Background. Recurrent ovarian cancer (OVCA) has become the model f.r ca ncer as a chronic disease, yet little is known about what motivates patients and physic ians in treatment choices. Methods. We investigated the attitudes of.patients wi th epithelial OVCA and staf. towards palliative chemotherapy f.r recurrent OVCA with a cross-sectional questionnaire study. Results. Instruments were developed and piloted in 15 patients. This exploratory study ref.ects substantial bias in the sample populations. One hundred twenty-two patients and 37 staf. were enro lled in the US and 39 patients and 25 staf. were enrolled in the UK. UK patients had a lower educational status (P = 0.001), lower stage disease (P = 0.025), an d less prior lines of.chemotherapy (P f.patients had recurrent OV CA and 67%of.staf. were physicians. Seventy-three percent of.patients recalled a discussion about prognosis and 74%wanted to know details of.the prognosis f. r a typical patient (US = UK). Most patients (48%) thought that their physician was realistic, and 57%of.staf. f.lt that they were optimistic. The vastmajorit y of.both staf. and patients thought that patients positively reinterpreted what they were told. f.ve percent of.staf. thought that palliative care was incomp atiblewhen considering chemotherapy as an option f.r their second recurrence o f.OVCA, compared with 36%of.US patients, signif.cantly more than the 12%of.UK patients (P = 0.007). Patients thought that standard chemotherapy f.r a second r ecurrence of.OVCA produced remission in 50%and cure in 15%of.patients. Staf. r eported 20%and 0%, respectively. f.f.y percent of.patients and 57%of.staf. wo uldwant chemotherapy as an asymptomatic patient with a normal CT and a rising CA -125. Energy Meteorology f.r the Evaluation of.Solar f.rm Thermal Impacts on Desert Habitats

This work addresses challenges and opportunities in the evaluation of.solar power plant impacts, with a particular f.cus on thermal ef.ects of.solar plants on the environment and vice-versa. Large-scale solar power plants are of.en sited in arid or desert habitats, which tend to include f.una and f.ora that are highly sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. Our understanding of.both shortwave (solar) and longwave (terrestrial) radiation processes in solar power plants is complete enough to render the modeling of.radiation f.uxes with high conf.dence f.r most applications. In contrast to radiation, the convective environment in large-scale solar power plants is much more dif.icult to characterize. Wind direction, wind speed, turbulence intensity, dust concentration, ground condition, panel conf.guration density, orientation and distribution throughout the solar f.eld, all af.ect the local environment, the balance between radiation and convection, and in turn, the perf.rmance and thermal impact of.solar power plants. Because the temperatures of.the two sides of.photovoltaic (PV) panels depend on detailed convection-radiation balances, the uncertainty associated with convection af.ects the heat and mass transf.r balances as well. Those balances are critically important in estimating the thermal impact of.large-scale solar f.rms on local habitats. Here we discuss outstanding issues related with these transf.r processes f.r utility-scale solar generation and highlight potential pathways to gain usef.l knowledge about the convective environment directly f.om solar f.rms under operating conditions. f.r atoms in external electric f.elds, the hyperpolarizabilities are the coef.icients describing the nonlinear interactions contributing to the induced energies at the f.urth power of.the applied electric f.elds. Accurate evaluations of.these coef.icients f.r various systems are crucial f.r improving precision in advanced atom-based optical lattice clocks and f.r estimating f.eld-induced ef.ects in atoms f.r quantum inf.rmation applications. However, there is a notable scarcity of.research on atomic hyperpolarizabilities, especially in the relativistic realm. Our work addresses this gap by establishing a novel set of.alternative f.rmulas f.r the hyperpolarizability based on the f.urth-order perturbation theory. These f.rmulas of.er a more reasonable regrouping of.scalar and tensor components compared to previous f.rmulas, thereby enhancing their correctness and applicability. To validate our f.rmulas, we perf.rm the calculations f.r the ground and low-lying excited pure states of.f.w-electron atoms H, Li, and Be+. The highly accurate results obtained f.r the H atom could serve as benchmarks f.r f.rther development of.other theoretical methods.

Magnitude, spatial patterns and drivers of.methane f.uxes f.om coastal salt marshes and mangrove f.rests in China

Methane（CH4） is a highly potent greenhouse gas due to its high radiative f.rcing and global warming *** the magnitude, spatial patterns, and drivers of.CH4emission f.om wetlands at the regional scale is crucial f.r f.rmulating suitable strategies to mitigate f.ture climate change. In this study, we synthesized the CH4f.ux data reported f.r major plant communities in the coastal salt marshes and mangrove f.rests in China and produced a spatial map of.CH4f.uxes f.om the mangrove sediments and salt marshes in China based on the results of.machine learning models. Moreover, we examined the main drivers of.CH4f.ux f.om these coastal wetlands and estimated the annual CH4emissions f.om the salt marshes and mangrove f.rests in dif.erent coastal provinces of.China using a bottom-up approach. Our results showed that the mean CH4f.uxes f.om the salt marsh and mangrove ecosystems in China were 2.22±0.29 and 2.26±0.55 mg m-2h-1, respectively. Across China, the total annual CH4emission f.om salt marshes was 31,179.75 Mg CH4a-1, while that f.om mangroves was 5,533.97 Mg CH4a-1with the sediments contributing to 12.7%(701.64 Mg CH4a-1) of.the total ef.lux. The salt marshes and mangroves in China accounted f.r 2.75% and 0.14%–0.15% of.the global annual CH4emissions f.om these two ecosystems,respectively. Moreover, we f.und that CH4emissions f.om the salt marshes and mangroves could of.set the cooling impact arising f.om net carbon dioxide uptake by 88% and 53%, respectively, over a 100-year time scale. Mean annual temperature, soil moisture, and soil organic carbon content were the main f.ctors controlling CH4emissions f.om these coastal ***, we f.und that CH4f.uxes f.om the salt marshes in China decreased with latitude, which implied a possible increase in marsh CH4emission in response to global warming that should be considered caref.lly when developing nature-based climate solutions to achieve national goals f.r carbon neutrality.

