通过对加速管道流瞬态壁面摩擦阻力及湍流行为的实验研究,并将改进的统计平均法应用于实验数据的处理。结果表明,加速管道流瞬态时均壁面切应力较稳态壁面切应力存在明显差异,工况1中最大差值接近于稳态值的2倍。流动加速率的降低和初始流量的增加缩短了湍流的滞后段,减小了瞬态壁面切应力与稳态值的差别。瞬态壁面切应力及湍流的发展可分为4个典型阶段,前2个阶段为湍流的滞后期,流动惯性占据主导地位,后2个阶段为湍流的发展阶段。

One-year experience with the Cochlear^(TM) Paediatric Implanted Recipient Observational Study(Cochlear P-IROS) in New Delhi, India

Background： Currently, there is a significant lack of data concerning long-term outcomes following paediatric cochlear implantation in terms of quality of life. There is a need for a long-term, prospective study in this regard. This study aims at highlighting the preliminary results, one year post surgery of a five year prospective study. Methods： The CochlearTM Paediatric Implanted Recipient Observational Study （P-IROS） is a prospective, patient outcomes registry for routinely implanted children. The study collects data using questionnaires post-surgery and at regular intervals up to five years. Results： At our Centre, 159 cochlear implant surgery procedures were carried out between January 2014 and December 2014. Category of Auditory Performance II score increased from ‘0＇ to ‘3＇ at six months and to ‘5＇ at 12 months for children aged 0-3 years, although this was not statistically significant. However, the same trend was statistically significant for the age 3-6 year and age 6-10 year brackets. The quality of life of the child improved significantly. Analysis of communication mode revealed a statistically significant overall shift to the auditory-oral mode from total communication. Conclusion： Cochlear implantation is a life-changing intervention. The evidence in support of what it can achieve safely is clear. However, the costs associated with it raise the question if it will remain an effective option for life in all children. The Cochlear P-IROS is an attempt to answer the same over a five year period. Our study in New Delhi, so far concludes that cochlear implantation in a population with limited access to funds is very effective, one year after surgery.

A study of the correlation between dengue and weather in Kandy City, Sri Lanka (2003 -2012) and lessons learned

Background:Weather variables affect dengue transmission.This study aimed to identify a dengue weather correlation pattern in Kandy,Sri Lanka,compare the results with results of similar studies,and establish ways for better control and prevention of dengue.Method:We collected data on reported dengue cases in Kandy and mid-year population data from 2003 to 2012,and calculated weekly incidences.We obtained daily weather data from two weather stations and converted it into weekly data.We studied correlation patterns between dengue incidence and weather variables using the wavelet time series analysis,and then calculated cross-correlation coefficients to find magnitudes of correlations.Results:We found a positive correlation between dengue incidence and rainfall in millimeters,the number of rainy and wet days,the minimum temperature,and the night and daytime,as well as average,humidity,mostly with a five-to seven-week lag.Additionally,we found correlations between dengue incidence and maximum and average temperatures,hours of sunshine,and wind,with longer lag periods.Dengue incidences showed a negative correlation with wind run.Conclusion:Our results showed that rainfall,temperature,humidity,hours of sunshine,and wind are correlated with local dengue incidence.We have suggested ways to improve dengue management routines and to control it in these times of global warming.We also noticed that the results of dengue weather correlation studies can vary depending on the data analysis.

Use of Smartphones for Rapid Location Tracking in Mega Scale Soil Sampling

Conventional, grid-based sampling location tracking approach with GPS or topographic maps is time-consuming and inconvenient. Therefore, this study combined the freely available virtual/digital globe with recent advancements of smartphone geo-browsers to develop a new sampling location tracking approach. The sampling frame was developed with pre-uploaded point map formulated in GIS environment by combining land-use map and one-kilometer grid with center coordinates. The sampling location grid was uploaded to smartphone and each point was tracked with Google Map path finder using point ID (coded grid coordinate) when searching each sampling location. The suitability of the new approach was tested for soil sample collection from paddy lands distributed in 0.9 million hectares in Sri Lanka. The sampling locations could be reached conveniently with the help of Google path-finder voice direction guide and optional routes. The efficiency of new approach was found to be remarkably high, i.e., over 99% of the 9000 sampling points, which were spread across Sri Lanka having an area of 65,610 km2. All sampling points in the country could be covered with twelve member field investigation crew who were guided through smartphones uploaded with sampling point grid on six motorbikes within 60 days. The new sampling location tracking approach is effective in terms of cost, time, human resource requirements, thus can be adopted in large-scale soil/plant sampling frames with high accuracy.
