Introduction: Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the world and the treatments are being improved day by day. Although chemotherapy agents have begun to be used, side effects, resistance development and toxicity seen with these drugs are still steps that limit treatment. Objective: Our aim in this study is to show whether sodium selenate (NaS), which has different effects on many different cells, has antiproliferative and apoptotic effects on MCF-7 breast cancer cells, considering the dose-time relationship, and to reveal its effect on oxidant stress parameters. Methods: 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 μM sodium selenate was applied to the cells for 24, 48 and 72 hours. MTT test was applied to show the proliferative effect. Apoptosis was also measured with Annexin V/7AAD in MCF7 cells. Malondaldehyde (MDA) and Glutathione (GSH) levels were studied to reveal the oxidant/antioxidant balance. Results: It has been shown that as the NaS dose increases in MCF-7 cells, cell viability decreases (p 0.05), but at all subsequent increasing NaS doses, viability was found statistically significant decreased (p: 0.001, p 0.05, respectively). Conclusion: Considering that NaS has an antitumor effect on breast cancer, increases oxidative stress and increases apoptosis by supressing the antioxidant protection system, and does not have a toxic effect on normal body cells at certain doses. When all these features evaluated, we think, selenium should be considered as a natural option in the treatment of breast cancer.

青藏高原及其周缘褶皱-冲断带变形方式和时限是验证高原形成众多大陆岩石圈变形动力学端员模型的关键。近年发展起来的断层泥自生伊利石K-Ar定年技术为精确限定褶皱-冲断带变形时限提供了有效手段。鲜水河—安宁河—小江断裂系作为伴随印度-欧亚板块碰撞造山和高原物质侧向挤出过程形成的大型左旋走滑断裂系,其变形过程可为解译印度-欧亚板块碰撞远程应力向东传递方式提供关键证据。本文选取安宁河断裂冕宁—西昌段作为研究对象,在详细构造解析以明确其构造运动学特征的基础上,开展了断层泥自生伊利石K-Ar定年研究,以期精确限定安宁河断裂脆性变形的时间。构造解析表明安宁河断裂在近EW向挤压作用下经历了冲断变形,断层带发育碎斑岩和断层泥,指示为脆性变形。安宁河断裂不同粒级断层泥样品的黏土矿物学和伊利石K-Ar定年分析揭示,随着样品粒级减小,高温2M1型伊利石含量相对低温1M/1Md型伊利石含量逐渐减少,其K-Ar年龄总体呈变年轻趋势,表明不同粒级伊利石K-Ar年龄是由碎屑2M1型和自生1M/1Md型两个多型端员组成的混合年龄。伊利石年龄分析获得自生1M/1Md型伊利石的年龄为(42.6±9.4)Ma,表明安宁河断裂经历了始新世中期的冲断变形。结合前人构造变形、沉积学、低温热年代学和古地磁等研究,我们认为始新世中期青藏高原腹地及其周缘褶皱-冲断带发生准同期的构造挤压变形,其动力学机制可能与印度-欧亚板块硬碰撞以及青藏高原地块的陆内俯冲所导致的先存构造带活化有关。始新世中期安宁河断裂发生冲断变形直接证明印度-欧亚板块碰撞初期的远程应力已传递至青藏高原东南缘地区。

The faults in switched reluctance motors(SRMs) were detected and diagnosed in real time with the Kohonen neural network. When a fault happens, both financial losses and undesired situations may occur. For these reasons, it is important to detect the incipient faults of SRMs and to diagnose which faults have occurred. In this study, a test rig was realized to determine the healthy and faulty conditions of SRMs. A data set for the Kohonen neural network was created with implemented measurements. A graphical user interface(GUI) was created in Matlab to test the performance of the Kohonen artificial neural network in real time. The data of the SRM was transferred to this software with a data acquisition card. The condition of the motor was monitored by marking the data measured in real time on the weight position graph of the Kohonen neural network. This test rig is capable of real-time monitoring of the condition of SRMs, which are used with intermittent or continuous operation, and is capable of detecting and diagnosing the faults that may occur in the motor. The Kohonen neural network used for detection and diagnosis of faults of the SRM in real time with Matlab GUI was embedded in an STM32 processor. A prototype with the STM32 processor was developed to detect and diagnose the faults of SRMs independent of computers.

Horizontal transmission of hepatitis B virus in children with chronic hepatitis B

AIM: To determine the possible routes of intrafamilial transmission pattern in pediatrie cases of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. METHODS: In this descriptive retrospective study, 302 children with chronic HBV infection from 251 families and their parents attending the Social Security Children's Hospital and Doctor Sami Ulus Children's Hopsital in Ankara between December 1998 and May 2000, were enrolled in. Screenings and diagnosis of chronic HBV infections were established according to the Consensus 2000. RESULTS: In the studied 302 children with chronic HBV infection, mothers of 38% and fathers of 23% were HBsAg positive. The HBsAg positivity in at least two siblings of the same family was 61% when both parents were HBsAg positive. CONCLUSION: It is well known that hon'zontal transmission is quite common in countries where Hepatitis B Virus is moderately endemic. To our best knowledge, this is the largest series observed regarding the horizontal transmission in pediatrie chronic HBV infection in Turkey. It is necessary to expand the preventive programs to target not only the newborn period but also all stages of childhood.

