The Portuguese island of Selvagem Grande(Great Salvage)in Macaronesia is an important seabird breeding station in the eastern *** populations of Cory’s shearwater Calonectris diomedea(Scopoli,1769),Bulwer’s petrel Bulweria bulweria(Jardine&Selby,1828)and little shearwater Puffinus assimilis baroli(Bonaparte,1857)are present,and white-faced storm-petrel Pelagodroma marina(Latham,1790)and Madeiran storm-petrel Oceanodroma castro(Harcourt,1851)populations are of global *** Grande also provides diverse habitats for an extensive flora,including 11 endemic *** 270-ha island was also inhabited by two alien invasive mammals:the European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus(Linnaeus,1758)and the house mouse Mus musculus(Linnaeus,1758).Both are known to have had adverse impacts on breeding seabirds and island *** 2002,the Natural Park of Madeira conducted a program using brodifacoum bait formulations aimed at rabbit and mouse *** 17000 individual baiting points were established on a 12.5×12.5 m *** were also applied by hand“seeding”on steep slopes and cliffs where bait stations could not be *** were removed after a ***,mice persisted for considerably longer and strategic bait applications against them continued for a further six *** assessments by trapping,bait takes and systematic observa-tion of signs over three years,has confirmed the removal of both alien invasive *** paper presents information on these operations,on measures adopted to mitigate adverse impacts of the eradication program on important vertebrate non-target species,including Berthelot’s pipit Anthus berthelotii Bolle,1862 and a species of gecko Tarentola bischoffi Joger,1984 and on the initial response of the island’s ecosystem to the eradication of rabbits and mice.

Aims Mechanisms of plant drought resistance include both tolerance and *** vulnerability to embolism and turgor loss point are considered traits that confer tolerance,while leaf abscission and deciduousness characterizes the avoidance *** these mechanisms are thought to trade-off expressing a continuum among species,little is known on how variation in the timing and duration of leaf shedding in response to drought affect the relationship between xylem and leaf *** the present study,we explored the extent to which drought tolerance differs between two oak(Quercus)species that exhibit different leaf shedding ***,we predicted that *** Trel.,which loses leaves at the end of the dry season(late-deciduous)and is thus exposed to a greater risk of cavitation,would be more drought tolerant and more conservative in its water use than *** Liebm.,which loses its leaves for only a short period of time in the middle of the dry season(brevideciduous).Methods The study was conducted in central Mexico in a single population of each of the two oak species,separated from each other by a distance of 1.58 km,and by an altitudinal difference of 191 *** deserticola(late deciduous)is more frequent down slope,while ***(brevideciduous)tends to occur at higher elevations along the *** assessed seasonal differences(rainy versus dry season)in native stem hydraulic conductivity,and tested for variation in xylem vulnerability to cavitation,leaf water use and leaf turgor loss point between the two *** Findings The two oak species did not differ in traits conferring drought tolerance,including xylem vulnerability to embolism,leaf turgor loss point,or stomatal ***,both species had different performance during the dry season;the brevideciduous species had lower negative impact in the xylem function than the late-deciduous ***,seasonal changes in plant physiological performance

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection and diabetes mellitus are two major public health problems that cause devastating health and financial burdens worldwide. Diabetes can be classified into two major types: type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1DM) and T2 DM. T2 DM is a common endocrine disorder that encompasses multifactorial mechanisms, and T1 DM is an immunologically mediated disease. Many epidemiological studies have shown an association between T2 DM and chronic hepatitis C(CHC) infection. The processes through which CHC is associated with T2 DM seem to involve direct viral effects, insulin resistance, proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other immunemediated mechanisms. Few data have been reported on the association of CHC and T1 DM and reports on the potential association between T1 DM and acute HCV infection are even rarer. A small number of studies indicate that interferon-α therapy can stimulate pancreatic autoim-munity and in certain cases lead to the development of T1 DM. Diabetes and CHC have important interactions. Diabetic CHC patients have an increased risk of developing cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma compared with nondiabetic CHC subjects. However, clinical trials on HCV-positive patients have reported improvements in glucose metabolism after antiviral treatment. Further studies are needed to improve prevention policies and to foster adequate and cost-effec-tive programmes for the surveillance and treatment of diabetic CHC patients.

Hepatitis C virus syndrome: A constellation of organ-and non-organ specific autoimmune disorders, B-cell nonHodgkin's lymphoma, and cancer

The clinical course of chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection is characterized by possible development of both liver and extrahepatic disorders. The tropism of HCV for the lymphoid tissue is responsible for several immune-mediated disorders; a poly-oligoclonal B-lymphocyte expansion, commonly observed in a high proportion of patients with HCV infection, are responsible for the production of different autoantibodies and immune-complexes, such as mixed cryoglobulins. These serological alterations may characterize a variety of autoimmune or neoplastic diseases. Cryoglobulinemic vasculitis due to small-vessel deposition of circulating mixed cryoglobulins is the prototype of HCV-driven immune-mediated and lymphoproliferative disorders; interestingly, in some cases the disease may evolve to frank malignant lymphoma. In addition, HCV shows an oncogenic potential as suggested by several clinicoepidemiological and laboratory studies; in addition to hepatocellular carcinoma that represents the most frequent HCV-related malignancy, a causative role of HCV has been largely demonstrated in a significant percentage of patients with isolated B-cells nonHodgkin's lymphomas. The same virus may be also involved in the pathogenesis of papillary thyroid cancer, a rare neoplastic condition that may complicate HCVrelated thyroid involvement. Patients with HCV infection are frequently asymptomatic or may develop only hepatic alteration, while a limited but clinically relevant number can develop one or more autoimmune and/or neoplastic disorders. Given the large variability of their prevalence among patients' populations from different countries, it is possible to hypothesize a potential role of other co-factors, i.e., genetic and/or environmental, in the pathogenesis of HCV-related extra-hepatic diseases.
