High-resolution multi-scale air pollution system:Evaluation of modelling performance and emission control strategies

A high percentage of the world's population lives in areas where air pollutant concentrations exceed the World Health Organization guidelines.This work aims to develop and test,a high-resolution multi-scale air pollution modelling system by integrating a set of adequate tools.This system is able to provide detailed air pollutant concentrations in urban areas and support air quality management strategies through a better identification of different atmospheric processes.It also allows furthering the design and assessment of air pollution control measures for a specific area.To evaluate its performance and suitability,the system was applied to the Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR),China,one of the most densely populated areas on earth,during a winter period when this area is affected by high levels of Particulate Matter(PM).Although the developed system tends to underestimate the PM concentrations,it revealed a good performance in reproducing the temporal and spatial air pollution patterns.Several exceedances of the Chinese air quality standards were calculated and high population exposure to PM pollution was estimated.The tested urban atmospheric emission reduction scenarios have shown air quality improvements,indicating that emission reduction measures at urban level should focus on the domestic sector.However,it is crucial to implement joint pollution prevention strategies with neighbouring regions to improve the air quality in Macao SAR.The approach developed in this work can support policymakers in defining new strategies to reduce atmospheric pollution in urban areas.

Parkinson’s disease(PD)was first described as a neurological disease by Dr.James Parkinson in 1817 as a“shaking palsy”.Since that time,much more is known about the pathophysiology of PD yet the disease is still uncurable.The hallmark of the disease is often considered Lewy body neural inclusions in the substantia nigra pars compacta and other brain areas,although not all patients have these inclusions.The patients exhibit massive neuronal cell loss in the substantia nigra pars compacta,which is associated with the motor symptoms of tremor,bradykinesia,rigidity,and postural instability.PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease with a prevalence of around 1%of individuals over the age of 60.

Secondary forests and human-made forest gaps are conspicuous features of tropical landscapes.Yet,behavioral responses to these aspects of anthropogenically modified forests remain poorly investigated.Here,we analyze the effects of small human-made clearings and secondary forests on tropical bats by examining the guild-and species-level activity patterns of phyllostomids sampled in the Central Amazon,Brazil.Specifically,we contrast the temporal activity patterns and degree of temporal overlap of 6 frugivorous and 4 gleaning animalivorous species in old-growth forest and second-growth forest and of 4 frugivores in old-growth forest and forest clearings.The activity patterns of frugivores and gleaning animalivores did not change between old-growth forest and second-growth,nor did the activity patterns of frugivores between old-growth forest and clearings.However,at the species level,we detected significant differences for Artibeus obscurus(old-growth forest vs.second-growth)and A.concolor(old-growth forest vs.clearings).The degree of temporal overlap was greater than random in all sampled habitats.However,for frugivorous species,the degree of temporal overlap was similar between old-growth forest and second-growth;whereas for gleaning animalivores,it was lower in second-growth than in old-growth forest.On the contrary,forest clearings were characterized by increased temporal overlap between frugivores.Changes in activity patterns and temporal overlap may result from differential foraging opportunities and dissimilar predation risks.Yet,our analyses suggest that activity patterns of bats in second-growth and small forest clearings,2 of the most prominent habitats in humanized tropical landscapes,varies little from the activity patterns in old-growth forest.

What is the effect of Tribulus terrestris on testicular morphology and sperm production?An experimental study in the rat model

The objective of this study was to investigate whether treatment with Tribulus terrestris(Tt)has any impact on the testicular morphology and function in a rodent model.Twenty male rats were divided into a control group and a group receiving 100 mg kg^(-1) body weight of Tt supplementation.After 4o days of experiment,the animals were submitted to euthanasia;epididymal tail spermatozoa were collected;and spermatozoa concentration,motility,and viability were analyzed.In addition,testicles were collected and processed for histomorphometrical analyses.Data were compared using the Student's t-test and considered significant when Pfference between the groups.further,testicular weight and volume,seminiferous tubule diameter,tunica propria surface density,seminiferous epithelium surface density,and intertubular compartment surface density were statistically similar between the groups.However,seminiferous epithelium height and tubular lumen surface density were augmented in animals treated with Tt.Treatment with Tt does not cause a major impact on testicular morphology,promoting only subtle modifications.No difference on spermatozoa parameters was observed.

functional recovery from central nervous system (CNS) trauma depends not only on axon regeneration or compensatory sprouting of uninjured fibers but also on the ability of newly grown axons to establish functional synapses with appropriate targets.Although several studies have successfully promoted long-distance axonal regeneration in distinct CNS injury models,none of them have resulted in a viable therapeutic approach for patient recovery.A possible reason may be the lack of new synaptogenesis for reestablishing the circuitry lost after injury.Herein,we discuss how our understanding of the mechanisms that instruct synapse formation in the injured nervous system may contribute to the design of new strategies to promote functional restoration in traumatic CNS disorders.

