Assessment of muscle strength in para-athletes:A systematic review of observational studies

Accurate and reliable evaluation of muscle strength in para-athletes is essential for monitoring the effectiveness of strength training and/or rehabilitation programmes,and sport classification.Our aim is to synthesise evidence related to assessing muscle strength in para-athletes.Four databases were searched from January 1990 to July 2021 for observational studies focusing on strength assessment.Independent screening,data extraction,and quality assessment were performed in duplicate.A total of 1764 potential studies were identified.Thirty met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review.The mean age of participants was 30.7 years(standard deviation[SD]:2.4).The majority were men(88%)participating in wheelchair sports,including basketball,rugby,and tennis(23/30:76%).Overall quality varied,with more than half of the studies failing to identify strategies for dealing with confounding variables.Despite manual muscle testing being a standard component of para-sport classification systems,evidence examining strength characteristics in para-athletes is derived primarily from isometric and isokinetic testing.In studies that included comparative strength data,findings were mixed.Some studies found strength values were similar to or lower than able-bodied athletic controls.However,an important observation was that others reported higher shoulder strength in para-athletes taking part in wheelchair sports than both able-bodied and disabled non-athletes.Studies need to develop accessible,standardised strength testing methods that account for training influence and establish normative strength values in para-athletes.There is also a need for additional studies that include female para-athletes and para-athletes with greater functional impairments.

The undesirable dendrite growth induced by non-planar zinc(Zn)deposition and low coulombic efficiency resulting from severe side reactions have been long-standing challenges for metallic Zn anodes and substantially impede the practical application of rechargeable aqueous Zn metal batteries(ZMBs).Herein,we present a strategy for achieving a high-rate and long-cycle-life Zn metal anode by patterning Zn foil surfaces and endowing a Zn-Indium(Zn-In)interface in the microchannels.The accumulation of electrons in the microchannel and the zincophilicity of the Zn-In interface promote preferential heteroepitaxial Zn deposition in the microchannel region and enhance the tolerance of the electrode at high current densities.Meanwhile,electron aggregation accelerates the dissolution of non-(002)plane Zn atoms on the array surface,thereby directing the subsequent homoepitaxial Zn deposition on the array surface.consequently,the planar dendrite-free Zn deposition and long-term cycling stability are achieved(5,050 h at 10.0 mA cm^(−2) and 27,000 cycles at 20.0 mA cm^(−2)).Furthermore,a Zn/I_(2) full cell assembled by pairing with such an anode can maintain good stability for 3,500 cycles at 5.0 c,demonstrating the application potential of the as-prepared ZnIn anode for high-performance aqueous ZMBs.

Altered biomechanics due to amputation can contribute to substantial limitations,influencing sporting activities.Individuals with lower extremity amputations or congenital lower limb deficiency are encouraged to participate in para-sports.However,to compete in Paralympic sports,the candidate must have an impairment that results in lower extremity loss of function and meets or exceeds the sport's minimum impairment criteria(MIc).This review will focus on the MIc for competitive wheelchair tennis.Limb deficiency is known as one of the MIc used to regulate participation in competitive para-sports since it impacts gait,kinematics,and biomechanics of both the upper and lower body.Notwithstanding,it is questionable whether the MIc concerning limb deficiency is set at the correct level for determining eligibility for participating in Paralympic sports.This study aims to provide an overview of the evidence examining the impact of different partial foot amputation(PFA)levels on gait as a proxy for sporting performance.This scoping review will be based on a 6-step methodological framework and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis,extension for scoping reviews(PRISMA-ScR).Studies will be selected from PubMed,Embase,cINAHL,and SPORTDiscus.Two authors will screen the titles/abstracts independently.Selected studies will be scrutinised,and the same authors will extract data.Findings will be relevant to informing the evidence-based development of MIc for lower limb impairment after PFA and may be extrapolated to specific Paralympic sports,including wheelchair tennis.Results will be disseminated through scientific publications and conferences to audiences interested in Paralympic sports.