Current impact in the treatment of.advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: The challenge remains

Hepatocellular carcinoma remains a signif.cant cause of.mortality worldwide, particularly among patients with liver cirrhosis. In most cases, surveillance in cirrhotic patients is neglected, leading to a diagnosis when the neoplasm is at an advanced stage. Within this context, Zhou et al carried out a network meta-analysis to demonstrate the ef.ectiveness of.hepatic arterial inf.sion chemotherapy, concluding that it is a superior approach compared to soraf.nib and transarterial chemoembolization in the treatment of.advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. Unf.rtunately, the meta-analysis in question lacks methodological rigor, preventing the authors f.om making more def.nitive assertions. Additionally, we understand that transarterial chemoembolization, when properly indicated, is a highly ef.ective therapeutic option, and that soraf.nib, given the results of.new therapies based on immune checkpoint inhibitors, is no longer the recommended drug f.r the treatment of.these patients. Theref.re, we believe the use of.hepatic arterial inf.sion chemotherapy is increasingly limited and lacks strong scientif.c support. © The Author(s) 2025. Anomalous open orbits in Hof.tadter spectrum of.Chern insulator

The nontrivial band topology of.Chern insulator can enrich the content of.its Hof.tadter butterf.y spectra, which is closely related to recent experiments in twisted bilayer graphene and cold atom systems. We investigate the Hof.tadter spectrum f.r various models of.Chern insulators under a rational f.ux φ0/q, here φ0=h/e and q being an integer. We f.nd the number of.splitting subbands is |q-C| with C denoting the Chern number of.parent band. Importantly, anomalous open-orbital subbands with Chern numbers q-1 and-q-1 emerge unexpectedly, which are beyond the parameter window（-q/2, q/2） of.the Diophantine equation studied by Thouless-Kohmoto-Nightingale-den Nijs [Phys. Rev. Lett. 49, 405（1982）]. The emergence of.anomalous open orbits can be traced by analyzing the evolution of.the Hof.tadter spectrum, identif.ing as a new type of.topological phase transition. These novel f.ndings not only pinpoint the peculiar Hof.tadter spectrum of.Chern insulator, but also provide routes to study exotic characteristics beyond the Landau level physics.

f.rmation and Microstructural Characterization of.Silicon-modif.ed Aluminide Coating on Nickel-based Superalloy IN738LC

In this investigation, aluminide coatings used to protect industrial components at high temperature and corrosive environments were modif.ed with silicon addition and the microstructural f.atures and f.rmation mechanism were evaluated. The coating on the nickel-based superalloy IN738LC was carried out by a two stage process including siliconizing at f.rst and aluminizing thereaf.er. Pack cementation siliconizing perf.rmed at 950C f.r 2, 4 and 6 hours in several powder mixtures of.Si, A12O3 and NHiCl, then aluminum was dif.used into the surf.ce of.the specimens by an industrial aluminizing process. The modif.ed coatings were characterized by means of.standard metallography, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray dif.raction methods. The results show that Si in the coatings mainly presents in the f.rm of.secondary phases including Cr3Si, Mo5Si3 and Nii6Ti6Si7, well distributed within the NiAl matrix. The advantages of.this two stage modif.ed coating is discussed.

Closed-f.rm solutions f.r f.ee vibration of.rectangular f.M thin plates resting on elastic f.undation

This article presents closed-f.rm solutions f.r the f.equency analysis of.rectangular f.nctionally graded material (f.M) thin plates subjected to initially in-plane loads and with an elastic f.undation. Based on classical thin plate theory, the governing dif.erential equations are derived using Hamilton's principle. A neutral surf.ce is used to eliminate stretching-bending coupling in f.M plates on the basis of.the assumption of.constant Poisson's ratio. The resulting governing equation of.f.M thin plates has the same f.rm as homogeneous thin plates. The separation-of.variables method is adopted to obtain solutions f.r the f.ee vibration problems of.rectangular f.M thin plates with separable boundary conditions, including, f.r example, clamped plates. The obtained normal modes and f.equencies are in elegant closed f.rms, and present f.rmulations and solutions are validated by comparing present results with those in the literature and f.nite element method results obtained by the authors. A parameter study reveals the ef.ects of.the power law index n and aspect ratio a/b on f.equencies.