Towards the automation of book typesetting

This paper proposes a generative approach for the automatic typesetting of books in desktop publishing.The presented system consists in a computer script that operates inside a widely used design software tool and implements a generative process based on several typographic rules,styles and principles which have been identified in the literature.The performance of the proposed system is tested through an experiment which included the evaluation of its outputs with people.The results reveal the ability of the system to consistently create varied book designs from the same input content as well as visually coherent book designs with different contents while complying with fundamental typographic principles.

Prevalence and risk factors for acquired long QT syndrome in the emergency department:a retrospective observational study

BACKGROUND: Long QT syndrome(LQTS) is a heterogeneous syndrome that may be congenital or, more frequently, acquired. The real-world prevalence of acquired LQTS(aLQTS) in the emergency department(ED) remains to be determined. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence of aLQTS and its impact on symptoms on ED admissions.METHODS: Electrocardiograms(ECG) of 5,056 consecutively patients admitted in the ED of a tertiary hospital between January 28th and March 17th of 2020 were reviewed. All patients with aLQTS were included. Clinical data with a focus on QT prolonging drugs and clinical factors were recorded. Statistical comparison was made between the groups with and without corrected QT(QTc) interval greater than 500 ms(value that is considered severely increased).RESULTS: A total of 383 ECGs with prolonged QTc were recognized, corresponding to a prevalence of aLQTS at admission of 7.82%. Patients with aLQTS were more commonly men(53.3%) with an age of(73.49±14.79) years old and QTc interval of(505.3±32.4) ms. Only 20.4% of these patients with aLQTS were symptomatic. No ventricular arrhythmias were recorded. Patients with QT interval greater than 500 ms were more frequently female(59.5%;Pfrequently on QT prolonging drugs(77.3%;P=0.025). Main contributing factor was intake of antibiotics(odds ratio [OR] 4.680) followed by female gender(OR 2.473) and intake of antipsychotics(OR 1.925).CONCLUSION: aLQTS is particularly prevalent in the ED. female patients on antibiotics and antipsychotics are at particularly high risk. Efforts must be made to avoid, detect and treat aLQTS as early as possible.

In-service performance of emergency shutdown valves and dependent operational relationships in the offshore oil and gas industry

Industrial process plants use emergency shutdown valves(ESDVs)as safety barriers to protect against hazardous events,bringing the plant to a safe state when potential danger is detected.These ESDVs are used extensively in offshore oil and gas processing plants and have been mandated in the design of such systems from national and international standards and legislation.This paper has used actual ESDV operating data from four mid/late life oil and gas production platforms in the North Sea to research operational relationships that are of interest to those responsible for the technical management and operation of ESDVs.The first of the two relationships is between the closure time(CT)of the ESDV and the time it remains in the open position,prior to the close command.It has been hypothesised that the CT of the ESDV is affected by the length of time that it has been open prior to being closed(Time since the last stroke).In addition to the general analysis of the data series,two sub-categories were created to further investigate this possible relationship for CT and these are“above mean”and“below mean”.The correlations(Pearson's based)resulting from this analysis are in the“weak”and“very weak”categories.The second relationship investigated was the effect of very frequent closures to assess if this improves the CT.ESDV operational records for six subjects were analysed to find closures that occurred within a 24 h period of each other.However,no discriminating trend was apparent where CT was impacted positively or negatively by the frequent closure group.It was concluded that the variance of ESDV closure time cannot be influenced by the technical management of the ESDV in terms of scheduling the operation of the ESDV.

Novel therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondria as a gateway in neurodegeneration

In recent years, multiple disciplines have focused on mitochondrial biology and contributed to understanding its relevance towards adult-onset neurodegenerative disorders. These are complex dynamic organelles that have a variety of functions in ensuring cellular health and homeostasis. The plethora of mitochondrial functionalities confers them an intrinsic susceptibility to internal and external stressors(such as mutation accumulation or environmental toxins), particularly so in long-lived postmitotic cells such as neurons. Thus, it is reasonable to postulate an involvement of mitochondria in aging-associated neurological disorders, notably neurodegenerative pathologies including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. On the other hand, biological effects resulting from neurodegeneration can in turn affect mitochondrial health and function, promoting a feedback loop further contributing to the progression of neuronal dysfunction and cellular death. This review examines state-of-the-art knowledge, focus on current research exploring mitochondrial health as a contributing factor to neuroregeneration, and the development of therapeutic approaches aimed at restoring mitochondrial homeostasis in a pathological setting.
