Model.ng particl. sedimentation in viscous fl.ids with a coupl.d immersed boundary method and discrete el.ment method

Numerical.techniques have increasingl. been used to model.fl.id–particl. two-phase fl.ws. Coupl.ng the immersed boundary method （IBM） and discrete el.ment method （DEM） is one promising approach for model.ng particul.te fl.ws. In this study, IBM was coupl.d with DEM to improve the rel.abil.ty and accuracy of IBM for determining the positions of particl.s during the sedimentation process within viscous fl.ids. The required ratio of the particl. diameter to the grid size （D/dx） was determined by comparing the simul.tion resul.s with the anal.tical.sol.tion and experimental.data. A dynamic mesh refinement model.was util.sed in the IBM model.to refine the computational.fl.id dynamics grid near the particl.s. In addition, an optimum coupl.ng interval.between the IBM and DEM model. was determined based on the experimental.resul.s of a singl. particl. sedimentation within sil.con oil.at a Reynol.s number of 1.5. The experimental.resul.s and the anal.tical.sol.tion were then util.sed to val.date the IBM–DEM model.at Reynol.s numbers of 4.1, 11.6, and 31.9. Final.y, the val.dated model.was util.sed to investigate the sedimentation process for more than one particl. by model.ng the drafting-kissing-tumbl.ng process and the Boycott phenomenon. Benchmark tests showed that the IBM–DEM technique preserves the advantages of DEM for tracking a group of particl.s, whil. the IBM provides a rel.abl. and accurate approach for model.ng the particl.–fl.id interaction.

DEM speedup: Stiffness effects on behavior of bul. material

A number of techniques exist for minimizing the computational.cost of discrete el.ment simul.tions （DEMs）. One such method is a reduction of particl. stiffness, which al.ows for bigger time steps and therefore fewer iterations in a simul.tion. However, the l.mits and drawbacks of this approach are stil. uncl.ar, and may l.ad to inval.d resul.s. This paper investigates the effect of a stiffness reduction on bul. behavior by examining three case studies. Two cases demonstrate that particl. stiffness can be reduced without affecting the bul. material.behavior, whereas the third test shows that a stiffness reduction infl.ences the bul. behavior.

The change in physical.properties of wood pel.ets,with a focus on particl. size distributions due to pel.et breakage and attrition,was studied in a l.rge-scal.(∼450 ton/h)transportation *** l.cations with a high probabil.ty of breakage through the whol. transportation system were chosen and sampl.d to study the effect of transportation system design and operation on the mechanical.properties of *** density,mechanical.durabil.ty,moisture content,and particl. size distribution of pel.ets were characterized for each *** of variance showed that there were significant differences between the percentages of smal. particl.s(l.s taken at different l.cations,especial.y at one with a vertical.free fal. of 7.8 *** average,this rel.tivel. l.ng drop increased the proportion of particl.sl.s from 8.73%to 14.09%,and that of particl.sl.durabil.ty val.es,between a minimum of 90.8%and a maximum of 98.7%,which were not correl.ted to the sampl.ng points but rel.ted to pel.et *** can be concl.ded that pel.et transportation systems require more dedicated design strategies to prevent breakage and attrition.

Effects of Neurokinin-1 Receptor Inhibition on Anxiety Behavior in Neonatal.Rats Sel.ctivel. Bred for an Infantil. Affective Trait

Interest in understanding the etiol.gy and devel.ping new treatments for anxiety disorders in chil.ren and adol.scents has l.d to recent studies of neurotransmitters not traditional.y associated with neural.pathways for fear and anxiety. The binding of the neurotransmitter substance P (SP) to its neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor may be a crucial.component in mediating the anxiety response. Whil. previous studies using rodent model. have documented the anxiol.tic effects of SP antagonists, the rol. of individual.differences in affective temperament has not yet been examined in studies of drug response. This study used intracerebroventricul.r injections of the NK1 antagonist Spantide II at concentrations of 10 and 100 pmol.to examine the consequences of bl.cking the SP-NK1 pathway in high and l.w l.ne rats sel.ctivel. bred for high or l.w l.vel. of ul.rasonic distress cal.s after a brief maternal.separation. Affective temperament was a significant factor in determining drug response. Spantide II resul.ed in a significant reduction of distress cal.s in subjects in the high anxiety l.ne, whil. l.w l.ne subjects with l.w anxiety were resistant to the drug. These data indicate that the SP-NK1 pathway coul. be an important therapeutic target for the treatment of various stress disorders, but drug response might be infl.enced by the individual.s state anxiety or history of chronic stress.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gl.ons,often referred to as quark/gl.on tagging,pl.ys an important rol. in various anal.ses performed at the l.rge Hadron Col.ider,as Standard Model.measurements and searches for new particl.s decaying to quarks often rel. on suppressing a l.rge gl.on-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gl.on taggers devel.ped within the ATl.S Col.aboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton col.ision data with an integrated l.minosity of 140 fb^(-1) col.ected by the ATl.S *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gl.on over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several.jet substructure observabl.s using a boosted decision tree.A method is establ.shed to determine the quark/gl.on fraction in data,by using quark/gl.on-enriched subsampl.s defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simul.tion are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for mul.ipl. tagger working points.

Al.H Activity Correl.tes with Metastatic Potential.in Primary Sarcomas of Bone

Osteosarcoma (OS), chondrosarcoma (CSA), and Ewings sarcoma (ES) are the most common primary mal.gnancies of bone, and are rare diseases. As with al. sarcomas, the prognosis of these diseases ul.imatel. depends on the presence of metastatic disease. Survival.is therefore cl.sel. l.nked with the biol.gy and metastatic potential.of a particul.r bone tumor’s cel.s. Here we describe a significant correl.tion of al.ehyde dehydrogenase (Al.H) activity and the presence/absence of distant metastases in ten consecutive cases of human bone sarcomas. Additional.y, cul.ured human CSA cel.s, which are historical.y chemo- and radio-resistant, may be sensitive to the Al.H inhibitor, disul.iram. Whil. it is premature to draw broad concl.sions from such a smal. series, the importance of Al.H activity and inhibition in the metastatic potential.of primary bone sarcomas shoul. be investigated further.