Background: confusion often arises in caring for diabetic foot infections and ulcers, especially with antimicrobials;we aim to shed light on this entity and alert healthcare workers to its stewardship. Methods: Records were reviewed between February 2016 and September 2023. Data for patients diagnosed with diabetes and foot ulcers, infected or not, were examined following IcD 9 search terms. Records for patients were included if they were prediabetic/diabetic adults with foot ulcers, more than 18 years old, and on antidiabetic treatment. Patients were excluded if they insulin resistant, with normal HgbA1c levels, wheel-chair dependent, bed-bound, non-diabetic patients, diabetic patients who had vascular lower limb surgery earlier to ulcers, diabetic patients who had aortocoronary bypass, deep venous thrombosis within six months, malignancy, and severe clinical depression. A modified IWGDF/IDSA guidelines definitions for DFI and DFU was considered. Statistical analysis was done using R programming. Statistical methods were employed as appropriate, and a significant P-value was considered for P Results: Most characteristics were well balanced between DFI and DFU, on imaging osteomyelitis and tissue swelling were significantly more in DFI. Endovascular radiological procedures showed angiograms to be considerably more in DFI, while angioplasty was more in DFU, in addition to smoking. Bacteremia was uncommon, and swab cultures were mostly polymicrobial in both ulcers;no clear association with blood bacteria was detected with the polymicrobial growth, though few were concordant. Antimicrobials prescribed for both ulcers were not statistically different except for carbapenems, which were more in DFI (P conclusion: Attention should be paid to best practices while caring for diabetic ulcers. These include swab culture interpretations, the use of antimicrobials, and plan management according to DFI or DFU to utilize either local care or combination with antimicrobials.

(+)-catechin(cE)is mainly found in green and black tea and has many biological effects,such as antiinflammatory,anti-cancer,anti-viral effects,protecting human organs,especially the kidney.This study aims to identify the circRNAs induced by cE in db/db mice and their roles in diabetic nephropathy progression.After the db/db mice were treated with cE,RNA-seq was performed to identify the differentially expressed circRNA and mRNAs.The ceRNA regulatory network was constructed and analyzed using bioinformatics software and public databases(cytoscape,clue GO,Mi RWalk,STRING,et al.).Our results revealed that 6 differentially expressed circRNAs are most associated with the cholinergic synapse,neurotrophin signaling pathway,and insulin signaling pathway.Among these,circRNA.5549 and circRNA.4712 might regulate cd36,cyp26 b1,c8 a,cyp2 j13,Grem2 genes through ceRNA regulatory mechanism in the presence of cE treatment.The expanded network of proteins interacting with these 5 genes shows that the TGF-βsignaling pathway,signaling pathways regulating pluripotency of stem cell,fat digestion and absorption,and PPAR signaling pathway was highly enriched.Overall,circRNA.5549 and circRNA.4712 exhibit a promotive function in cE-treated db/db mice,especially in circRNA.5549/miR-29a-5P/cd36 regulatory network,and this evidence suggest that their ceRNA regulatory network might be a therapeutic target for DN in humans.

铜尾矿是铜矿经过一系列工艺选矿完成后剩下的颗粒直径较小的沙粒,其堆存会带来诸多环境问题。铜尾矿结晶度高、活性低,许多研究人员探究激发活性后的铜尾矿作为混凝土等材料的辅料,但利用率较低。本文通过热-机械协同活化的方式激发铜尾矿的活性,分析活性铜尾矿水化胶凝性能,依据抗压强度、粒径分布及矿相成分微观结构变化分析水化反应效果。在此基础上,采用X射线衍射仪(XRD)、傅立叶变换红外光谱(FT-IR)和电子扫描电镜(SEM)对铜尾矿胶凝性能进行分析。研究结果表明:热-机械协同活化激发铜尾矿活性的力学性能有了很大提升,即铜尾矿在600℃、机械球磨时间80 min条件下,活性由5.60%上升至89.91%,抗压强度为10.87 MPa;XRD和FT-IR进一步分析出活化铜尾矿多处产生了水化c—S—H凝胶、N—A—S—H凝胶、钙矾石等胶凝物质,其形状多呈现絮凝状、棉团状及短棒状。本文研究为铜尾矿的进一步利用提供理论支撑。

Persea americana attenuates inflammatory response associated with hyperlipidemia in ovariectomized and irradiated rats by regulating MMP-3/TIMP-1 levels

