Platelet rich plasma effectiveness in bowel anastomoses:A systematic review

BACKGROUND Anastomotic leak constitutes a major problem in abdominal *** insufficiency,topical or systemic factors contribute to disrupted healing of the performed bowel anastomosis and result in anastomosis leakage,with detrimental effects on patient postoperative *** the investigation of several factors and the invention of protective materials,the ideal agent to prevent anastomotic leaks is yet to be *** To study the effect of platelet rich plasma(PRP)on the healing of bowel *** A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed,EMBASE,and Scopus databases to identify studies investigating the effect of PRP application on bowel *** Eighteen studies were eligible with a total population of 712 animals including rats(14 studies),rabbits(2 studies)and pigs(2 studies).No postoperative complications were reported following PRP *** out of 18 studies reported a statistically significant higher anastomosis bursting pressure in PRP groups compared to control either in healthy animals or animal models with underlying condition or intervention,such as intraperitoneal chemotherapy or *** results were reported by ten studies in terms of tissue hydroxyproline *** study reported significant increase in collagen deposition in PRP *** application resulted in significantly decreased inflammatory cell infiltration in the presence of peritonitis or intraperitoneal chemotherapy(6 studies).CONCLUSION The application of PRP is associated with improved bowel anastomosis outcomes,especially in animal models having an underlying condition affecting the normal healing *** application seems to augment the normal healing process under these ***,further studies are needed to investigate the potential role of PRP on bowel anastomosis healing,especially in clinical settings.

BACKGROUND Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors(SGLT2i)significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular(CV)and renal adverse events in patients with diabetes mellitus,heart failure(HF)and/or chronic kidney *** performed a meta-analysis to explore the impact of several different SGLT2i on all-cause mortality,CV mortality,HF hospitalizations and the combined outcome CV death/HF hospitalization in HF patients across the spectrum of left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF)*** A systematic search in MEDLINE database and Cochrane library through March 2021 was performed without *** clinical trials that provided data about the impact of SGLT2i on all-cause mortality,CV mortality,HF hospitalizations or the combined outcome of CV death/HF hospitalization in HF patients were included.A random effects model was used for calculating the effect *** Nine studies(n=16,723 patients,mean age:65.9 years,males:70.7%)were included in the quantitative *** to placebo,SGLT2i use was associated with 14%lower risk of all-cause mortality[hazard ratio(HR)=0.86,95%CI:0.78−0.94,I^(2)=0,P=0.0008],32%lower risk of HF hospitalizations(HR=0.68,95%CI:0.62−0.74,I^(2)=0,P<0.001),14%lower risk of CV mortality(HR=0.86,95%CI:0.77−0.95,I^(2)=0,P=0.003)and 26%lower risk of CV death/HF hospitalization(HR=0.74,95%CI:0.68−0.80,I^(2)=0,P<0.001).Regarding the safety outcomes,our data revealed no significant differences between SGLT2i and placebo groups in drug related discontinuations,amputations,severe hypoglycemia,hypotension,volume depletion,ketoacidosis and genital *** contrast,a protective role of SGLT2i against placebo was found for serious adverse events and acute kidney *** In patients with HF,regardless of LVEF phenotype,all SGLT2i had an excellent safety profile and significantly reduced the risk of all-cause mortality,CV mortality,HF hospitalizations and CV deaths/HF hospitalizations compared to placeb

Diabetes remission after bariatric surgery

Over the last decade,obesity rates have continued to rise in the United States as well as worldwide and are showing no signs of slowing *** rise is in parallel with the increasing rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Given the association between obesity and T2DM and their strong correlation with increased morbidity and mortality in addition to healthcare expenditure,it is important to recognize the most effective ways to combat ***,we performed a review of literature that focused on assessing the outcomes of T2DM following bariatric *** evidence suggests that bariatric surgery provides better T2DM resolution in obese patients when compared to best medical management ***,Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch as well as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass have demonstrated higher rates of T2DM resolution when compared with other bariatric procedures.

