Dietary omega-3 Fatty Acids Deficiency Affects the Glutamatergic Transport System in Rat Retina:Modulatory Effects after High Intraocular Pressure

Glutamate excitotoxicity has been postulated as a putative mechanism involved in the physiopathology of glaucoma, a disease that can cause retinal cell damage. Thus, the modulation of glutamatergic parameters is a putative therapeutic target to prevent excitotoxic retinal injury. Here, we investigated the effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids (w3) in the retinal glutamate transport system in basal and ischemic conditions. Female Wistar rats were divided into two groups: w3 diet (w3 group) and w3 deficient-diet (D group). Their pups, at 60 days old, were used for the experiments. Retinal ischemia, a mechanism involved in the physiopathology of glaucoma, was induced by high intraocular pressure (HIoP, 140 180 mmHg for 45 min) to impair retinal blood flow. Analyses were performed 7 days after ischemia. The D group showed a decreased glutamate uptake in basal conditions and after HIoP when compared to the w3 group. After HIoP, there was a decrease in glutamate uptake in the D group that was not observed in the w3 group (p oncerning glutamate transporters, the w3 group presented higher levels of GLT-1 compared to the D group in basal and ischemic conditions. After HIoP, EAAC1 was increased in both groups, while GLT-1 increased only in the D group, compared to basal levels. GLAST and EAAT5 presented no alterations. The modulation of the glutamatergic system by dietary w3 fatty acids points to a potential mechanism by which w3 PUFAs exert beneficial effects in the retina.

The corpus cavernosum after treatment with dutasteride or finasteride： a histomorphometric study in a benign prostatic hyperplasia rodent model

Erectile dysfunction is a common side effect of finasteride and dutasteride treatments. The objective of this study was to investigate the structural changes in the penis using a benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） rodent model treated with dutasteride or finasteride. Sixty male rats were divided into the following groups： C, untreated control rats; C ＋ D, control rats receiving dutasteride; C ＋ F, control rats receiving finasteride; H, untreated spontaneously hypertensive rats （SHRs）; H ＋ D, SHRs treated with dutasteride; and H ＋ F, SHRs treated with finasteride. Treatments were performed for 40 days, and penises were collected immediately thereafter. The organs were analyzed using histomorphometric methods to determine the cross-sectional penile area, as well as the surface density （Sv） of smooth muscle fibers, connective tissue, elastic system fibers, and sinusoidal spaces of the corpus cavernosum. The results were compared using a one-way ANoVA with Bonferroni＇s posttest. Groups C ＋ D and C ＋ F had a significantly smaller penile cross-sectional area, but more elastic system fiber Sv compared to Group C. Group C ＋ D showed less smooth muscle Sv, and Group H showed more connective tissue but a smaller sinusoidal space Sv in the corpus cavernosum compared to Group C. Groups H ＋ D and H ＋ F had less smooth muscle Sv than Group H. Group H ＋ D also had more connective tissue and elastic system fiber Sv than Group H. Both dutasteride and finasteride promoted penile modifications in the control rat penis, although this affect was ~reater in Group H animals. In this rodent model, dutasteride was the drug that most affected the corpus cavernosum.

Immediate and late effects of chronic stress in the testes of prepubertal and adult rats

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic stress on the testes of prepubertal and adult rats and to evaluate whether any alterations could be reversed when stress induction is ended. Seventy-six male rats were assigned to eight groups depending on the type of treatment （control or stressed）, the age at which stress was initiated （prepubertal or adult）, and the time of evaluation （immediate or late）. Stress stimuli were applied for 6 weeks. Stressed prepubertal and adult rats evaluated immediately after the last stress stimulus were included in SP-I and SA-I groups, respectively. The late prepubertal （SP-L） and adult （SA-L） groups of stressed rats were evaluated 6 weeks after the last stress stimulus. Age-matched rats were used as controls （CP-I, CA-I, CP-L, and CA-L groups）. Application of stress stimuli to rats in the SP-I group resulted in body weight and seminiferous tubule diameter reduction. The rats in the SA-I group also showed several functional （testosterone level and sperm parameter） and morphological （testicular weight and seminiferous tubule diameter） reductions. The rats in the SP-L group showed increased body weight and intertubular compartment volumetric and absolute densities and reduced tubular compartment volumetric density. The rats in the SA-L group presented only reduced sperm viability. Stress stimuli promoted changes in the rats in all the study groups. The testes of the adult rats were the most affected by chronic stress. However, the stressed adult rats recovered well from the testicular alterations.