Objective:To explore the effect of Persea americana supplementation on inflammation,oxidative stress,and lipid profiles in ovariectomized rats fed with a high-fat diet and exposed to radiation.Methods:The control group was sham operated,while groups 2-5 were ovariectomized and fed a high-fat diet.Groups 4 and 5 were exposed toγ-radiation(1 Gy/week for 5 weeks)after ovariectomy.Groups 3 and 5 were treated with 1 mL/250 g/day of Persea americana for one month.Serum levels of estrogen,alanine aminotransferase,aspartate aminotransferase,cholesterol,triglycerides and lipoproteins were measured.Additionally,hepatic oxidative stress,inflammatory and fibrogenic markers were evaluated.Results:Persea americana treatment reduced the oxidative stress markers as well as the levels of triglyceride,total cholesterol,and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,which in turn lowered hepatic fat accumulation.Moreover,it suppressed hepatic inflammatory mediators(interleukin-6,tumor necrosis factor-α,and c-reactive protein)and downregulated pro-fibrogenic markers(transforming growth factor-βand tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1).conclusions:Persea americana provides protection against ovariectomy,and gamma radiation-mediated hepatic inflammation not only through its antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,lipid-lowering effect but also by modulating the fibrogenic markers.

目的探究全麦粉对高脂喂养小鼠血糖、血脂水平及抗氧化能力的影响。方法32只3~4周龄雄性c57BL/6J小鼠随机分为4组,每组8只,正常对照组采用普通饲料喂养,高脂饮食组采用高脂饲料喂养,全麦粉组采用高脂饲料和全麦粉混合喂养,精麦粉组采用高脂饲料和精麦粉混合喂养。每周测量并记录小鼠体重和摄食量。9周后剪尾取血测定空腹血糖(FBG),眼球取血测定总胆固醇(Tc)、三酰甘油(TG)、低密度脂蛋白胆固醇(LDL-c)、高密度脂蛋白胆固醇(HDL-c)、超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(GSH-Px)和丙二醛(MDA)水平;处死后取脂肪组织称重。比较各组小鼠体重、总摄食量、Lee指数、脂肪指数、血糖、血脂和抗氧化指标。结果与正常对照组比较,高脂饮食组、全麦粉组和精麦粉组小鼠体重、总摄食量、Lee指数、脂肪指数和FBG升高,血清GSH-Px水平降低;高脂饮食组小鼠血清Tc、TG、LDL-c和MDA水平升高(均P0.05);全麦粉组和精麦粉组小鼠血清Tc、TG、LDL-c和MDA水平降低,血清GSH-Px水平升高(均P<0.05)。结论全麦粉可有效改善高脂喂养小鼠的血脂水平,提高抗氧化能力,但在本实验周期内全麦粉和精麦粉对小鼠的影响未表现出明显差异。

Degradation kinetics and mechanism of trace nitrobenzene by granular activated carbon enhanced microwave/hydrogen peroxide system

The kinetics of thedegradation of trace nitrobenzene （NB） by a granular activated carbon （GAc） enhanced microwave （MW）/hydrogen peroxide （H202 ） systemwas studied. Effects of pH, NB initial concentration and tert-butyl alcohol on the removal efficiencywere examined. Itwas found that the reaction rate fitswell to first-order reaction kinetics in the MW/GAc/H202 process. Moreover, GAc greatly enhanced thedegradation rate of NB inwater. Under a given condition （MW power300 W, H202dosage 10 mg/L, pH 6.85 and temperature （60 ± 5）°c）, thedegradation rate of NBwas 0.05214 min 1when4 g/L GAcwas added. In general, alkaline pHwas better for NBdegradation; however, the optimum pHwas 8.0 in the tested pH value range of4.0-12.0. At H202dosage of 10 mg/L and GAcdosage of4 g/L, the removal of NBwasdecreasedwith increasing initial concentrations of NB, indicating that a low initial concentrationwas beneficial for thedegradation of NB. These results indicated that the MW/GAc/H202 processwas effective for trace NBdegradation inwater. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis indicated that a hydroxyl radical addition reaction anddehydrogenation reaction enhanced NBdegradation.