Incidence and risk factors for the development of anemia following gastric bypass surgery

AIM:To evaluate the incidence and risk factors for the development of anemia after RouxenY gastric bypass (RYGB).METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients undergoing RYGB from January 2003 to November 2007 was performed. All patients had a preoperative body mass index > 40 kg/m2. A total of 206 patients were evaluated. All patients were given daily supplements of ferrous sulfate tablets for 2 wk following their operation. Hematological and metabolic indices were routinely evaluated following surgery. Patients were followed for a minimum of 86 ***: There were 41 males and 165 females with an average age of 40.8 years. 21 patients (10.2%) developed postoperative anemia and 185 patients (89.8%) did not. Anemia was due to iron deficiency in all cases. The groups had similar demographics, surgical procedure and comorbidities. Menstruation (P = 0.02) and peptic ulcer disease (P = 0.01) were risk factors for the development of postoperative ***: Iron deficiency anemia is frequent. RYGB surgery compounds occult blood loss. Increased ferrous sulfate supplementation may prevent iron depletion in populations at increased risk.

The effect of electric vehicle energy storage on the transition to renewable energy

The most viable path to alleviate the Global Climate Change is the substitution of fossil fuel power plants for electricity generation with renewable energy *** substitution requires the development of very large energy storage capacity,with the inherent thermodynamic irreversibility of the storage-recovery ***,the world experiences a significant growth in the numbers of electric vehicles with large batteries.A fleet of electric vehicles is equivalent to an efficient storage capacity system to supplement the energy storage system of the electricity *** based on the hourly demand-supply data of ERCOT,a very large electricity grid,show that a fleet of electric vehicles cannot provide all the needed capacity and the remaining capacity must be met by *** though the storage capacity of the batteries is close to 1–2%of the needed storage capacity of the grid,the superior round-trip storage efficiency of batteries reduces the energy dissipation associated with the storage and recovery processes by up to 38%and the total hydrogen storage capacity by up to 50%.The study also shows that anticipated improvements in the round-trip efficiencies of batteries are almost three times more effective than improvements in hydrogen storage systems.

Status of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Greece and its Approach on COVID-19 Pandemic

Although acupuncture was first introduced to Greece in about 1938,it was not until 1973 that an institution was created to teach it,where its study was limited to medical doctors(MDs).Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)was not taught to non-MDs until *** today,TCM has not been integrated into the Greek health system,and in a few exceptions,TCM was mainly associated with pain management.A few private schools teach TCM theory and practice in the fields of acupuncture,moxibustion,herbology,gua sha,and tui na(Chinese massage).This study examines the use of Chinese single herbs and formulas for prevention or treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic in Greece,as well as issues with the availability of Chinese herbs and proposals for substitutes from the traditional Greek medicine point of view.

Inflammatory pseudo-tumour(IPT) of the liver is a rare condition with the appearance of a tumour-like space occupying lesion. Aetiology and natural history is not known for these benign lesions, as they are commonly diagnosed as malignant lesions and frequently undergo surgical resection since spontaneous resolution is very rare. Multifocal IPT involving both lobes of liver are rarely reported. Here we report a unique case of multifocal IPT of the liver which resolved spontaneously within 5 wk period.

Autophagy is the liver cell energy recycling system regulating a variety of homeostatic *** organelles,lipids and proteins are degraded in the lysosomes and their elements are re-used by the *** on autophagy have led to the award of two Nobel Prizes and a health of important *** this review we describe the fundamental functions of autophagy in the liver including new data on the regulation of *** we emphasize the fact that autophagy acts like a two edge sword in many occasions with the most prominent paradigm being its involvement in the initiation and progress of hepatocellular *** also focused to the implication of autophagy and its specialized forms of lipophagy and mitophagy in the pathogenesis of various liver *** analyzed autophagy not only in well studied diseases,like alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver and liver fibrosis but also in viral hepatitis,biliary diseases,autoimmune hepatitis and rare diseases including inherited metabolic diseases and also acetaminophene *** also stressed the different consequences that activation or impairment of autophagy may have in hepatocytes as opposed to Kupffer cells,sinusoidal endothelial cells or hepatic stellate ***,we analyzed the limited clinical data compared to the extensive experimental evidence and the possible future therapeutic interventions based on autophagy manipulation.

Transforming urinary stone disease management by artificial intelligence-based methods:A comprehensive review
