Effect of high-strength ammonia nitrogen acclimation on sludge activity in sequencing batch reactor

The effect of high-strength ammonia nitrogen acclimation on sludge activity in sequencing batch reactor （SBR） was investigated. Two batch experiments, RUN1 and RUN2, were conducted with the influent ammonia nitrogen concentrations 60 and 500 mg/L, respectively. The sludges inoculated from RUN1 and RUN2 were used to treat a series of influent with ammonia nitrogen concentrations of 59, 232, 368, 604 and 1152 mg/L. It is found that the activated sludge acclimated to higher ammonia nitrogen concentrations revealed higher COD and NH 4 ＋ -N removal efficiencies, and slower DHA decrease. The results confirmed that the activities of the bacteria in activated sludge in SBR were inhibited by high-strength ammonia nitrogen, whereas the activated sludge acclimated to high-strength ammonia nitrogen showed substantial resistance to inhibition by influents containing high levels of ammonia nitrogen.

Using different endothelial/smooth muscle cell co-culture modes to simulate the intimal structure of blood vessels, the water filtration rate and the infiltration/accumulation of LDL of the cultured cell layers were studied. The three cell culture modes of the study were: (i) The endothelial cell monolayer (EC/Φ); (ii) endothelial cells directly co-cultured on the smooth muscle cell monolayer (EC-SMC); (iii) endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells cultured on different sides of a Millicell-CM membrane (EC/SMC). It was found that under the same condition, the water filtration rate was the lowest for the EC/SMC mode and the highest for the EC/Φ mode, while the infiltration/accumulation of DiI-LDLs was the lowest in the EC/Φ mode and the highest in the EC-SMC mode. It was also found that DiI-LDL infiltration/accumulation in the cultured cell layers increased with the increasing water filtration rate. The results from the in vitro model study therefore suggest that the infiltration/accumulation of the lipids within the arterial wall is positively correlated with concentration polarization of atherogenic lipids, and the integrity of the endothelium plays an important role in the penetration and accumulation of atherogenic lipids in blood vessel walls.

Fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy (FFS) technique is capable of monitoring changes in concentration, mass, size and structure of fluorescent-labeled bio-molecules in microscopic volume and is suitable for measuring biological interactions in living cells. FFS data may be affected by many experimental factors in complicated biological systems. Using a Monte Carlo approach, we generate fluorescence fluctuation data for different experimental systems. This approach helps to separate the contributions by different experimental factors in a complicated fluorescence fluctuation spectrum. It also helps to validate new theoretical models and new fitting formulations. We describe the algorithm of the simulation program and tests on its statistical performance. The program is then used successfully to study the effects of several experimental factors on FFS detection.

Permutation polynomials have been an interesting subject of study for a long time and have applications in many areas of mathematics and engineering. However, only a small number of specific classes of permutation polynomials are known so far. In this paper, six classes of linearized permutation polynomials and six classes of nonlinearized permutation polynomials over F33m are presented. These polynomials have simple shapes, and they are related to planar functions.

This paper studies the bending of simple-supported rectangular plate on point supports, line supports and elastic foundation. On the basis of three-dimensional elasticity theory, the exact expressions of the displacement functions, which satisfy the governing differential equations and the simply supported boundary conditions at four edges of the plate, are analytically derived. The reaction forces of the in- termediate supports are regarded as the unknown external forces acting on the lower surface of the plate. The unknown coefficients are then determined by the boundary conditions on the upper and lower surfaces of the plate. Comparing the numerical results obtained from the proposed method to those obtained from Kirchhoff plate theory, Mindlin plate theory and those obtained from the commer- cial finite element software ANSYS, the high accuracy of the present method has been demonstrated.

