Baird’s tapir(Tapirus bairdii)is currently endangered throughout its neotropical range with an expected popula--lished in Valle del Silencio within Parque Internacional La Amistad(PILA).Seventy-seven tapir pictures of 15 individuals comprising 25 capture-recapture events were analyzed using mark-recapture *** 100%minimum convex polygon of the sampled area was 5.7 km2 and the effective sampled area using half mean max-imum distances moved by tapirs was 7.16 *** estimated a tapir density of 2.93 individuals/km2 which rep-resents the highest density reported for this *** valleys can represent unique and important habitats for large mammal ***,the extent of isolation of this population,potentially constrained by steep slopes of the cordillera,remains *** genetic and movement studies are required to un-derstand meta-population dynamics and connectivity between lowland and highland areas for Baird’s tapir con-servation in Costa Rica.

Study of Spider Silk Fibers by Raman Microscopy

Spider silk fibers of species of the genera Araneus, Gasteracantha, and Linothele sericata were studied. The fibers are composed of axial threads and lateral villi, allowing adhesion to surfaces. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the surface and internal composition of the threads forming the structure. In the three species, the characteristic amino acid peaks of the spider web were found between 2871 and 2975 cm-1, which belong to L-glycine, L-alanine, L-glutamine, and L-proline. The threads are composed of a protective layer mainly composed of amides, alanine, and glycine. The fibrils surrounding the axial fibers consist mainly of amide II (1533 cm-1), which allows adhesion between the thread and the surfaces onto which the spider weaves the web. For the genus Linothele sericata, there is a peak on the surface of this spider web located at 2145 cm-1, which is associated with isonitriles with R-N-C bonds.

Education in trauma： An educational alternative that promotes injury prevention

Purpose： As trauma is a public health problem, different programs have been designed to prevent in- juries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational model that measures the adolescents＇ attitudes towards the rules of road safety, alcohol and road accidents in Colombia. Methods： A pedagogical model evaluating the effect of road safety education and adolescents＇ attitudes towards and experiences of alcohol and road accidents in Colombia was created. After the education concluded, this educational process is analyzed by its impact on adolescents＇ behavior. The educational program included 160 adolescents with the mean age being 1z5 years. Results： The test results indicated that before the educational program 80g of adolescents did not use a safety element when driving, while after the educational program the percentage of no helmet use among adolescents decreased from 72.5% to 24.3% （p = 0.0001 ） and driving a vehicle under the state of drunkenness from 49.3% to 8.1% （p = 0.0001）. Conclusion： An educational model aimed at preventing injuries caused by traffic accidents is shown to be effective in generating changes in adolescents＇ customs of and attitudes towards alcohol and road safety standards in Colombia.

Geriatric epidemiology of trauma in a hospital in Southern Colombia

Objective: To describe the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of geriatric patients who were treated at a university hospital in southern Colombia. Methods: A database of trauma patients over 65 admitted between June 2014 and December 2015 was constructed. Univariate analysis was performed. Measures of central tendency and dispersion for continuous variables were calculated. Results: A total of 760 patients were analyzed, the median age was 74 years (65–98). The median injury severity score was 9 (4–25) the 71.97% were men, and overall mortality was 25.39%. The 92.10% was blunt trauma, and the main mechanism of injury was falls. Conclusions: Trauma in the elderly is a common condition with high risk of mortality. It is important to know the frequency of these injuries to provide the best possible handling. In our hospital we found that geriatric trauma is a common disease, the main cause is falls without embargos traffic accidents are common in this population.
