Chronic hepatitis C is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, mainly related to fibrosis/cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Direct antiviral agents are highly effective and safe and can now cure > 90% of the patients. sustained viral response (sVR) after interferon-based regimens has been associated with improvement in liver function, fibrosis and portal hypertension in a significant proportion of patients, although a point of no return seems to exist from which viral elimination is no longer capable of preventing portal hypertension progression and liver decompensation. Indeed, although sVR is associated with improvement of hepatic venous pressure gradients and therefore a decreased risk of de novo esophageal varices, several studies show that viral clearance does not eliminate the risk of variceal progression, liver decompensation and death in patients with pre-established portal hypertension. Although evidence about the effects of direct antiviral agents (DAAs) on clinically significant outcomes is still scarce and with short follow-up, DAAs can decrease the burden of the disease if patients are timely treated before significant fibrosis and portal hypertension develops. studies with longer follow-up are waited to establish the real magnitude of hepatitis C treatment on portal hypertension. Future studies should also focus on predictors of portal hypertension resolution since it can influence management and avoid unnecessary monitoring

Erectile dysfunction is a common side effect of finasteride and dutasteride treatments. The objective of this study was to investigate the structural changes in the penis using a benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） rodent model treated with dutasteride or finasteride. sixty male rats were divided into the following groups： C, untreated control rats; C ＋ D, control rats receiving dutasteride; C ＋ F, control rats receiving finasteride; H, untreated spontaneously hypertensive rats （sHRs）; H ＋ D, sHRs treated with dutasteride; and H ＋ F, sHRs treated with finasteride. Treatments were performed for 40 days, and penises were collected immediately thereafter. The organs were analyzed using histomorphometric methods to determine the cross-sectional penile area, as well as the surface density （sv） of smooth muscle fibers, connective tissue, elastic system fibers, and sinusoidal spaces of the corpus cavernosum. The results were compared using a one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni＇s posttest. Groups C ＋ D and C ＋ F had a significantly smaller penile cross-sectional area, but more elastic system fiber sv compared to Group C. Group C ＋ D showed less smooth muscle sv, and Group H showed more connective tissue but a smaller sinusoidal space sv in the corpus cavernosum compared to Group C. Groups H ＋ D and H ＋ F had less smooth muscle sv than Group H. Group H ＋ D also had more connective tissue and elastic system fiber sv than Group H. Both dutasteride and finasteride promoted penile modifications in the control rat penis, although this affect was ~reater in Group H animals. In this rodent model, dutasteride was the drug that most affected the corpus cavernosum.

Industrial process plants use emergency shutdown valves(EsDVs)as safety barriers to protect against hazardous events,bringing the plant to a safe state when potential danger is *** EsDVs are used extensively in offshore oil and gas processing plants and have been mandated in the design of such systems from national and international standards and *** paper has used actual EsDV operating data from four mid/late life oil and gas production platforms in the North sea to research operational relationships that are of interest to those responsible for the technical management and operation of *** first of the two relationships is between the closure time(CT)of the EsDV and the time it remains in the open position,prior to the close *** has been hypothesised that the CT of the EsDV is affected by the length of time that it has been open prior to being closed(Time since the last stroke).In addition to the general analysis of the data series,two sub-categories were created to further investigate this possible relationship for CT and these are“above mean”and“below mean”.The correlations(Pearson's based)resulting from this analysis are in the“weak”and“very weak”*** second relationship investigated was the effect of very frequent closures to assess if this improves the *** operational records for six subjects were analysed to find closures that occurred within a 24 h period of each ***,no discriminating trend was apparent where CT was impacted positively or negatively by the frequent closure *** was concluded that the variance of EsDV closure time cannot be influenced by the technical management of the EsDV in terms of scheduling the operation of the EsDV.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic stress on the testes of prepubertal and adult rats and to evaluate whether any alterations could be reversed when stress induction is ended. seventy-six male rats were assigned to eight groups depending on the type of treatment （control or stressed）, the age at which stress was initiated （prepubertal or adult）, and the time of evaluation （immediate or late）. stress stimuli were applied for 6 weeks. stressed prepubertal and adult rats evaluated immediately after the last stress stimulus were included in sP-I and sA-I groups, respectively. The late prepubertal （sP-L） and adult （sA-L） groups of stressed rats were evaluated 6 weeks after the last stress stimulus. Age-matched rats were used as controls （CP-I, CA-I, CP-L, and CA-L groups）. Application of stress stimuli to rats in the sP-I group resulted in body weight and seminiferous tubule diameter reduction. The rats in the sA-I group also showed several functional （testosterone level and sperm parameter） and morphological （testicular weight and seminiferous tubule diameter） reductions. The rats in the sP-L group showed increased body weight and intertubular compartment volumetric and absolute densities and reduced tubular compartment volumetric density. The rats in the sA-L group presented only reduced sperm viability. stress stimuli promoted changes in the rats in all the study groups. The testes of the adult rats were the most affected by chronic stress. However, the stressed adult rats recovered well from the testicular alterations.