Radiogenic isotope dating of illitic clays has been widely used to reconstruct thermal and fluid flow events in siliciclastic sedimentary basins,the information of which is critical to investigate mechanisms of hydrocarbon *** study carried out Rb-Sr and^(40)Ar-^(39)Ar dating of authigenic illitic clay samples separated from the Palaeogene sandstone in the northern South China *** Rb-Sr data further confirm the previously reported three periods of fluid flow events(at 34.5±0.9,31.2±0.6,and 23.6±0.8 Ma,respectively)in the northern South China Sea,which are related to regional episodic ***,^(40)Ar-^(39)Ar ages of illite obtained in this study are significantly younger than the corresponding Rb-Sr *** significantly younger^(40)Ar-^(39)Ar ages were probably due to ^(40)Ar loss caused by later dry heating events on the Hainan Island that have not affected the Rb-Sr isotopic *** inconsistency between Rb-Sr and^(40)Ar-^(39)Ar data should be attributed to different isotopic behaviors of K-Ar and Rb-Sr isotopic systematics in *** results indicate that Rb-Sr isotopic dating method may be a preferential approach for clay dating in geological settings where exist younger dry heating events.

AIM: To determine the gastroesophageal refl uxate in the cervical esophagus (CE) and measure transcutaneous cervical esophageal ultrasound (TCEUS) f indings [anterior wall thickness (WT) of CE, esophageal luminal diameter (ELD), esophageal diameter (ED)]; to compare TCEUS findings in the patient subgroups divided according to 24-h esophageal pH monitoring and manometry; and to investigate possible cut-off values according to the TCEUS f indings as a predictor of gastroesophageal refl ux (Ger). METHODS: In 45/500 patients, refl uxate was visualized in TCEUS. 38/45 patients underwent esophagogastroduo denoscopy (EGD), 24-h pH monitoring and manometry. RESULTS: The 38 patients were grouped according to 24-h pH monitoring as follows: Group A: Ger-positive (n = 20) [Includes Group B: isolated proximal refl ux (PR) (n = 6), Group C: isolated distal reflux (DR) (n = 6), and Group D: both PR/DR (n = 8)]; Group E: no refl ux (n = 13); and Group F: hypersensitive esophagus (HSE) (n = 5). Groups B + D indicated total PR patients (n = 14), Groups E + F refl ux-negatives with HSE (n = 18), and Groups A + F refl ux-positives with HSE (n = 25). When the 38 patients were grouped according to manometry fi ndings, 24 had normal esophageal manometry; 7 had hypotensive and 2 had hypertensive lower esophageal sphincter (LES); and 5 had ineffective esophageal motility disorder (IEM). The ELD measurement was greater in group A + F than group E (P = 0.023, 5.0 ± 1.3 vs 3.9 ± 1.4 mm). In 27/38 patients, there was at least one pathologic acid refl ux and/or pathologic manometry fi nding. The cut-off value for ELD of 4.83 mm had 79% sensitivity and 61% specificity in predicting the PRbetween Groups B + D and E (AUC = 0.775, P = 0.015). CONCLUSION: Visualizing refluxate in TCEUS was useful as a pre-diagnostic tool for estimating Ger or manometric pathology in 71.1% of adults in our study, but it was not diagnostic for CE WT.

Comparison of aerobic conjunctival bacterial flora in pregnant, reproductive-aged and postmenopausal women

AIM: To evaluate the effect of hormonal status on aerobic conjunctival flora in women. METHODS: One hundred fifty-eight women [reproductive-aged (n=55), pregnant (n=51), and postmenopausal (n=52)] who admitted to outpatient clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Denizli State Hospital were enrolled. Age, body-mass index (BMI), obstetric history, cigarette smoking, drug usage, presence of systemic disease, and intraocular pressure (IOP) were recorded for each patient. The samples were taken from the lower fornix with two culture swabs and directly incubated in culture containing 5% sheep blood, eosin-methylene blue and chocolate agar. The other swab specimen was Gram stained. All growths and microscopic results were analyzed. RESULTS: The coagulase-negative Staphylococcus was the predominant organism isolated in the conjunctival samples in both three groups. The aerobic microorganism growth rate for all isolated aerobic organisms revealed no significant change in the three groups (P>0.05). The conjunctival culture positivity rates were similar in the three groups (49% in reproductive-aged, 57% in pregnant and 58% in postmenopausal women) (P>0.05). Age, IOP, BMI, gravidity, parity, cigarette smoking, drug usage, and presence of systemic diseases did not have an effect on culture positivity in three groups. CONCLUSION: Results of this study showed that conjunctival aerobic flora and bacterial colonization did not differ between reproductive-aged, pregnant and postmenopausal women.

A new model for chromitite formation in ophiolites: Fluid immiscibility

Although the involvement of hydrous fluids has been widely invoked in formation of podiform chromitites in ophiolites, there is lack of natural evidence to signify the role and mechanism of fluids. In this study, a new model for the genesis of podiform chromitite is proposed on basis of revisits of comprehensive petrological, mineralogical and geochemical results of the well-preserved K?z?lda? ophiolite and the well-characterized Luobusa chromite deposit. In this model, ascending magmas intruding oceanic lithospheric mantle would presumably form a series of small magma chambers continuously connected by conduits. Tiny chromite nuclei would collect fluids dispersed in such magmas to form nascent droplets. They tend to float upward in the magma chamber and would be easily transported upward by flowing magmas. Chromite-rich droplets would be enlarged via coalescence of dispersed droplets during mingling and circulation in the magma chamber and/or transport in magma conduits. Crystallization of the chromite-rich liquid droplets would proceed from the margin of the droplet inward, leaving liquid entrapped within grains as precursor of mineral inclusions. With preferential upward transportation, immiscible chromite-rich liquids would coalesce to a large pool in a magma chamber. Large volumes of chromite would crystallize in situ, forming podiform chromitite and resulting in fluid enrichment in the chamber. The fluids would penetrate and compositionally modify ambient dunite and harzburgite, leading to significant fractionations of elemental and isotopic compositions between melts and fluids from which dunite and chromitite respectively formed. Therefore, fluid immiscibility during basaltic magma ascent plays a vital role in chromitite formation.
