Ethylene is a. endogenous pla.t hormone tha. increa.es under a.verse environmenta. conditions, resulting in lea. a.d fruit a.scission a.d ultima.ely yield reduction. In cotton, however, the effects of wa.er-deficit stress on ethylene production ha.e been uncerta.n. In this study it wa. hypothesized tha. a.plica.ion of a. ethylene inhibitor 1-Methylcyclo- propene (1-MCP) would prevent ethylene production a.d result in a.levia.ion of wa.er-deficit stress consequences on the physiology a.d meta.olism of the cotton flower a.d subtending lea.. To test this hypothesis, growth cha.ber experiments were conducted in 2009-2010 with trea.ments consisting of (C) untrea.ed well-wa.ered control, (C + 1MCP) well-wa.ered plus 1-MCP, (WS) untrea.ed wa.er-stressed control, a.d (WS + 1MCP) wa.er-stressed plus 1-MCP. The pla.ts were subjected to two consecutive drying cycles during flowering, a.proxima.ely 8 weeks a.ter pla.ting, a.d 1-MCP wa. folia. a.plied a. a.ra.e of 10g. a./ha.a. the beginning of ea.h drying cycle. The results showed tha. 1-MCP a.plica.ion ha. no significa.t effect on ga. excha.ge functions a.d did not prevent reductions from wa.er stress in lea. photosynthesis, respira.ion a.d stoma.a. conducta.ce. However, a.plica.ion of 1-MCP resulted in a.decrea.e in sucrose content of wa.er-stressed pistils compa.ed to the control indica.ing tha. 1-MCP ha. the potentia. to interfere in ca.bohydra.e meta.olism of reproductive units.

Polya.ines, putrescine (PUT), spermidine (SPD) a.d spermine (SPM) a.e implica.ed in pla.ts’ responses under conditions of a.iotic stress. Previous resea.ch in other crops ha. indica.ed tha. polya.ines a.d cha.ges in their concentra.ions a.e a.socia.ed with drought tolera.ce under conditions of wa.er-deficit stress;however, no informa.ion exists on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Growth cha.ber experiments were conducted with two cotton cultiva.s differing in drought tolera.ce, ST5288B2F (drought-sensitive) a.d Siokra.L23 (drought-tolera.t) in order to investiga.e the distribution of free polya.ines, the effect of wa.er-deficit stress on the polya.ine meta.olism of cotton reproductive units a.d their subtending lea.es a. well a. the possible rela.ionship between polya.ines a.d drought tolera.ce in cotton. Our results showed tha. cotton ova.ies conta.ned significa.tly higher levels of tota. free polya.ines compa.ed to their subtending lea.es under both control a.d wa.er stress conditions. Wa.er-deficit stress significa.tly increa.ed PUT concentra.ions in ST5288B2F, while SPM levels significa.tly decrea.ed in Siokra.L23. The results indica.ed tha. wa.er-deficit stress significa.tly a.fected cotton polya.ine meta.olism in reproductive structures a.d their subtending lea.es;however, no clea. rela.ionship between drought-tolera.ce a.d cha.ges in polya.ine a.cumula.ion wa. esta.lished. Further resea.ch is needed to elucida.e the mecha.ism a.cording to which wa.er-deficit stress a.fects polya.ine meta.olism.

The core of the na.ura. product chemistry la.ora.ory is isola.ion seconda.y meta.olita.>es. One of the potential secondary metabolites for isolation in the natural product chemistry laboratory is routine (quercetin-3-O-glycosides). Routine (Quercetin-3-O-glycoside) has been isolated from ethanol extract of rubber cassava leaves (Manihot glaziovii a. style="font-fa.ily:Verda.a.">Ma.. Isola.ion wa. done by ma.era.ion a.d recrysta.liza.ion. The isola.ion method used in this study is complemented by the isola.ion method published. The isola.ed (Quercetin-3-O-glycoside) routine using this method obta.ned a.yield of 0.118% of the tota. dried lea. extra.t. The routine (Quercetin-3-O-glycoside) wa. identified using a.sta.da.d routine. Routine ca. be further utilized in the world of medicine a. a. a.plifier of ca.illa.y structure, reducing the permea.ility a.d fra.ility of blood vessels.

Trea.ments consisted of control (well wa.ered) a.d wa.er-stress (irriga.ion withheld for two weeks a. the onset of flowering) in a.split plot design. First da. white flowers a.d their subtending lea.es were collected a. the end of ea.h week of the stress period for determina.ion of polya.ine concentra.ions. Wa.er-deficit stress resulted in significa.t increa.es in PUT a.d SPD levels of pistils a.d lea.es compa.ed to the control. However, pistil a.d lea. SPM content significa.tly increa.ed under drought conditions in one loca.ion a.d rema.ned una.tered in the other one. Lea. a.d pistil polya.ine meta.olism of cotton a.pea.ed to be grea.ly a.fected by limited wa.er supply, however further resea.ch is needed to elucida.e the wa.s polya.ines ca. be used to increa.e cotton drought tolera.ce.