The micromechanical behaviors and mechanics-optics coupling effects of optic-fiber-concrete complex in the distributed optic-fiber sensing concrete-crack technology,which was used in health monitoring of Wu Gorge Bridge on Yangtze River and a large dam successfully,have been investigated.A micromechanical theoretical analysis method and micromechanical frictional contact bi-interface model,as well as a modified optical theoretical analysis method of the mechanics-optics coupling effects are presented.A series of verification experiments,including mechanical experiments and mechanics-optics coupling experiments,have been *** results of micromechanical theoretical analysis and the analysis of the modified theory of mechanics-optics coupling along with mechanical and optical experimental data are shown to be in close *** the micromechanical theory and the modified theory of mechanics-optics coupling with their analysis methods can not only enhance credibility of this novel distributed sensing technology but also provide a way to understand its sensing mechanism and optimize its technical details and system.

Two novel endo-β-1,4-glucanases,EG45 and EG27,were isolated from the gastric juice ofmollusca,Ampullaria crossean,by anion exchange,hydrophobic interaction,gel filtration and a secondround of anion exchange *** purified proteins EG45 and EG27 appeared as a single bandon sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with a molecular mass of 45 kDa and 27 kDa,*** optimum pH for CMC activity was 5.5 for EG45 and 4.4-4.8 for *** optimumtemperature range for EG27 was broad,between 50℃ and 60℃;for EG45 it was 50℃.The analysis on thestability of these two endo-β-1,4-glucanases showed that EG27 was acceptably stable at pH 3.0-11.0 evenwhen the incubation time was prolonged to 24 h at 30℃,whereas EG45 remained relatively stable at *** 85% of the activity of EG27 could be retained upon incubation at 60℃ for 24 ***,less than 10% residual activity of EG45 was detected at 50℃.Among different kinds of substrates,bothenzymes showed a high preference for carboxymethyl ***45,in particular,showed a carboxymethylcellulose hydrolytic activity of 146.5 IU/mg *** enzymes showed low activities to xylan (from oatspelt) and Sigmacell 101,and they were inactive to p-nitrophenyl-β-D-cellobioside,salicin and starch.

Auxin distribution during embryogenesis and seed germination were studied with transgenic Arabidopsis plants expressing GUS gene driven by a synthetic DR5 promoter,an auxin responsive promoter. The results showed that GUS activity is higher in ends of hypophysis and cotyledon primordia of heart-, torpedo- and cotyledon-stage embryos, leaf tip area, lateral root primordia, root apex and cotyledon of young seedlings. And GUS accumulated in root apex of the seedlings grown on auxin transport inhibitor containing media. All these suggested that above-mentioned part of the organs and tissues have a higher level of auxin, and auxin polar transport inhibitor could cause the accumulation of auxin in root apex. And auxin transport inhibitor also resulted in aberration of Arabidopsis leaf pattern formation, root gravitropism and elongation.

Silica is the major component of the acid leaching residue of asbestos tailing. The waterglass solution can be prepared by the reaction of the residue with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution. Compared to the high temperature reaction method, this process is environmental friendly and low cost. In this paper, the reaction process of the residue and the sodium hydroxide aqueous solution is optimized. The optimum reaction process parameters are as follows: the usage of sodium hydroxide is 26.4 g/100 g acid leaching residue, the reaction temperature is 90℃, the reaction time is 1 h, and the ratio of the liquid/solid is 2.0. The significance sequence of the process parameters to the alkali leaching reaction effect is the usage of sodium hydroxide > the ratio of the liquid/solid > the reaction time > the reaction temperature. The significance sequence to the leaching ratio of SiO2 is the ratio of the liquid/solid > the usage of sodium hydroxide > the reaction time > the reaction temperature. The significance sequence to the modulus of the sodium silicate is the ratio of the liquid/solid > the usage of sodium hydroxide > the reaction time > the reaction temperature. Under the optimum conditions, the leaching ratio of the SiO2 is 77.5%, and the modulus of the sodium silicate is 3.15. The XRD analysis result indicates that the major components of the alkali leaching residue are serpentine, talc, quartz and some albite.
