This study deals with the analysis of the glacial processes that have affected the relief of Mt Chelmos in northern Peloponnesus, Greece during middle and Late Pleistocene. The goal was to compile a combined geomorphological-geological map of the study area which would enable the chronological stratification of the glacial landforms cropping up on Mt. Chelmos. Chronological stratification was further aided by optically stimulated luminescence(OSL)dating. The map served as the basis upon which the reconstruction and discussion on the phases of the Middle-Late Quaternary paleoclimatic history of *** have been made. A sophisticated semiautomated method was first used to analyze the Digital Elevation Model(DEM), combined with Aster,Quickbird and ALOS imagery in order to identify glacial and periglacial, as well as karstic ***, these features along with other nonrecognizable features from the remote-sensing images were documented in the field. In this way, several glacial landforms were identified, such as moraines and cirques, indicating extended glaciation phases during the middle and Late Pleistocene. Additionally,a ground moraine located at an altitude of 1900-2050 m, within the Spanolakos glacial valley, was dated using the OSL-dating method. The resulting ages indicate a phase of glacier advance/stabilization during MIS-5 b(89-86 ka), which is in consistence with pollenrecord evidence from Greece and the *** above the floors of the highest cirques on Mount Tymphi(Hughes 2004). These glacial landforms postdate the youngest moraines on Mount Tymphi(Tymphian Stage MIS 5 d-2), and it has been argued that they might be Younger Dryas in age(Woodward and Hughes 2011) although this has not been confirmed by radiometric dating(Hughes et al. 2006 d).Recent field observations throughout the mountains of central Greece(Leontartitis and Pavlopoulos, unpublished data) demonstrate that the glaciation extent has been underestimated in several

Stent A pancreaticojejunostomy after pancreatoduodenectomy:Is it always necessary?

The establishment of a postoperative pancreatic fistula(POPF)is considered the most common and,concomitantly,the most serious complication associated with pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD).The search for either technical modifications of the operative technique or pharmaceutical interventions that could possibly aid in decreasing the incidence of this often-devastating complication appears *** stenting of the pancreatic duct,with the use of either internal or external stents,has been evaluated in this *** theory,it is an approach that could eliminate many pathophysiological factors responsible for the occurrence of a *** purpose of the present study was to review the current data regarding the role of pancreatic duct stenting on the incidence of POPF,after PD,by using PubMed and Reference Citation *** general,previous studies seem to highlight the superiority of external stents over their internal counterparts in regard to the incidence of POPF;this is at the cost,however,of increased morbidity associated mainly with the stent ***,the use of an internal stent is a less invasive approach with acceptable results and is definitely deprived of the drawbacks arising through the complete diversion of pancreatic juice from the gastrointestinal *** in mind the scarcity of high-quality data on the subject,an approach of reserving stent placement for the high-risk for POPF patients and individualizing the selection between the use of an internal or an external stent according to the distinct characteristics of each individual case scenario appears appropriate.

Perovskite solar cells(PSCs)have made great advances in terms of power conversion efficiency(PCE),yet their subpar stability continues to hinder their *** interface between the perovskite layer and the charge-carrier transporting layers plays a crucial role in undermining the stability of *** this work,we propose a strategy to stabilize high-performance PSCs with PCE over 23%by introducing a cesium-doped graphene oxide(GO-Cs)as an interlayer between the perovskite and hole-transporting *** GO-Cs treated PSCs exhibit excellent operational stability with a projected T80(the time where the device PCE reduces to 80%of its initial value)of 2143 h of operation at the maximum powering point under one sun illumination.

Assessing the externalities of a ski resort in Tzoumerka:willingness to pay in order to promote or to prevent its construction

The present study aims to assess the externalities of a ski resort,that is planned to be built at Tzoumerka mountains,in *** research relies on the Contingent Valuation method,which indirectly estimates the economic value of environmental and other nonmarket assets,based on the expressed preferences of members of a social *** investigation was based on primary *** core idea of questionnaire’s design,is subject to the use of a double WTP(willingness to pay)question,aiming at the monetary assessment of the attitude of the residents,regarding the upcoming infrastructure project,taking into account both its positive and its negative *** on the attitude of the survey respondents,they were asked to decide if they wish to offer an amount of money either to promote or to prevent the construction of the ski *** and non-parametric models were then applied in order to calculate in economic terms the expressed opinion of the *** primary question to be answered is whether the willingness to build the ski resort holds a higher economic value than the desire to prevent *** to the results of the survey,the vast majority of residents(92.4%)supported the idea of building the ski resort,projecting their apparent desire for the tourist and economic development of the *** reinforcement of the construction idea of the project was estimated on average at €378,*** very low proportion of the participants who disagreed with the project(5%),did not allow the economic assessment of its prevention,leaving room for further research into the application of Contingent Valuation method and its contribution in cost-benefit analysis and decision making,regarding upcoming projects.

