermogravimetric(DTG)curve(Tgign)using hierarchal clustering *** coal samples of different seams from Indian coalfield may be classified into four different clusters,*** highly/extremely susceptible(Tgignmoderately susceptible(290℃≤Tgign≤320℃),and poorly susceptible(Tgign>320℃).The field observations and TGA/DSC experiment results with the following statistical analysis substantiate a similar assessment.

Solid fraction evolution characteristics of semi-solid A356 alloy and in-situ A356–TiB_2 composites investigated by differential thermal analysis

The key factor in semi-solid metal processing is the solid fraction at the forming temperature because it affects the microstructure and mechanical properties of the thixoformed components. Though an enormous amount of data exists on the solid fraction-temperature re- lationship in A356 alloy, information regarding the solid fraction evolution characteristics of A356-TiB2 composites is scarce. The present article establishes the temperature-solid fraction correlation in A356 alloy and A356-xTiB2 （x = 2.5wt% and 5wt%） composites using dif- ferential thermal analysis （DTA）. The DTA results indicate that the solidification characteristics of the composites exhibited a variation of 2℃ and 3℃ in liquidus temperatures and a variation of 3℃ and 5℃ in solidus temperatures with respect to the base alloy. moreover, the eutectic growth temperature and the solid fraction（fs） vs. temperature characteristics of the composites were found to be higher than those of the base alloy. The investigation revealed that in-situ formed TiB2 particles in the molten metal introduced more nucleation sites and reduced undercooling.

Nanocrystalline samples of highly pure lead oxide were prepared by the sol-gel route of synthesis.X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic techniques confirmed the nanocrystallinity of the samples,and the average sizes of the crystallites were found within 20 nm to 35 *** nanocrystallites exhibited specific anomalous properties,among which a prominent one is the increased lattice parameters and unit cell *** optical band gaps also increased when the nanocrystallites became smaller in *** latter aspect is attributable to the onset of quantum confinement effects,as seen in a few other metal oxide *** annihilation was employed to study the vacancy type defects,which were abundant in the samples and played crucial roles in modulating their *** defect concentrations were significantly larger in the samples of smaller crystallite *** results suggested the feasibility of tailoring the properties of lead oxide nanocrystallites for technological applications,such as using lead oxide nanoparticles in batteries for better performance in discharge rate and *** also provided the physical insight into the structural build-up process when crystallites were formed with a finite number of atoms,whose distributions were governed by the site stabilization energy.

Effect of size on momentum distribution of electrons around vacancies in NiO nanoparticles

Very small nickel oxide nanoparticles were prepared by a sol-gel procedure using nickel nitrate hexahydrate and ammonium hydroxide as precursors. The particles are in the range of 5 nm-11 rim. The x-ray diffraction （XRD） crystallography and high resolution transmission electron microscopy （HRTEm） were employed to characterize the samples. They were found to be polycrystalline in nature and fcc （NaCl-type） in structure, with the lattice parameter varying with annealing temperature. HRTEm pictures show that the as-prepared samples are hexagonal in shape. Positron annihilation spectroscopy was used to investigate the Doppler-broadened spectra of the samples. The S and W parameters revealed that the chemical surroundings and momentum distribution of the vacancy clusters vary with crystallite size.