BACKGRoUND Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease corresponds to a clinical entity that affects liver function triggered by the accumulation of fat in the liver and is linked with metabolic *** To evaluate the effects of the intragastric balloon(IGB)in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease through the assessment of liver enzymes,imaging and several metabolic *** A comprehensive search was done of multiple electronic databases(MEDLINE,EMBASE,LILACS,Cochrane and Google Scholar)and grey literature from their inception until February *** criteria involved patients with a body mass index>25 kg/m2 with evidence or previous diagnosis of hepatic *** analyzed before and after 6 mo of IGB removal were alanine aminotransferase(IU/L),gamma-glutamyltransferase(IU/L),glycated hemoglobin(%),triglycerides(mg/dL),systolic blood pressure(mmHg),homeostatic model assessment,abdominal circumference(cm),body mass index(kg/m2)and liver volume(cm3).RESULTS Ten retrospective cohort studies evaluating a total of 508 patients were *** 6 mo of IGB placement,this significantly reduced alanine aminotransferase[mean difference(MD):10.2,95%confidence interval(CI):8.12-12.3],gammaglutamyltransferase(MD:9.41,95%CI:6.94-11.88),glycated hemoglobin(MD:0.17%,95%CI:0.03-0.31),triglycerides(MD:38.58,95%CI:26.65-50.51),systolic pressure(MD:7.27,95%CI:4.79-9.76),homeostatic model assessment(MD:2.23%,95%CI:1.41-3.04),abdominal circumference(MD:12.12,95%CI:9.82-14.41)and body mass index(MD:5.07,95%CI:4.21-5.94).CoNCLUSIoN IGB placement showed significant efficacy in improving alanine aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyltransferase levels in patients with metabolic dysfunctionassociated fatty liver disease as well as improving metabolic markers related to disease progression.

Background:An increase in life expectancy has led to an increased elderly *** turn,this aging population is more likely to develop health conditions,such as pelvic floor disorders(PFDs).This study aimed to assess the prevalence of these disorders and the associated quality of life in institutionalized and noninstitutionalized elderly *** and methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted with 80 female participants older than 60 years,divided into 2 groups:institutionalized and noninstitutionalized *** Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory Short-Form and a sociodemographic questionnaire were used.A chi-squared test was used to assess the differences in prevalence between ***:There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in the prevalence of PFDs or quality of *** this study,the prevalence of PFDs was higher than that reported *** institutionalized women,a higher prevalence of PFDs and impaired quality of life were expected,although not ***:There was a higher prevalence of pelvic disorders and impaired quality of life due to these disorders in elderly women.

This work proposed an architectural alternative project of a stainless steel roof structure that uses roof tiles also in stainless steel with emphasis on roofs for multi-sport *** the development of the work,two existing multi-sports gymnasiums are taken as a reference,but with ASTM(American Society for Testing and Materials)A36 steel roof *** proposed cover system uses cables and light gauge profiles,in commercial stainless steel,which reduces the weight and of course the final price of the roof structure.A structure that presents technical feasibility is obtained and analyzed by checking its behavior with respect to the efforts and displacements generated by the combinations of the acting loads,following the safety recommendations of the applicable *** is verified that using the stainless steel structure proposed in this work would cost 42%of the reference structure if this were in AISI(American Iron and Steel Institute)304 stainless *** this cost tends to be minimized due to greater durability and consequent reduction in maintenance costs of this type of steel.