In recent years, multiple disciplines have focused on mitochondrial biology and contributed to understanding its relevance towards adult-onset neurodegenerative disorders. These are complex dynamic organelles that have a variety of functions in ensuring cellular health and homeostasis. The plethora of mitochondrial functionalities confers them an intrinsic susceptibility to internal and external stressors(such as mutation accumulation or environmental toxins), particularly so in long-lived postmitotic cells such as neurons. Thus, it is reasonable to postulate an involvement of mitochondria in aging-associated neurological disorders, notably neurodegenerative pathologies including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. On the other hand, biological effects resulting from neurodegeneration can in turn affect mitochondrial health and function, promoting a feedback loop further contributing to the progression of neuronal dysfunction and cellular death. This review examines state-of-the-art knowledge, focus on current research exploring mitochondrial health as a contributing factor to neuroregeneration, and the development of therapeutic approaches aimed at restoring mitochondrial homeostasis in a pathological setting.

Problems associated with carbon support corrosion under operating fuel cell conditions require the identification of alternative supports for platinum-based nanosized *** supported on manganese vanadate(Pt/MnV_(2)O_(6))was prepared by microwave irradiation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction,Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy,and transmission electron *** borohydride oxidation reaction(BOR)on Pt/MnV_(2)O_(6) was studied in highly alkaline media using voltammetry,chronoamperometry,and electrochemical impedance *** electrocatalytic activity of Pt/MnV_(2)O_(6) was also compared with that of commercial Pt/C(46 wt%Pt)*** apparent activation energy of BOR at Pt/MnV_(2)O_(6) was estimated to be 32 k J mol^(-1) and the order of reaction to be 0.51,indicating that borohydride hydrolysis proceeds in parallel with its ***-term stability of Pt/MnV_(2)O_(6) under BOR typical conditions was observed.A laboratory-scale direct borohydride fuel cell assembled with a Pt/MnV_(2)O_(6) anode reached a specific power of 274 W g^(-1).Experimental results on Pt/MnV_(2)O_(6) were complemented by DFT calculations,which indicated good adherence of Pt to MnV_(2)O_(6),beneficial for electrocatalyst stability.

In Europe, 30% to 50% of liver transplantations are currently due to alcoholic liver disease(ALD). In the United states, this percentage is 17.2%. Post-transplantsurvival and other predictors of clinical course do not differ significantly from those in other types of transplanted patients, as long as there is no relapse of drinking. However, 20%-25% of these patients lapse or relapse to heavy drinking post-operatively, which has been associated with an increased risk of liver damage and mortality. It is therefore crucial to design specific selection and follow-up strategies aimed at this particular type of patient. several good and poor prognosis factors that could help to predict a relapse have been suggested, among them the duration of abstinence, social support, a family history of alcoholism, abuse diagnosis versus alcohol dependence, non-acceptance of diagnosis related to alcohol use, presence of severe mental illness, nonadherence in a broad sense, number of years of alcoholism, and daily quantity of alcohol consumption. In this article, we discuss these and other, more controversial factors in selecting ALD patients for liver transplantation. Abstinence should be the main goal after transplantation in an ALD patient. In this article, we review the several definitions of post-transplant relapse, its monitoring and the psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment.
