Wood anatomy chronologies of Scots pine in the foothills of the Western Sayan(Siberia)

Recent methodological advances in quantitative wood anatomy have provided new insights into the climatic responses of radial growth at the scale of cell structure of tree rings. This study considered long-term chronologies of tracheid measurements, indexed by a novel approach to separate their specific climatic responses from signal recorded in cell production(closely reflected in tree-ring width). To fill gaps in understanding the impact of climate on conifer xylem structure, Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris L.)trees > 200 years old were selected within the forest-steppe zone in southern Siberia. Such habitats undergo mild moisture deficits and the resulting climatic regulation of growth processes. Mean and maximum values of cell radial diameter and cell wall thickness were recorded for each tree *** a low level of climatogenic stress, components of cell chronologies independent of cambial activity were separated to obtain significant climatic signals revealing the timing of the specific stages of tracheid differentiation. Cell expansion lasted from mid-April to July and was impacted similarly to tree-ring width(stimulated by precipitation and stressed by heat), maximum cell size formed late June. A switch in the climatic responses of mean anatomical traits indicated transition to latewood in mid-July. Secondary wall deposition lasted until mid-September, suppressed by end of season temperatures. Generally, anatomical climatic responses were modulated by a less dry May and September compared with summer months.

In petroleum-producing territories of West Siberia(Russia),oil well gas flares have a thermal effect on nearby plant *** communities can be used as models for studying plant acclimation to global *** the present study on the effect of the hydrothermal regime at the flare sites on mesophyll and stomatal functional traits of Betula pubescens,leaves were collected from trees at250 m(control site[CS]),200,150 and 100 m(maximum impact site[MIS])from a *** the CS to MIS site,the average annual air temperature increased by 0.5℃and bog water level decreased by 17 *** plants from the MIS,stomata were 16%smaller and density was 20%lower compared to those at the CS,resulting in lower maximum stomatal conductance in plants from the MIS(mean±SE:MIS 0.84±0.05 mol·m^(-2)s^(-1),CS 1.24±0.06 mol·m^(-2)s^(-1);f=12.6,Pvolume was 1.9 times lower at MIS than at *** numbers per cell also declined with distance from the flares,from 21(MIS)to18(CS;f=15.6,Pvolume was 24%higher at the CS,whereas the number of mesophyll cells and chloroplasts numbers per unit leaf area were 1.9 and 1.8 times higher at the MIS than at the CS,*** a result,leaves from the MIS had a large total mesophyll cell(Ames/A)and chloroplast(Achl/A)surface area per unit leaf area,resulting in a 46%increase in mesophyll conductance in plants from the ***,structural changes in leaf epidermis consisted of a decrease in stomatal size and number,could lower transpiration losses with higher temperatures and less *** compensate for the reduction in leaf conductance due to a decrease in stomatal conductance under these conditions,an increase in the number of mesophyll cells and chloroplasts per unit area provides a greater gas-exchange area and mesophyll conductance.

A series of single-phase and color-tunable phosphors Sr_(2)La_(3)(SiO_(4))_(3)f:0.15Tb^(3+),xSm^(3+)(SLSOf:0.15Tb^(3+),xSm^(3+)) was prepared using solid-state *** X-ray diffraction(XRD) was used to characterize the phase of the as-prepared *** synthesized phosphors have apatite-type structure without other ***^(3+) and Tb^(3+) ions substitute La^(3+) into the lattice and form a single-phase solid *** elements are evenly distributed in the sample according to the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) *** crystal structure of the host phosphor was refined by the Rietveld *** optical properties were studied in detail by investigation of the luminescence and diffuse spectra,fluorescence decay curves and energy transfer *** phosphor color can be changed from green(0.29,0.48) to yellow/orange and red(0.57,0.42) via adjusting the doping ratio of Sm^(3+).The SLSOf:0.15Tb^(3+),xSm^(3+)phosphors can emit typical multicolor light such as green,yellow,orange and red with gradually increasing Sm^(3+)doping *** results indicate the occurrence of the energy transfer which results in the color-tunable properties of the phosphors.