Medical transportation and the contribution of air medical evacuation in isolated mountainous areas of Greece-Case study,Municipality of Agrafa

In every emergency medical situation,access to emergency medical services is an inalienable right of any *** average acceptable time to provide first aid assistance is 60 *** this paper,the possibility of using helicopters for air travel in mountainous areas was examined for the first time for all of Greece and especially for a mountainous and isolated area such as the Municipality of ***,the time distance-virtual distance,from the hospitals was calculated at the national level of Greece,with an acceptable first contact time of 60 minutes(golden hour),i.e.,less than two hours from the nearest hospital to the incident and back to the hospital and the relevant conclusions are ***,the case study of Municipality of Agrafa,one of the most mountainous areas in Greece,was *** time distance of the settlements from the nearest primary health point,namely the Primary Health Centre(PHC)of West Fragkista,was calculated and the transportation by ground means was compared with the corresponding time by flying means,to investigate the contribution of air transportation or not,of the timely arrival of the patients in the appropriate health ***,possible helicopter landing locations were identified,using a geographic information system to facilitate the process of air medical transportation in the Municipality of Agrafa.

Characteristic time scale as optimal input in Machine Learning algorithms:Homogeneous autoignition

Considering temporally evolving processes,the search for optimal input selection in Machine Learning(ML)algorithms is extended here beyond(i)the readily available independent variables defining the process and(ii)the dependent variables suggested by feature extraction methods,by considering the time scale that characterizes the *** analysis is based on the process of homogeneous autoignition,which is fully determined by the initial temperature T(0)and pressure p(0)of the mixture and the equivalence ratio𝜙that specifies the initial mixture *** aim is to seek the optimal input for the prediction of the time at which the mixture *** Multilayer Perceptron(MLP)and Principal Component Analysis(PCA)algorithms are employed for prediction and feature extraction,*** is demonstrated that the time scale that characterizes the initiation of the process𝜐𝑓(0),provides much better accuracy as input to MLP than any pair of the three independent parameters T(0),p(0)and𝜙or their two principal ***,it is shown that using𝜐𝑓(0)as input results in a coefficient of determination R 2 in the range of 0.953 to 0.982,while the maximum value of R 2 when using the independent parameters or principal components is *** physical grounds,on which the success of𝜐𝑓(0)is based,are *** results suggest the need for further research in order to develop selection methodologies of optimal inputs among those that characterize the process.

Assessing the Economic Value of Vernacular Architecture of Mountain Regions Using Contingent Valuation

Human pressure on mountain resources poses certain threats to their natural and man-made environment. Although there are many parameters involved, one of the driving forces behind this situation is the emphasis given so far only to the market value of mountain goods and services, ignoring the true social and environmental costs of using mountain resources. Towards this direction, the use of non-market valuation techniques could prove to be beneficial. Bearing in mind the above remarks, the paper presents an application of the Contingent Valuation Method, which aims at estimating the monetary value of a mountain settlement’s vernacular architecture, namely Metsovo. For this purpose, the survey focuses on Metsovo visitors’ willingness to pay a single annual voluntary contribution to an institution that would be founded in order to undertake all necessary actions required to preserve the town’s traditional character. The results are very promising and indicate that vernacular architecture holds a significant economic value that could justify the implementation of appropriate policies towards the protection of vernacular settlements in mountain areas.

Energy poverty in the mountainous town of Metsovo,Greece

In an attempt to enhance knowledge on the energy poverty phenomenon in mountainous areas,a primary social survey was conducted in a typical mountainous town of Greece,Metsovo in the Region of *** survey recorded quantitative data of energy expenses and incomes of households and it also captured qualitative indicators related to energy *** findings showed that nine out of ten households in Metsovo are exposed to energy poverty,based on the objective 10%*** subjective indicators revealed other interesting aspects of the *** one-third of the local population live in houses that are inadequately heated and/or present damp *** two-thirds of the local population have been forced to restrict other basic needs,in order to respond to high energy *** the relationships between variables of the survey also revealed some notable *** inadequately heated present statistical significant correlation with the heating system *** inadequately heated houses are also correlated with houses that presented damp-mould problems,as well as households that report arrears in energy ***,reduction in hours of heating system operation is correlated with health *** energy policy in Greece does not include specific strategies for mountainous areas,apart from some differentiations in heating oil *** great extent of energy poverty in mountainous Greece,highlighted by the present representative(with respect to mountainous Greece)study,may have irreversible social ***,a need for specific and effective action is necessary,whose main axes should be an extensive upgrade of buildings’energy efficiency in mountainous settlements and special fuel tariffs for mountainous areas.
